Royal Institution "Discourse: Mathematical tools to transform the world"
This is a **theatre** and **livestream** talk from the **Royal Institution of Great Britain.** Join Mathematician and Healthcare Engineer Becky Shipley as she explains how mathematical modelling is driving innovation in the NHS and beyond..
**ADVANCE BOOKING AND PAYMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS TALK.**
**More details and booking instructions on the RI web site:**
**[https://www.rigb.org/whats-on/discourse-mathematical-tools-transform-world](https://www.rigb.org/whats-on/discourse-mathematical-tools-transform-world)**
**SUMMARY**
Mathematics is a powerful tool to understand the world around us. It can model the physics, chemistry and biology of a wide variety of systems. But it can also be used to make predictions that can feed into technology, manufacturing and engineering across an array of fields.
In our first Discourse of 2026, mathematician and expert in computational modelling **Becky Shipley** explores how mathematics is inspiring new advances across engineering industries. Drawing on her experience in healthcare, she'll visit case studies showing how mathematical problem-solving is improving diagnosis, treatment and patient experience, alongside the newest applications of mathematics.
Discover how multidisciplinary engineering principles led to the rapid development of novel medical devices during the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to an internationally recognised team led by Becky herself.
This is a theatre and livestream event for an adult audience, where the speakers and audience in our Theatre are joined by our audience online.
**The livestream will go live around 7.10pm, and the talk will begin at 7.30pm. If you register but miss the livestream, the video will be available to you via the same link for two weeks after the event date.**
For more information on livestreams, see the information below, or [visit our FAQs page](https://www.rigb.org/whats/faqs-ri-livestreams). Please use the event link you have been provided with.
By booking to attend events at the Royal Institution, you confirm that you have read and accept the Ri's [event terms and conditions](https://www.rigb.org/terms-and-conditions). You also agree to abide by [our code of conduct](https://www.rigb.org/about-us/how-were-run/our-code-conduct-ri-visitors), and help to create a great experience for yourself and your fellow participants.

Silent Disco: Friday Night Party | London 20s and 30s
**By popular demand, on Friday 30th January - we’re really excited to be hosting our latest Silent Disco Party, exclusively for 20s and 30s.**
Yep that’s right - over the last few months, we've had a number of requests for another of these parties and so it's back!
To start the night in style, we've booked out an area at a nearby pub in Fenchurch Street to give you chance to grab a drink and get to know some of our community a little better.
When you've had chance to loosen up for the night ahead, we'll then be heading to our very own **Silent Disco Party**, exclusively for our community.
If you’ve never been to a silent disco, think of it as an amazing club night… with the same energy, dancing, and fantastic music, but with a twist.
Instead of the music being controlled by a single DJ, everyone will receive their own personal set of wireless headphones and you'll have 3 channels to choose from, giving you complete control over the music and the volume!
But these aren't generic music channels, as they'll be controlled by our resident DJ team - who'll be up against one another in an epic **"Battle of the DJs".**
Each have prepared a playlist of some of the very best tunes, from club anthems, pop classics and epic party mixes, all designed to win your attention and get you dancing.
And best of all, whilst silent discos that take place in the capital can cost over £30, we've managed to secure an amazing deal, so that you can enjoy this whole night of **amazing music and great company for just £4.85!**
It’s sure to be an unforgettable night, so dust off your dancing shoes and join us for this!

H is for… Handel Hendrix House 🎸🎻
Join us on **Saturday 31st January** at **[Handel Hendrix House](https://handelhendrix.org)**, near Bond Street, to step inside the London homes of two musical legends.

**Jimi Hendrix**, who moved into the adjoining flat at 23 Brook Street in 1968.

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process.
Fast track
• Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell).
• Show up and try it out.
• Complete application, etc. later.
Normal process
• Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/).
• Attend orientation in advance.
• At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility.
• Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM.
• Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895).
The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
Humanist Community Celebrating Darwin Day
Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program:
Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there!
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Compensation Data
**People Analytics 101: Making Sense of Compensation Data**
Compensation data is one of the most widely used and widely misunderstood forms of people analytics.
The session will cover where compensation data comes from, including market pricing data, internal payroll data, and benchmarking sources, and how companies think about structuring and analyzing that information. We will explore how compensation data is leveraged to set salary ranges, manage internal equity, support hiring and retention, and align pay with business strategy. A portion of the session will address common data challenges and limitations, such as market noise, inconsistent job matching, and incomplete datasets, while keeping the primary focus on practical use rather than technical depth.
The session will also look ahead at where the space is going, including the growing impact of pay transparency laws, expanding pay equity requirements, and emerging regulations in the US and Europe that require organizations to report on gender and pay gaps. The goal is to give attendees a clear mental model for how compensation analytics works today and why getting it right is becoming increasingly critical.
(note: we are back at Rev1 this month!)

Saturday Mornings @ East Market
Let's grab some coffee/food and share a morning chat! The East Market has an ample parking lot and outdoor and indoor seating.
Grab a cup of coffee from Winston's Coffee & Waffles or on your way to East Market and meet us on the second floor - table behind or east of the elevator. If the weather cooperates we will be meeting in the patio.
Per what this group is about: "Everyone is welcome! International transplants to Columbus who want to improve language skills, Columbus residents who want to discuss international travel and culture, and anyone who enjoys getting together for good conversations."
