Heart of Africa | Journey Across Central African Republic
Heart of Africa | Journey Across Central African Republic
In the heart of the African continent lies the **Central African Republic**, still known to some as the Empire of Central Africa, which suffered under a corrupt government for decades. However, the situation is gradually changing, making the country increasingly safer and attractive on a travel map. Bangui, the capital of the CAR, and biggest city with population of 400,000 is one of the bustling centres of the region. The most important lifeline of Bangui is the Ubangi River, the second largest tributary of the Congo. Although houses are made here of unfired bricks, with roofs covered in metal (in wealthier areas) or thatch (in villages), dominate the country's architecture, capital influences of French architecture are still visible - wide boulevards and avenues almost all lead to the Place de la Republique. The heart of Ubangi district is surrounded by an impressive residential district where the city's upper class resides. One of remarkable highlights is Boganda Museum providing detailed insight into the history of the country, development and traditions of the ethnic groups of Central Africa. Their culture is expressed by dance, art, and tradition. Another popular destination is the central market, which conveys the African way of life at first hand. The overall landscape of the Central African Republic includes hilly terrain, large areas of wet and savannah forests, a somewhat drier and barren northern region, parts of the Chad and Congo basins, the Mongos Mountains, and the 1,420m high Kayagangiri. Some areas of the country are noticeably sparsely populated, and where there are people, you will find Bantu, various Sahelo-Sudanese groups, Azande people, and pygmies who were the first inhabitants of the area. The residents of this constantly plundered country, live in accordance with the spirit of "true" Africa, and do not cease to be open, friendly, and generous people. **Pygmies** The legendary Pygmies who live here are known as the Ba'aka. They are one of the few primitive hunter-gatherer tribes on Earth. The Ba'aka are very kind, quiet people who are shy around strangers, but they are extremely helpful and peaceful. However, they struggle to adjust in situations where they are forced to leave the forests and settle on the savannahs because they are unable to build suitable homes for open spaces. They do not understand the concept of money or property rights as they are children of nature. Unfortunately, their time is limited as they are being forced to settle and lose their identity, which ultimately leads to their demise along with the forests that are being irresponsibly destroyed by companies from Lebanon or Yemen. **Let's go!** **DAY 1 :: Oubangui River** Morning flight lands in Bangui just after noon. You’re met with big smiles, cold water, and the unmistakable smell of red earth and river breeze. A short drive through the colourful streets drops you at the hotel, then straight onto the wide Oubangui River for a sunset cruise. On one side the skyline of Bangui, on the other the endless green wall of the Democratic Republic of Congo – the perfect welcome cocktail to Central Africa! **DAY 2 :: Bangui** Today is all about the capital’s heartbeat: the bustling central market, the National Museum (Boganda’s story is still remembered), Cathedral of Notre-Dame, and key historical monuments. In the afternoon, visit local communities for presentation of traditional Banda and Gbaya dances. Evening turns up the volume! Dinner followed by a proper Bangui banger, a night out in a local dance bar where the bass is loud and the moves are fearless. **DAY 3 :: Pygmies and falls** Early start south-west to the rainforest edge and the Aka pygmy village of Bossongo. The chief and his singers escort you into the green tunnel for the full immersion: jungle survival lessons, finding medicine plants, honey hunting from towering trees, net and bow practice, and building your own leaf hut before the whole village throws an epic dance party. Afternoon drive to the thunderous Boali Falls, a quick walk across the creaky liana bridge, and a stop at the hydroelectric dam that keeps Bangui’s lights on. On the way back we pass through a Fulani cattle camp – tall herders, long-horned cows, and another reminder that Africa never runs out of surprises. **DAY 4 :: Departure** Souvenir shopping before airport transfer for return flight home. Bye, bye Central Africa! **Level of Difficulty:** Easy, raw Africa. **Duration:** 4 days **Activities:** Trekking, boating, sightseeing, wildlife and indigenous tribes encounter. **Rooms:** 4 star hotel – double sharing, single at extra cost subject of availability at the time of booking. **Meals:** Restaurant meals excluded. Manhattan of the Desert | Hadhramaut, Yemen
