PRJC Presents: Trad Jazz Mardi Gras Bash featuring Orleans Express
Grab your parasol and beads and join us for a Mardi Gras Trad Jazz celebration! There's plenty of room to dance - and plenty of King Cake!
The PRJC will again celebrate the Mardi Gras season featuring the Orleans Express of Maryland. You don't have to fly or drive down to New Orleans to experience an afternoon of entertainment, we'll have it right here for you in person in Silver Spring.
We invite you to listen, dance to the rhythms, and march to a variety of music fitting for the Mardi Gras season right here in Silver Spring. In addition to New Orleans style jazz, the band's repetoire includes several Tin Alley tunes such as *Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me* and *I'll See You in C.U.B.A.* Wear your favorite Mardi Gras accessories such as masks, hats, boas and beads – and don’t forget those parasols as we join in their joyous Second Line Parade.
The Potomac River Jazz Club (PRJC) has been bringing live New Orleans/Trad style jazz to the DC area for over 52 years. We host our concerts at Rosensteel Hall as it has ample parking, is a few blocks from the metro (red line, Forest Glen), has plenty of seating and dance floor space, and a nicely priced cash bar. Come on out and hear some great live music while supporting local musicians!

People’s Pan-African Wellness Front – Community Control of Healthcare Services
D.C.’s healthcare system, like the rest of the U.S., is profit-driven and structurally racist. Black residents—especially those east of the Anacostia River—suffer from higher rates of chronic illness and maternal mortality and life expectancy gaps of over 15 years compared to white residents. On Sunday February 22nd Pan-African Community Action (PACA) will launch a revolutionary survival program to provide practical services while building political power. The **[People’s Pan-African Wellness Front (PPWF)](https://pacapower.org/our-work/programs/ppwf/)** is a community-based grassroots program led by PACA to confront the health disparities impacting African/Black working-class communities in Southeast Washington, D.C. Inspired by revolutionary legacies like the Black Panther Party’s People’s Free Medical Clinics and the Cuban healthcare model, this program seeks to deliver immediate relief while organizing toward long-term self-determination and community control of health.
**The PPWF will provide:**
* Free high blood pressure screenings
* Free glucose tests (diabetes screening)
* Free hygiene products and medical supplies,
* Free health information and guidance for preventative care
As well as political education on community control of health and radical health programs, including the Black Panther Party’s Free Medical Clinics and the Lincoln Detox Center. Medical professionals will also be available to answer health-related questions. Come out February 22nd either to receive services and/or to learn how to come involved with later phases of the program to scale up services, expand into more neighborhoods, and anchor broader campaigns around community control. This effort is part of PACA’s broader strategy to build forums for participatory democracy and build a mass movement for power.
*This is more than a health program—it’s a step toward Black self-determination. We welcome healthcare workers, students, community members, and all who are ready to organize, learn, and build power*.
Local Social Host Sign-Up: Lunches, Drinks & Curated Experiences
**Want to help bring your city’s community together?**
We’re looking for local hosts to organize small group lunches, evening drinks, mixers, movie get-togethers and curated experiences.
**No experience necessary,** just a friendly attitude, some local knowledge, and a willingness to meet a few new people. After each event, we’ll send a short feedback form so we can improve and support you. The host will also be able to provide feedback so we can learn what worked and what didn't.
**[Click here](https://form.questionscout.com/6926c9ab87a828a5c11a79fc)** to apply and get started: if you’re selected, we’ll reach out for a quick screening call.
· Frequencies · by Darren Paul Fisher @ Beatley Library
In a parallel world where everyone has an innate “frequency,” those with high frequencies are gifted, popular, and – most importantly – lucky. People in lower ranges have correspondingly less of these traits but more emotional depth. When someone with extremely high frequency is in close proximity to someone especially low, chaos ensues. A boy and girl at opposite extremes of the scale meet in elementary school and encounter each other repeatedly over many years. While the story seems at first to be a *Romeo and Juliet* variation in search of a happy ending, their universe has some secrets that will make the action weirder and more entertaining than anyone could expect.

