Chiltern Way Section 8 - Ewelme to Stokenchurch
Chiltern Way Section 8 - Ewelme to Stokenchurch
**Start time**: 10:00 **Estimated finish**: 17:00 **Difficulty**: Moderate/Strenuous **Ascent**: 650m / 2133ft **Distance**: 12.5m / 20.1km **Led by** Beth (07956242703) Are you ready to explore the breathtaking beauty of the Chilterns? Join us as we walk the Chiltern Way in stages, discovering picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and hidden gems along the way. This long-distance trail, covering approximately 177 miles, offers a perfect mix of rolling hills, wooded paths, and open fields. From historical landmarks to cosy pubs, each stage of the Chiltern Way promises new discoveries and delightful experiences. *** **Important:** **as public transport is tricky we will instead meet at the end point in Stokenchurch (car park by the old Kings Arm Hotel, see map pin!) and then organise ourselves into as few cars as possible and drive to the start point at Ewelme Recreation Ground for 10.30. At the end, we'll drive the drivers back to their cars. You can meet us in Ewelme but we cannot guarantee enough spots in cars to get back, though we will of course do our best.** *** A rewarding point-to-point walk through the heart of the Chilterns, linking the historic village of Ewelme with the green at Stokenchurch. At 12.5 miles with around 650 metres of ascent, this is a properly hilly day, with lots of ups and downs rather than long sustained climbs. The route winds through classic Chiltern woodland and open fields, offering plenty of variety and some lovely views. Underfoot conditions can be muddy, particularly if there has been lots of rain just before, so come prepared to get muddy! Boots are preferred if possible and please make sure you bring lots of warm layers and a waterproof. We’ll stop for lunch along the route, so please bring a packed lunch and water for the day. There are no toilets en-route. The walk finishes mid to late afternoon on the green at Stokenchurch, and if there's time on the day we'll stop at the pub in Ibstone Common. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead under close control and are the responsibility of the owner. **Did you know we're on Instagram?** Follow us at ***@ChilternYoungWalkers*** to see pictures from our walks! **Become a full member**: CYW are part of the Ramblers and you may try up to three walks free. This is a ticketed event and purchases can be made [here via eventbrite. ](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/workshop-the-mysteries-of-consciousness-and-the-search-for-depth-tickets-1983730926602?aff=oddtdtcreator&_gl=1%2A3hpw60%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_ga%2AMjQ5MDU0MjgzLjE3NzE3OTgwNDc.%2A_ga_TQVES5V6SH%2AczE3NzE3OTgwNDYkbzEkZzAkdDE3NzE3OTgwNDYkajYwJGwwJGgw) *Where our capacity to measure is limited, philosophy can help us to approach mystery and the unknown.* ‘What is consciousness?’ is perhaps the greatest anomaly of science but moving closer to understanding this and searching for greater depth in life has always been the goal of the philosophers. Where our capacity to quantify and measure is limited, philosophy can help us to approach mystery and harmonise our relationship with the unknown, acting as a bridge between different aspects of ourselves and of our reality. This workshop will consist of three parts with some practical exercises. **Part 1: Consciousness** **and Science** \- an overview of ‘consciousness anomalies’ considering ways to dialogue more openly and about what we don’t understand\. **Part 2: Life on Many Levels** \- from the Celts to the Egyptians\, life was traditionally considered to exist on many levels both visible and invisible\. Using symbol and philosophy we will explore and how we might better relate to different levels of life\. **Part 3: Seeing** **and Experiencing** \- Neoplatonist philosophers presented a simple structure for entering more deeply into reality which we will learn and practice during the session\, with further suggestions for deepening our experience of life and expanding consciousness\.

Visit the Heath Robinson Museum!
Visit the Heath Robinson Museum!
Come along on Sunday 8th March to visit the Heath Robinson Museum! **About the museum** The museum in north west London is dedicated to showcasing the work of the artist, illustrator, humorist and social commentator [William Heath Robinson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Heath_Robinson "William Heath Robinson") (1872–1944). The museum opened in 2016 and is located in Pinner Memorial Park. The collection includes about 1000 pieces of original art work together with an archive of letters, association copies and special editions of the books that he illustrated, proof prints, advertising booklets and ephemera. William Heath Robinson was born in London on 31 May 1872 into a family of artists and grew up in Finsbury Park. Both his grandfather, father and his two brothers worked as illustrators. He was an artist who drew whimsically elaborate machines to achieve simple objectives. The visit should last about 1h 30mins and is self-guiding. **Cost** Entry £7 per person for Full Members and £8 per person for everyone else. Art Fund members are free (payable by cash or credit card on the day). **Become a Full Member** To become a Full Member (£14 a year), either: \- Pay cash at an event \- Pay via Bank Transfer \(\(TSB Bank plc\, Sort code: 77\-66\-65\, Account no: 00030809, Account name: Cultureseekers)) \- Pay via credit card on the day or in advance \([https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QLAX8AUI](https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QLAX8AUI)) \- Pay via PayPal\, send a payment to general@cultureseekers\.org\, using the ‘Friends & Family’ option Benefits of becoming a Full Member [here...](https://www.meetup.com/london_cultureseekers/photos/22974682/531979527/) **Afterwards** After we will head to the museum cafe next door, which is called 'Daisy's in the Park', for a chat over a drink from 3:30pm. Rabble - Fitness Through Games!