Manhattan of the Desert | Hadhramaut, Yemen
Nothing seizes the imagination or satisfies the wanderlust like an exploration of the treasures of Southern Yemen! One of the **oldest areas of human civilization** and often out of reach for even the most intrepid of travelers, the **out-of-this-world architectural wonders** and **lost-in-time lifestyles** of the Yemenis will capture an explorer’s heart. [https://vimeo.com/810003078](https://vimeo.com/810003078) Bordered by the Red Sea and Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in the west, Saudi in the north and Oman to the east, Yemen is a desert country with **no permanent waterways** and continuously elevated with **high and dry mountains of jagged peaks and plateaus**. The highland regions are interspersed with seasonal river valleys surrounded by some of the most uniquely structured villages on the planet, with small towns of a few dozen perched entirely on boulders to a sea of skyscrapers of mud on arid plateaus overlooking deep ravines. Found on the steep escarpment of a broad plateau with sparse deeply sunk wadis throughout, the Hadhramis live in **densely built towns and villages** centred around wadis with **buildings clung to the hillside** or standing on plateaus at heights of 100 to 200 meters above the valley below. Easily the most notable of these villages is **Shibam Hadramout**, the “Manhattan of the Desert”, with a population of nearly 7000 spread among 500 mud houses reaching as high as 11 stories! Built of mud bricks with wooden floors these adobe structures require constant repair to prevent the rains from washing away their mud coatings. **Wadi Doa’n** contains numerous towns and villages along wadi banks, above surrounding terraces, and on top of plateaus with architectural gems that outshine even Hadramout, from the pint-sized **Haid Al-Jazeel** with less than 15 residents atop a boulder to the brightly coloured palaces of Bugshan. The city of Tarim is considered the theological, juridical, and academic center of the Hadramout Valley and is estimated to contain the highest concentration of descendants of the Prophet Mohammad anywhere in the world! Inhabited since the Stone Age and filled with mosques, palaces, libraries, and tombs and most distinguished for producing numerous scholars from it’s many educational institutes. **Let’s go!!** **Day 1 // Cairo to Seiyun** We’ll meet in Cairo for our flight to Seiyun Airport, after arrival and immigration formalities, transfer to **Al-Hawta Palace hote**l. We’ll take a quick visit to Alfalas Palace for photographs before dinner and overnight in Seiyun. **Day 2 // Aynat to Tarim** In the morning we’ll head to the Qaber Nabi Hood Prophet shrine followed by the walk around the Aynat area before lunch. Afterwards we head onwards to the town of Tarim, a Sufi village built in mud. After a stroll through the local markets and Al-Mihdar mosque, we’ll head back to Seiyun. Overnight in Al-Hawta Palace hotel. **Day 3 // Shibam Hadramout** Today we depart Seiyoun with a quick visit to the Al-Kathiri Palace before heading to Shibam Hadramout. Filled with mud constructed skyscrapers, it is known as the “Manhattan of Arabia”. We’ll explore the town in full and take photos for National Geographic then drive to Wadi Doa’n and Haid Al-Jizil with beautiful panorama of the villages and wadis below. Spend the night in Haid Al-Jizil lodge, with a pool view over a village perched atop a boulder! **Day 4 // Wadi Doa’n** After breakfast, start trek down to Hawfah village in Wadi Doa’n. Afterwards we’ll drive to see the many colorful palaces of Buqshan village before reaching Rehab for lunch. With many village stops along the way back to Haid Al-Jizil and sunset before dinner and rest. **Day 5 // Return to Hadramout** Today we will start our return journey back towards Seiyun with lovely stop at town of Hawta. In late afternoon we’ll return to Hadramout for sunset on the skyscrapers before return to Hawta for dinner in our grand hotel for proper send-off! **Day 6 // Seiyun to Cairo** In the morning free time at leisure. After lunch transfer to airport for flight to Cairo and further flight back home. **Level of Difficulty:** Easy with limited facilities. **Activities:** Trekking, sightseeing, cultural immersion. **Duration:** 6 Days. **Room & Meals:** Palace hotels double sharing, meals included, except restaurant meals on transfers. **Cost: AED 9,400** **incl. flights CAIRO - SEIYOUN and visa + permits to Yemen until FEB 19.** Cash payment only during briefings. **Specifically Excluded:** Flights to Cairo, meals on transfers. Silk & Spice | Weekend in Uzbekistan
