Leaving town, we cross the **River Ouse** and its broad valley before climbing into the heart of the **South Downs National Park**, Britain’s newest National Park. For much of the day we hike high up on the **chalk ridges and rolling hills** of the Downs, rewarded with panoramic views that stretch inland and out to the English Channel. We pass through **glacial dry valleys** and across open downs, with long stretches where the sea draws ever nearer. Approaching the coast, our path reveals **distant vistas of the legendary Seven Sisters cliffs**, gleaming white in the sunlight. The hike concludes in **Seaford**, a small coastal town steeped in history. Here we find the **Martello Tower**, built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 towers to guard against French invasion during the Napoleonic Wars. It is only suitable for experienced and very fit hikers. From here, the **147m-long White Lion** chalk carving at Whipsnade can be seen across the valley, etched into the hillside and visible for miles. The trail then continues through the **Ashridge Estate**, former seat of the Dukes of Bridgewater, where we pass the 33m **Bridgewater Monument** built in 1832. Finally, we descend into the unspoilt village of **Aldbury**, famed for its traditional cottages and “chocolate-box” charm, before rounding off the day with a visit to the village pub. 🧭 **Guide:** • Leader: [GRAHAM](https://www.outdooraholics.co.uk/MeetTheOutdooraholics.pdf) • Contact (hike day only): 07796 098487 🍽️ **Food:** • Bring a packed lunch • Pub visit after the hike (drinks optional) 🎒**What to Bring** • Hiking boots/shoes • Water (2 litres minimum) • Packed lunch • Waterproofs (jacket and trousers) • Hat and gloves if cold • Train tickets are arranged – just meet us at the meeting point ⚠️ **Safety** Your guide is a trained hike leader and Outdoor Activity First Aider ❓ **Want to Know More?** • [New to Our Trips?](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/new_to_our_day_hikes.pdf) (perfect for first-timers, answers “what to expect”) • [About Us](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/about_us.pdf) (who Outdooraholics are, credibility, history) • [FAQs](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/FAQ.pdf) (covers common queries) 📲 **Stay Connected** [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/outdooraholics/) 📸 [Day hikes list](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/hikesbygrade.pdf) 👣 [Calendar - All trips](https://www.meetup.com/outdooraholics/events/calendar/) 📖 [Facebook page](https://www.facebook.com/Outdooraholics) & [Photos group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/Outdooraholics) 📄 **Terms and Conditions** By signing up or attending you agree to our [Terms and Conditions](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/TermsConditionsOutdooraholicsHikingUK.pdf) © Outdooraholics Hiking UK Ltd 2026 E & OE

Heather's Lesnes Abbey & Crossness Pumping Station walk, moderate, linear
This is a 6.5 mile walk along the Green Chain walk and the Thames. We will visit Lesnes Abbey (cafe, toilets, ruins) and end at Crossness Pumping Station (cafe, toilets, building visit). The final additional 2 miles back to Abbey Wood station can be walked or take the Routemaster bus from Crossness. If you don’t want to visit Crossness, you will have to make your own way (unguided) back to Abbey Wood station. It is highly recommend pre-booking tickets or buying membership in advance. You can make you own way home independently at any time. Please note that **there is a £2 payment required for non-Ramblers members** to help cover our Meetup costs. **Please help the walk leader by bringing the exact change.** Members of the Ramblers Association are welcome on any of our walks, but we would still encourage you to RSVP on Meetup. This will give our volunteer walk leaders an idea of how many are attending, and also to keep the numbers manageable. If, on the day of the walk, you are still on the waiting list and a Ramblers member, you can attend just let the walk leader know you are coming by adding a comment 'Coming as a Rambler'. You will find the start location via our website Our Walks ([westkentwalkinggroup.org.uk](http://westkentwalkinggroup.org.uk/)).

Hike Blacklick Woods and The Canopy. Optional lunch after.
Hike Blacklick Woods and The Canopy. Optional lunch after.
Over time I'm hoping to organize a hike to all the Franklin County Metro Parks. This is the first one so if you're interested jump in! We'll start with the Canopy Walk, a cool feature of this park. Climb 100 stairs to the top - or take the elevator if stairs aren't your thing. At the top there are a bunch of things to play on - a rope bridge, a fireman pole that we can slide down - and more! About fifteen minutes there and we'll head to the natural trail, Buttonbush, Maple and Beech Trail for 2.2 miles then do a 1.7 mile loop on the paved Greenway Trail. We'll be passing our cars as we transition if you only want to do the first loop, or the second loop. Pace of around 3.5 mph but no one left behind. If there is an interest we can grab lunch nearby afterward.
