Maracatu Dance Course (x4 weeks)
Our growing dance section is always open to new members, and beginners are always welcome – no previous experience is required. Our group of dancers and percussionists is a friendly family of people from all over the world who have come together to meet new people and share a love for music, dance, and expression. Joining our classes is not just an opportunity to learn something new, it's a chance to meet a new group of people who regularly organise social events and perform together at events across London and the UK.
In this 4 week will teach dance choreography for Maracatu, with a focus on steps for the Orixa Oxossi and techniques for dancing whilst parading, in preparation for Notting Hill Carnival 2026.
Beginners and experienced dancers welcome. You do not need to join us for our NHCarnival parade to attend this course.
The classes are taught by Gladys who is from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She is a professional Brazilian, ballroom, and Latin dancer, teacher, choreographer and producer. She has performed all over Europe, Middle Eastern, Africa, and Asia, and has a wealth of experience teaching Brazilian and Latin dances for all ages and nationalities.
The sessions take place alongside Baque de Axé’s percussion rehearsals, bringing the true experience of Maracatu with live percussion and song.

Acting, Performance, Roles and Ritual
We often think of acting as something that happens on stage — but what if performance is part of everyday life? What if, in some sense, we are always performing? This session explores the idea that while acting may be occasional, performance could be constant, raising questions about the roles we play, how they shape our sense of self, and the rituals that may help us process emotion and experience a sense of catharsis.
From the roles we take on at work and in relationships, to the rituals that shape moments like weddings, funerals, and public events, much of what we do follows shared scripts and expectations. But does this mean we are simply playing roles — or is there something more to the self beneath them?
How aware are we of the roles we inhabit — and what difference, if any, is there between acting and everyday performance?
The idea for this evening’s event comes from the following discussion. You might like to listen to it in advance — it may give you a bit more to reflect on going into the conversation:
The session will begin with a short introduction (around 10 minutes) to set out the key ideas. After that, the emphasis is on discussion and participation. The aim is to create a space where ideas can be explored together, with time for questions, reflection, and open conversation.
No prior knowledge is needed — just curiosity and a willingness to think together.
**Where:** Downstairs room, Square Pig, Holborn (private room)
**NB:** The event begins at 7pm, doors open at 6:50pm. Event ends at 9pm

Madalitso Band: Film + Live concert
**Let's watch a documentary film about an inspirational band from Malawi (the Madalitso Band) and then enjoy their live concert.**
We will start by watching the documentary film "The Banjo Boys" by film director Johan Nayar - telling the tale of a two-man band from Malawi, formed by Yobu Maligwa and Yosefe Kalekeni. Film preview: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LrjHhsxh98](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LrjHhsxh98)
Having learnt their story we will then have the chance to see them in person - to experience their **live concert** and enjoy dancing to their life-affirming African rhythms in the Troubador, a popular music venue in South-West London.
The band members have overcome enormous personal and economic barriers - now is a rare chance to appreciate their unique sound and to be inspired by their resilient and joyous spirit.
This is a sold-out event but I have bought the **last 5 tickets** for our group. The cost is **£30** (please pay me in cash on the evening), which covers the cost of the ticket and a souvenir Banjo Boys badge. Please do not reply Yes to the event unless you are committed to coming, as tickets have been bought already in order to give members a chance to attend this special occasion.
Food and drink is available at the venue. **The Troubadour** was founded in 1954 and is now one of London's oldest independent music venues. It quickly became a vibrant cultural hub, with artists, actors, writers and musicians from all over the world. It established itself as a cornerstone venue in the British folk revival, hosting iconic names such as Bob Dylan, Davey Graham, Martin Carthy, Judy Collins, Paul Simon and many more.

The Troubador is near West Brompton (District Tube line / Overground / Train station) or Earls Court (District/Piccadilly Tube lines). The address is 265-267 Old Brompton Road, London SW5 9JA.

Drunken Philosophy: Are you really who you think you are? What is the "self"?
I have been studying the question of "self" online with Prof. Ellie Anderson and so I thought a prompt on the "self" might be interesting. Full confession: I had Claude create this prompt and I like it, so here goes:
Imagine a thought experiment that merges two classic puzzles:
> You undergo a procedure, performed neuron by neuron, in which every biological component of your brain is replaced with a functionally identical synthetic substitute. At each step, your behavior, memories, and personality remain unchanged. When the last neuron is swapped, is the consciousness experiencing the world still you? And — more pressingly — was there ever a continuous "you" to begin with?
### Questions to Wrestle With
* If consciousness is purely physical, does the *gradual* nature of the replacement matter, or is it equivalent to being destroyed and rebuilt?
* Could there be a "self" without continuity of experience — even moment to moment, while you sleep?
On a more practical level, consider the simpler case first: **hemispherectomy** patients — people who have had an entire cerebral hemisphere surgically removed — often retain a strong sense of personal identity and continuity. This suggests "you" are not rigidly tied to specific physical material. But does that vindicate the synthetic neuron case, or merely show that identity is more *flexible* than we thought — not that it can survive *complete* substrate replacement?
I used Claude so I could get this out today and let everyone have some time to consider it. Hope to see you at the Oracle. Sorry about the location change two weeks ago. That's what I get for trusting local weather predictions!