Silk & Spice | Weekend in Uzbekistan
Imagine a place so beautiful that **conquerors, instead of burning it, bankrupted themselves building bigger domes** and taller minarets just to keep up. Uzbekistan is the Silk Road’s ultimate masterpiece of living legends: two immortal cities, one breathless whirlwind of domes and minarets, and enough beauty to quietly wreck your standards. [https://vimeo.com/215827711](https://vimeo.com/215827711) The Silk Road wasn’t a road, **it was the internet of the medieval world.** Ideas, gunpowder, paper, religions, and the best spices you’ve ever tasted all flowed through these dusty plains. Samarkand and Bukhara sat at the crossroads, grew obscenely rich, and spent every penny on turquoise tiles and gold leaf. The result? Architecture so breathtaking that six centuries later your phone still runs out of storage before your eyes do. Samarkand first: drop your bag and stand in Registan Square as the morning light hits the turquoise tiles for the first time. Three madrassas stare each other down across the sand like rival rappers, their façades exploding in cobalt, gold, and emerald. This was Tamerlane’s capital, the man who conquered half the known world and then commissioned buildings so perfect that the Taj Mahal is basically fan fiction. Gur-e-Amir, his mausoleum, glows under a ribbed turquoise dome that makes the sky look underdressed. Bibi-Khanym Mosque is so absurdly huge that **Timur executed the first set of architects for not going large enough**; the second team clearly got the memo. Then board the train to Bukhara, a city that feels like someone pressed pause on the 15th century. One hundred and forty monuments in a maze of caramel-coloured walls. The Kalyan **Minaret is so elegant that Genghis Khan, not exactly known for restraint, looked up and simply said “leave it.”** Lyabi-Khauz plaza at dusk is the kind of scene you thought only existed in movies: tea houses reflected in still water, mulberry trees older than most countries, and the call to prayer bouncing off ancient brick. Uzbek people have hospitality hardwired. Strangers invite you for tea, grandmothers stuff bread into your hands, and every second person wants to take a selfie with the foreigner who finally showed up. The Soviet chapter left concrete blocks on the outskirts, but the historic cores remain untouched, lovingly restored, and proudly lived in. **Weekend is short for a country this deep, but it’s enough to fall in love.** You’ll leave with the quiet realization that some places on Earth are so beautiful they almost feel unfair. **Uzbekistan doesn’t need filters. It just needs you for one weekend**. **Day 1 // Friday** Meet at Dubai Terminal 2 at 21:30 hrs for a direct flight to Samarkand departing at 23:10. Land in the heart of the Silk Road. **Day 2 // Saturday :: Samarkand** Immigration, quick hotel check-in and freshen up, then straight into the wonders of Tamerlane’s capital: * Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum – resting place of Timur and his dynasty, crowned by the iconic ribbed turquoise dome. * Registan Square – the breathtaking ensemble of three grand madrassas, the undisputed jewel of Samarkand. After lunch: * Bibi-Khanym Mosque – once the largest mosque in the Islamic world, a true testament to 14th-century ambition. * Shahi-Zinda Necropolis – the stunning “Avenue of Mausoleums” lined with glittering blue-tiled tombs from the 11th–15th centuries. Free time at lively Siab Bazaar: taste freshly baked nan bread, stock up on saffron and dried fruits, and browse silk embroidery and ceramics. Optional: unwind in a traditional hammam. Evening transfer by high-speed train to Bukhara. Check in and overnight in the historic centre. **Day 3 // Sunday :: Bukhara** Full morning discovering Bukhara’s treasures: * Lyabi-Hauz Ensemble – the serene square with its pond, mulberry trees and surrounding madrassas. * Mausoleum of Ismail Samani – a 10th-century masterpiece of brick architecture. * Ark Citadel – the ancient fortress and seat of power for centuries. * Bolo-Hauz Mosque – famous for its beautifully painted wooden columns. * Poi-Kalyan Complex – majestic Kalyan Minaret, grand mosque and the active Miri-Arab Madrassah. Late dinner, then transfer to the airport for the return flight via Tashkent. Landing in Dubai Monday at 07:00. **Duration:** Weekend only! **Activities:** Sightseeing and immersion into unheard history. **Accommodation & meals:** 4\* hotels (double sharing rooms), 5\* hotel option available at extra cost. Meals excluded. **Cost:** **AED 3,850 incl. flights** **until FEB 13th.