SCARBOROUGH - Practical Philosophy ๐จ๐ฆ
**๐๏ธ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no โofficialโ philosophy knowledge required! ๐
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community ๐
**๐ HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://tally.so/r/ZjaPO0), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, itโs important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the โofficial' start.
* 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the โjump-offโ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. Itโs not obligatory to answer them.
* 20:45-21:00 - Bring everyone back together to discuss conclusions of the topic - each group gives a short 1-minute summary. Organizer concludes the meeting and everyone takes a group photo.
* 21:00 - The official meeting is over but itโs a great opportunity to get to know people in a non-structured environment, so we often stick around, chat, and get to know each other.
**๐งงPRICING?**
Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend! We just ask that if we are meeting in a cafรฉ, buy a beverage! Some chapters rent a space for us to meet, and they may ask for donations to help contribute to the cost of rent. Donations will always be 100% voluntary though!
๐ **WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
๐ฃ โI feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting whatโs right and wrongโ - Ekam
๐ฃ โI got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.โ - Daniel
**๐ค FAQ**
* โWhat will we talk about? What's the topic?
โThe topic for the week is shared every Sunday in the Whatsapp group. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you donโt see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/ZjaPO0).
* Do I need to study or read anything to attend?
No preparation is necessary. This isnโt a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and weโll discuss it, but it's not required.
* Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* Is it mostly men that attend?
Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we donโt meet in any dark rooms.
* Can I come alone?
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* Can I be late?
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* Where do you meet?
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://tally.so/r/ZjaPO0) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).
๐ค**POLICY**
To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment.

Shutter Space Opening Reception
Shutter Space invites viewers into a visual journey where the stillness of nature and the pulse of the urban world converge. This exhibit brings together a curated selection of landscape and cityscape photography, each frame capturing a distinct encounter between place, light, and perspective. From sweeping natural vistas to the intricate geometry of metropolitan life, the works in Shutter Space explore how environments shape us and how we, in return, shape them.

Who is this meetup for?
**For beginners!** Learn and practice Japanese through games and activities in a fun and friendly environment.
**We welcome those who are brand new to Japanese (only a few words), up until beginner (N4 level)\***. Your English should also be native or near-native as well, since you will also teach English to your new Japanese friends! ๐จ๐ฆ x ๐ฏ๐ต
**If you are N3 level or above, please contact us before participating. We accept high level speakers in certain circumstances.**
**Format (Jan 2026):**
* The first 50 minutes is unstructured chatting and studying with fellow English speakers. Japanese native speakers will join in the second half.
* Feel free to bring Japanese study materials.
* Otherwise, I will have games and activities ready for a smoother and fun time.
* After Japanese friends join we will shuffle the tables around.
* Like a teacher, Iโm also available to answer questions about English or Japanese during the meetup. ๐ฌ
**Participation Fee:**
This weekend session is $10 for English speakers. We take cash or credit/debit card payments during the event. ๐ณ
Everyone who joins will get a stamp card which can earn you discounted or free meetups.
**This Location:**
To find the Eglinton food court, you have to exit the station, cross the street, then go downstairs. Once you arrive at the food court, please look for our group (usually at the far corner).
If you are running late, please comment or let us know directly.
**Rules:**
\- We have a strict policy against anti\-social behaviours: racism\, harassment\, or attending for certain other purposes is not allowed\. Please report any issues to the organizer\.
\- In addition\, no\-shows or last minute cancellations may be subject to removal from the group\. If you can't make it\, please let us know as soon as possible\.
Read this far? Thanks! Hope to see you at our event!
\*N5 and N4 are grades from the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). N5 and N4 are considered beginner, N3 intermediate, and N2 and N1 are advanced.

