Chess is often described as a universal language. Yet, for many women and girls, access to that language has historically been limited due to a range of factors, including societal expectations around the role of women, the value placed on their time and hobbies compared to family and work responsibilities, and broader barriers linked to education, employment, and social opportunity. The **London Women Chess Club (LWCC)** was founded to change that. We are a non-profit organisation, awarded by the English Chess Federation (ECF), a community-led chess club dedicated to **empowering all women and girls through chess**, not only by teaching the game, but by creating a safe, supportive environment where confidence, learning, and ambition can grow side by side. **Why the London Women Chess Club exists** Despite chess being open to all, women still make up a small minority of players in clubs, tournaments, and leadership roles. Many women tell us they feel intimidated joining mixed clubs, unsure of their level, or hesitant to play competitively, even when they have talent and passion. LWCC was created to address this gap. Our mission is simple: to **increase participation, confidence, and representation of women in chess**, from beginners to competitive players. **What we do** London Women Chess Club runs regular chess sessions, social play, training, and tournaments across London. Our activities are designed to be welcoming, structured, and encouraging, whether someone is touching the board for the first time or preparing for league and rated play. We focus on: Learning without pressure Progress at your own pace Building confidence through experience Creating a sense of belonging Supporting women to step into competitive chess We also collaborate with libraries, community centres, and chess organisations to ensure chess remains **accessible, inclusive, and rooted in the community**. **More than just a chess club** LWCC is not only about moves and results. It is about: · Personal growth · Mental resilience · Leadership and volunteering · Mentorship and peer support · Representation in sports and mind games Many of our members arrive unsure of themselves, and leave feeling empowered to play matches, enter tournaments, volunteer, arbitrate, organise, and lead. **GAMES NIGHT** \- A curated selection of board games with a twist and a Traitors styles special event planned for the evening Interested in meeting like-minded people, enjoying conversations and **FINDING THE TRAITOR** (in a board game!) Then come along for a curated evening of hidden identity and social deduction games, and get ready to accuse your friends in a night of detective work and betrayal. If your appetite for social deduction is not sated by these incredible games then come along for the nights main event: **Blood on the Clocktower** (think TVs Traitors but done in one session!). Imagine a streamlined, improved version, that keeps everyone playing from start to finish. Hidden among the players is one murderer who each night kills one of the townsfolk. Come morning they must debate and decide on who they believe the murderer is. Do you have what it takes navigate the web of deceit and imperfect information and root out the murderer? During a 'day' phase players socialize openly and whisper privately to trade knowledge or spread lies, culminating in a player's execution if a majority suspects them of being Evil. At 'night' time, players close their eyes and some are woken one at a time by the Storyteller to gather information, spread mischief, or kill. **Join LCC Sunday, March 8th at the Hackney Marshes playing field as we make another attempt at playing the Soviet Union's very own *Zarnitsa,* a capture-the-flag alternative with a small twist.** **WHAT IS ZARNITSA?** Zarnitsa (Зарница), or heat-lightning, officially known as the All-Union Young Pioneer military sports game "Zarnitsa", is a massive multi-player physical sports game developed and practiced by the Young Pioneers communist youth organisation during the Soviet era. The game provides a simulation of military actions such as reconnaissance, co-ordinated offensives, giving chase, etc. Popular once again in modern Russia, this is a simple game designed for children and young people in military/cadet organisations, but great fun for active people of all ages. The rules of Zarnitsa are based on the classic capture the flag concept. Two teams each have a "base area" with a flag contained within, concealed or otherwise. Each team's goal is to protect their own flag and seize the other team's and bring it back to the base area. Players can walk, run, sneak, hide, create diversions and use any means short of physical violence to achieve their objectives. What makes Zarnitsa different from classic CTF is simply this: every player has two velcro-attached shoulder straps that serve as health indicators and can be torn off by the opponents. Losing one indicates "wounded", losing two indicates "dead". The "wounded" players cannot run and should only walk. The "dead" players return to a respawn point or leave the game in some modes. Why are we doing this? Capture the flag is simply top fun and anyone who says otherwise is joking themselves. Zarnitsa's slightly elevated level of complexity should give us just that extra challenge needed to really make it interesting. That said, this is our first go with organising multiplayer sports games, so we'll see what the results are! As always comments, questions, suggestions and concerns are more than welcome - just contact an organiser. Sports games are a great way to get and stay active, meet new people, and break the monotony of everyday life under British capitalism. Let's get out there! For our first attempt at organising a little Zarnitsa league here in London, we'll hit up Hackney Marshes and Wick Woodland. We'll divide into two teams; each will receive coloured vests or other garments to which the health indicator strips are attached. Then we'll take up our places, count down from 60 seconds, and let the games begin! **Note: we'll want at least five people per team for this to really work right, so we'll cancel or reschedule if this one gets less than 9 RSVPs.** There's no limit to how big our group can be of course, so please do join us! Younkin Branch Library (Ashville) meeting space is now reserved for any and all interested in or enthused by playing a game of chess. The second Thursday of each month, 6:00pm to 7:50pm. First gathering is Thursday, May 11th. No fees. Chess sets provided; however, you may bring your own if you wish.

Inspired by our successful events like "Saturday Mornings @ East Market" and other "Pot Luck in the Park" lunches, this gathering promises to be a blend of fun conversations, language exchange, and cultural insights, all while sharing wonderful foods with each other. Please bring a dish to share and anything you would like to drink. We will provide plates, plastic silverware and napkins. So, come hungry and ready to chat!

This is an in-person meeting. At this meeting you will get answers to depression and anxiety. Find out the source of them and how to get rid of them. Did you know that unwanted emotions like anxiety, depression, unhappiness, loneliness, hopelessness, anger, fear, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not due to a chemical imbalance in your brain from some nebulous chemical reaction "by chance". Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you. The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life. Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life. The Forge does have a full bar and kitchen. There is no cover charge but they do request all attendees to purchase a minimum of ~$20 per person. Soft drink refills are $1 each. Please support our hosts so we can continue to provide great events for the group! The Forge has a large library of games available for us to enjoy. Hosts and regulars will also provide numerous popular games but please bring any games you would like to teach and/or play. Doors open at 6, and we expect gaming to be rolling by around 630. Please promptly end your games and clear out the space at 10pm when the bar closes. We encourage socializing but do not permit disruptive behavior of any kind. There is a parking lot behind the neighboring Mexican restaurant that is free and easy to walk from but it's a bit hidden.