Meetup #41: The Doctor and the Deep Blue Sea
**NOTE: Meetup is SUNDAY this month!**
Apparently, there has been a war between the land and the sea, but it's too intense for us Americans to handle I guess? While we wait for Disney to do whatever it's gonna do, let's take our own journey under, over, and around the sea with the Doctor and his hardy companions. Choose from one of these water-logged adventures...
*The Underwater Menace* \- The Second Doctor\, Ben\, Polly\, and Jamie arrive on the seacoast and immediately get kidnapped by Atlanteans \(like you do\)\. Taken to the lost city of Atlantis\, they become embroiled in the schemes of the mad Professor Zaroff\, who can \- we are reliably informed \- be stopped by nuzzink in ze vorld\! \[This story has 2 live action episodes and 2 animated episodes\.\]
*Warriors of the Deep -* The 5th Doctor, Tegan, and Turlough arrive in the distant future to find Earth split into warring factions poised to annihilate each other with atomic weapons. Like that could ever happen. As if tensions could not get any worse, the Silurians and Sea Devils have once again awoken from their long hibernation - and they are super cranky about it.
*Under the Lake/After the Flood -* The 12th Doctor and Clara also arrive at an underwater base, but fortunately there are no Silurians or Sea Devils - just ghosts trying to murder them. Phew.
*Curse of the Black Spot/Legend of the Sea Devils* \- The 11th Doctor\, Amy\, and Rory arrive on a pirate ship where even the slightest sign of illness or injury leads to apparent death\.\.\. or does it? Then\, the 13th Doctor\, Yaz\, and Dan swashbuckle their way through an adventure with the legendary Madame Ching and a fashionably dressed Sea Devil\.
When you RSVP, please rank the four options above in the comments in the order of preference (1 being "Yes! I am dying to see it!" and 4 being "Meh."), and we will abide by the choice of the attendees.
For the Meetup itself, we ask everyone to bring something to drink and something to eat (snacks/munchies - you don't need to bring a whole ham or something!) to share with the group. We'll have food and drink as well and maybe a themed cocktail if the inspiration strikes...
We are a couple blocks from the Columbia Heights Metro (15th and Harvard NW). We'll provide the full address ahead of the event. Note also that we are a walk-up - two flights of stairs.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!
Lorca's LA CASA DE BERNARDA ALBA (The House of Bernarda Alba)
Experience GALA's contemporary staging of the modern classic ***La casa de Bernarda Alba (The House of Bernarda Alba)*** by Spanish playwright Federico García Lorca. Directed by José Zayas and with original music by Koki Lortkipanidze, the play explores themes of female oppression, sexual repression, and the conflict between tradition and modernity, all universal topics that resonate with audiences today.
García Lorca’s ***The House of Bernarda Alba*** brims with tension, desire, and rebellion as five sisters are forced into strict mourning for their father under the iron rule of their mother, Bernarda. In this electrifying new production, passions simmer behind closed doors, secrets spark dangerous rivalries, and the pressure of a house built on control threatens to explode. This contemporary staging infuses Lorca’s classic with a sensuous, modern pulse and a dark Gothic mystery, illuminating why Bernarda Alba remains as urgent and thrilling today as ever.
CAST: Luz Nicolás as Bernarda, Evelyn Rosario Vega as Poncia, María Coral as Adela, María del Mar Rodríguez as Angustias, Giselle González as Martirio, Anna Malavé as Magdalena, Alicia Kaplan an as María Josefa, and Ixchel as Amelia.
PERFORMANCES: February 5 through March 1, 2026. The production is presented in Spanish with English surtitles, Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2 pm.
Community Night is Thursday, Feberuary 5 at 8 pm.
Press Night and Noche de GALA, which includes a post-performance reception with the creative team and cast, is Saturday, February 7 at 8 pm.
TICKETS: $50 Premium Center, $45 Orchestra Standard, $35 Orchestra Value, and $25 Balcony Value; $35 Seniors (65+), Military, Teachers, and Groups (10+); $25 25 and Under; Community Night $20; and Noche de GALA: Chosen ticket price + $5 (per person). **[GET TICKETS](https://ci.ovationtix.com/35923/production/1245608)**
This production is made possible with the generous support from the Embassy of Spain in Washington, DC, Spain Arts & Culture, and of our Honorary Producers Circle for The House of Bernarda Alba that includes Janet Farrell, Patricia Sosa, and Wanda Báez.
