Repetition
Repetition
Repetition is everywhere in the city — in motion, in habit, in design. It's the same shape, gesture, or element echoed again and again. Sometimes it’s choreographed — uniforms, queues, synchronized movement. Sometimes it’s accidental — a row of crates, a sea of matching umbrellas, three people checking their phones in the same posture. Repetition brings structure to an image, but it also brings energy. And often, it's the **one thing that breaks the repetition** that makes the shot work — the one person out of line, the one object that doesn’t belong. Patterns are an inevitable part of repetition. Repetition creates patterns, so at some juncture, you might find yourself thinking in terms of pattern—and thats okay, but this isn’t really about finding patterns — it’s about repetition on the street. **Try to think more people and objects rather than architectural facades.** ### **What to look for:** * People walking in sync, standing in formation, or mirroring gestures * Matching outfits — uniforms, coordinated couples, or strangers dressed alike * Rows of identical objects — bins, crates, chairs, signs, wheels, bikes * Repeated signage — fonts, symbols, stickers * Traffic or pedestrian flow — feet, wheels, umbrellas * Accidental rhythm — three people on their phones, same haircut, same shoes ### **Tips:** * **Zoom in** on the rhythm — isolate the repetition inside the frame * **Wait** for the right moment — repetition in people often lasts just a beat * **Look for the break** — the one thing that stands out in the pattern * **Work with time** — repetition is often about timing, not just space ### **Bonus Challenge:** Photograph a **sequence of three or more** repeated elements in motion — footsteps, gestures, or actions — and see if you can catch the rhythm in a single frame. *** ### **Meet 2:30:** **Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Exit C2**, street level, 2:30PM sharp. From there, explore the surrounding streets — all rich in crowds, symmetry, and urban rhythm. There’s the Prominade to the south, Nathan Road action, smaller streets in between, Kowloon Park, and Canton Road. ### **Regroup between 4:15-4:30:** **Delaney’s Irish Pub**, basement of Mary Building, 71–77 Peking Road, TST. Get here between 4:15-4:30PM. Please stay a while to share your experience, thoughts, and maybe some images while grabbing a drink (or more). **After all this:** Please post 5 of your best images from the shoot that fit today’s project. And PLEASE, be a participant in commenting on other images. Content reactions (oh what a cute dog) and general comments (apples look tasty) are always welcome, but respectful and constructive critiques on composition or technique are even better. It's part of the process and valuable for your fellow photographers.

It is best to come prepared with food and water. **Meeting Point:** The Victoria Peak - Gino's Gelato **Time:** 10:00 am (SHARP!) **IMPORTANT:** Out of respect to the members that arrive on time, we will only be able to wait a maximum of 5 minutes. BYOBook: non-fiction books presentations and discussion
BYOBook: non-fiction books presentations and discussion
This is a regular Bring-Your-Own-Book session, where participants share and present to the group non-fiction books they have read. New members may sit in to hear and discuss others' presentations. Usually a meeting takes around 2.5-3 hours. During this time we discuss 2 different books, roughly 1 hour per book. Any non-fiction material: a book, documentary, or lecture or a part of it - anything with a title and an author and that contains some coherent ideas. Each presentation includes a summary (15-40 min) and discussion (accordingly). The meeting will be either in a park or in a coffee shop, on HK side. The exact place to be confirmed with the attendees **by WhatsApp only**. I will / have sent the link to the WhatsApp group, please use the link. Introvert friendly. We have people from different countries, so while books can be in any language, the language of the meeting is English. There is a fee of 20 HKD for the first timers to help funding the Meetup membership needed to run the group. Do not hit "Attend" if you are not going to attend. If you RSVPed, but there is anything preventing you from going to the meeting, remember to tell the host and/or update the RSVP as soon as possible. But if you plan to attend, do hit "Attend", please :))) No-shows are all silently noted with much disapproval and will be removed from the group.

## Learn Infrastructure-as-Code (the FUN Way) — Through Minecraft 🎮☁️ **Joint Meetup: Azure CBUS × Columbus HashiCorp User Group × DevOps Columbus** What if learning Terraform and Infrastructure-as-Code didn’t feel like a whitepaper… but more like a game? Join us for a joint Azure CBUS, Columbus HashiCorp User Group, and DevOps Columbus meetup where **Mark Tinderholt** \(Principal Architect\, Microsoft Azure \| HashiCorp Ambassador \| “The Azure Terraformer”\) shows how **Minecraft** can be used as a surprisingly powerful way to understand real-world Infrastructure-as-Code concepts. In this session, Mark will demonstrate how Terraform and Azure can be used to provision, configure, and manage Minecraft servers—while teaching the same patterns you’d use for production cloud infrastructure. ### What we’ll cover * Infrastructure-as-Code fundamentals using **Terraform** * Provisioning real infrastructure on **Azure** * Applying **IaC best practices** (immutability, repeatability, versioning) * How playful environments like Minecraft make complex concepts *click* * Why learning through experimentation beats click-ops every time ### Who should attend * Developers, platform engineers, and cloud engineers * Terraform users (new or experienced) * Anyone curious about Infrastructure-as-Code but tired of boring examples * Minecraft fans who want to see it used in a totally unexpected way No prior Minecraft experience required—just curiosity and a willingness to learn infrastructure the fun way. Drunken Philosophy: Is Life a Dream? Is Life a Simulation?
Drunken Philosophy: Is Life a Dream? Is Life a Simulation?
Welcome to Drunken Philosophy, a casual, curious, social discussion club. Optional topic for this meet up: Is life a dream? Is life a simulation? Dreams feel real while they last. Could life work the same way? How do we know we’re awake, and what follows if we can’t be sure? Let’s kick that around over a around of drinks: • What makes something feel real: continuity, shared evidence, or meaning? • How do we know we're not in a simulation? • How would you tell you’re awake (reality checks, memory, other people)? • If life is dreamlike, what becomes of free will and responsibility? • Is identity a story we keep telling—who’s the narrator? • Are we author, actor, or audience in our dreams and how would you tell? • Does art/film reveal reality or replace it? No lectures. Friendly crowd. Drop in for one drink and stay if it’s fun.

January Book Club - Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
January Book Club - Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy
For January, we’re reading Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. For fans of Flight Behavior and Station Eleven, a novel set on the brink of catastrophe, as a young woman chases the world's last birds--and her own final chance for redemption. Franny Stone has always been a wanderer. By following the ocean's tides and the birds that soar above, she can forget the losses that have haunted her life. But when the wild she loves begins to disappear, Franny can no longer wander without a destination. She arrives in remote Greenland with one purpose: to find the world's last flock of Arctic terns and track their final migration. She convinces Ennis Malone, captain of the Saghani, to take her onboard, winning over his eccentric crew with promises that the birds will lead them to fish. As the Saghani fights its way south, Franny's dark history begins to unspool. Battered by night terrors, accumulating a pile of unsent letters, and obsessed with pursuing the terns at any cost, Franny is full of secrets. When her quest threatens the safety of the entire crew, Franny must ask herself what she is really running toward--and running from. Propelled by a narrator as fierce and fragile as the terns she is following, Charlotte McConaghy's Migrations is both an ode to our threatened world and a breathtaking page-turner about the lengths we will go for the people we love.