Valentines Eve (Galentine's anybody?)
**Valentines Eve**: Love and friendship pair quite naturally with almost any wine. Go ahead. Give it a try at the Hilliard Wine Club Valentines Eve event. Pay no attention to the superstitious guy in the corner who keeps murmuring comments about it being Friday the 13th too.
(Volunteers with decorations show up at least 15 minutes early to set the scene for a pleasant relaxing evening. Reminder - this is also another "Freestyle Night.")
**On Freestyle night** \- just bring a bottle to share\. There is NO formal wine tasting like on other weeks\. Door charge is $10 \(cash or Venmo only please\)\. We may have some left over wines to clear out\! Glasses are provided\. Take Care\. See you there\.
**Parking**: There are several public parking lots near the Alive614 hall. Please be careful to NOT park in private parking lots. They do tow. Check Google maps to scope out your space. Anyone who is early could easily find a parking space on the street nearby. I am told that the Chase parking lot is safe after hours.
**Glasses**: โฆwill be provided. Please note that after the wine tasting, the EMPTY glasses need to be returned to the boxes at the service table. Please do not make me hunt down your empty glass. Please be gentle, our glasses are fragile. Uh, they are made of glass!
**Food**: You are welcome to bring a snack to share. It is not required. Most people do though. If no one brings anything, there will be nothing.
**Code of Conduct**: Though mostly understood, itโs still worth mentioning. We donโt have rules per se, but we highly discourage the following topics of discussion because they are likely to incite anti-social responses - Sex, Politics, Religion. Please donโt mistake this as an attempt to limit your free speech rights but rather a guide to a place and time for appropriate discussions.
**After the lights go out**: After the last sip of wine, when we clean up and turn the lights out, if you still havenโt had enough of us, it is typical for a group to get together and go to a local eatery for food and/or drinks or coffee.
Again, We look forward to meeting new members and reuniting with old friends.
Sincerely, ***Paul Uttermohlen***,

Wine Tasting - Newcomers Night
This is "***New Members Night***." If you are one of the many folks on the fence about coming to your first wine tasting with the *Hilliard Wine Club*, this is the night to come. There will be many other new people, so you won't be alone. And the regulars will be there to help make you feel welcome. We're a relaxed and warm group. We hope to see you.
**SIDE NOTE:** New members are welcome to ALL our Friday night wine tastings, but this night is a special overture to those who don't want to feel that they are the only new person in the room. Don't worry. You won't be. And don't hesitate to RSVP to other events.
**OLD MEMBERS NOTE**: Hey Old Members! You're not excluded from this event. We expect to see you there to help make the new members feel welcome.
**Sample 4 different wines** this Friday for $15 (*Cash or Venmo only please*). Glasses are provided. Bring a snack to share. Bring a bottle to share if you care to. See all the details below for the Hilliard Wine Club Wine Tasting. In Person. In Real Life. Actual Wine from glass bottles with corks and everything.
**Wine**: Tastings will be $15 for four samples as always. And you are welcome to bring a bottle of your favorite wine to share with others. Participation in the wine tastings is optional. But since youโre going, I will buy enough wine to cover you. If you bring your own wine and do not participate in the tasting you will only pay $10 to cover the door charge.
**Parking**: There are several public parking lots near the Alive614 hall. Please be careful to NOT park in private parking lots. They do tow. Check Google maps to scope out your space. Anyone who is early could easily find a parking space on the street nearby.
**Glasses**: โฆwill be provided. Please note that after the wine tasting, the glasses need to be returned to the boxes at the service table.
Please donโt mistake this as an attempt to limit your free speech rights but rather a guide to a place and time for appropriate discussions.
**Extra Wine**: After everyone has had their samples, we remove the pouring spouts and any remaining wine is poured freely to whomever wants it. I hate having leftover wine.
**Queen of Hearts**: The Queen of Hearts raffle is a fundraiser for the club and a Barnum and Bailey type extravaganza - minus the dancing ponies, clowns, and actual circus. Bring your ***cash*** as the Queen does not accept American Express or other plastic.

Shut Up & Write!ยฎ East Side Columbus
Join us for an hour of writing! Weโve discovered that itโs strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if itโs true for you at 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 11 at Streetlight Guild.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
**SCHEDULE:**
6:45ish - Quick introductions
7:00 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
8:00 - The End
**OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING** happens before and after the writing hour. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
**BEING LATE IS OKAY:** just show up and get settled! If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing & I look forward to seeing you at Streetlight Guild!
**WHAT SHOULD I BRING?**
Whatever you need to be able to write! You're welcome to bring earplugs/headphones if noise will bother you!
**OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS:**
* **RSVP:** Please RSVP by 6:00pm the evening of the meeting. This helps me know how many to expect, and if we'll need additional space!
* **COVID:** While masks are not required, please be mindful of the other writers around you and their comfort levels.
* **WIFI/OUTLETS:** Outlets are limited, so please ensure your devices are charged when you come! But Streetlight Guild does have free WiFi! Yay!
* **PARKING:** There is free public parking at Streetlight Guild.