Rabble - Fitness Through Games!
A Rabble session is 1 hour of fun and social team games. Each game disguises high-intensity intervals within the rules, giving you an effective, all-body workout without even realising it. We play a bunch of different games at each session (like British Bulldog, Capture the Flag, Dodgeball, Frisbee and many more), and every class is different. Sessions are open to all, no matter your sporting ability. Each game is explained before we start, so there's no need to have played any of the games before. Come solo or bring friends! And stay at the end for the social part! Who knew getting fit could be this fun? **TO BOOK**: It's essential that you book onto sessions via our website, using the link below; due to restrictions on games and preparation times we cannot accept walk-ins, or late arrivals. [https://joinrabble.com/locations/london/](https://joinrabble.com/locations/london/) Use the code **FREEPLAY** to get your first game free! *** We play every: * Monday in Finsbury Park (19:00 - 20:00) * Tuesday in Shoreditch Park (19:00 - 20:00) * Wednesday in Elephant & Castle (19:00 - 20:00) * Saturday in Southwark Park (10:30 - 11:30) * Saturday in Finsbury Park (11:00 - 12:00) * Sunday in Clapham Common (12:00 - 13:00) We hope to see you playing soon! PS. We have a group of dedicated regulars, so numbers are usually much higher than Meetup might suggest. LET'S PLAY: ZARNITSA Sports Megagame [It's like Russian Capture the Flag]
LET'S PLAY: ZARNITSA Sports Megagame [It's like Russian Capture the Flag]
**Join LCC Sunday, March 8th at the Hackney Marshes playing field as we make another attempt at playing the Soviet Union's very own *Zarnitsa,* a capture-the-flag alternative with a small twist.** **WHAT IS ZARNITSA?** Zarnitsa (Зарница), or heat-lightning, officially known as the All-Union Young Pioneer military sports game "Zarnitsa", is a massive multi-player physical sports game developed and practiced by the Young Pioneers communist youth organisation during the Soviet era. The game provides a simulation of military actions such as reconnaissance, co-ordinated offensives, giving chase, etc. Popular once again in modern Russia, this is a simple game designed for children and young people in military/cadet organisations, but great fun for active people of all ages. The rules of Zarnitsa are based on the classic capture the flag concept. Two teams each have a "base area" with a flag contained within, concealed or otherwise. Each team's goal is to protect their own flag and seize the other team's and bring it back to the base area. Players can walk, run, sneak, hide, create diversions and use any means short of physical violence to achieve their objectives. What makes Zarnitsa different from classic CTF is simply this: every player has two velcro-attached shoulder straps that serve as health indicators and can be torn off by the opponents. Losing one indicates "wounded", losing two indicates "dead". The "wounded" players cannot run and should only walk. The "dead" players return to a respawn point or leave the game in some modes. Why are we doing this? Capture the flag is simply top fun and anyone who says otherwise is joking themselves. Zarnitsa's slightly elevated level of complexity should give us just that extra challenge needed to really make it interesting. That said, this is our first go with organising multiplayer sports games, so we'll see what the results are! As always comments, questions, suggestions and concerns are more than welcome - just contact an organiser. Sports games are a great way to get and stay active, meet new people, and break the monotony of everyday life under British capitalism. Let's get out there! For our first attempt at organising a little Zarnitsa league here in London, we'll hit up Hackney Marshes and Wick Woodland. We'll divide into two teams; each will receive coloured vests or other garments to which the health indicator strips are attached. Then we'll take up our places, count down from 60 seconds, and let the games begin! **Note: we'll want at least five people per team for this to really work right, so we'll cancel or reschedule if this one gets less than 9 RSVPs.** There's no limit to how big our group can be of course, so please do join us! Just be sure to either turn up on the day or change your RSVP if you can't make it in the end, just so we know what to expect. Take care and see you on the pitch!