** Past this date cost will change. **Single accommodation:** 380 AED extra. **Specifically excluded:** Any cost related to visas, melas, visit in Hamam. **Visas:** **UAE residents** with 3 months validity of residence visa **are eligible for free entry.** More info: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Uzbekistan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_policy_of_Uzbekistan) *It is sole responsibility of trip participant to secure admission to country of destination.* See you under the domes! 🏰💠 Trekkup Crew [Whatsapp 0504848238](https://wa.me/971504848238) / [info@trekkup.com](info@trekkup.com) [Find all trekkups at linktr.ee/trekkup](https://linktr.ee/trekkup)

Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to “pin the blame” on someone or something. If you don’t find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse. Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival, while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well. Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, don’t know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe you’ve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship. Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action? Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships! Break free from self imposed limitations Here we will discuss: • How to “erase” the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isn’t always repeating past mistakes. • Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you? • Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it? • Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love? • Fights & arguments - what's really behind them? • What underlies “corrosive criticism” or the need to invalidate self or others? • How one can stably change one’s outlook on life so they can affect positive change? • Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them? • How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about? • How to enhance one’s own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or one’s career? Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general. Learn where painful experiences are “stored” and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can “erase” those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become “toxic” personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you won’t be tripped up trusting the wrong person. Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there. This class is held at the Dianetics and Scientology Life Improvement Center.

Rhino Barn Tour @ The Wilds
Rhino Barn Tour @ The Wilds
**Summary** For this event, we will do the [Rhino Barn Tour](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) at [The Wilds](https://www.thewilds.org/), a ten-thousand acre conservation center in Muskingum County. It is the largest such center in North America and one of the largest in the entire world. During this tour, we'll visit The Wilds' rhino herd in their state-of-the-art heated barns and learn how The Wilds' animal management team takes care of one of the largest herds of rhinos outside of Africa and Asia. **The date and time of this tour** We will be doing the 1:00 p.m. [Rhino Barn Tour](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) on Saturday, February 28. The tour is scheduled to last 90 minutes. **What you need to do to attend** Signing up here on Meetup will not get you into The Wilds for the tour. You must go out to The Wilds' [website](https://www.thewilds.org/) and [buy a ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour). Please [purchase your ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour), then sign up here on Meetup so I know how many to expect. **Attendance cap** There are only eight total slots/tickets available for this tour. As I obviously have already bought one of the tickets, that leaves seven spaces for everyone else. If you are interested in this event, I urge you to [buy a ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) at The Wilds' website as soon as possible. Since their website is obviously public, nothing prevents other people having nothing to do with *GOhio!* from buying their own tickets, thereby potentially taking an available slot away from you. **Additional notes on attendance** I have now run several events at The Wilds. While the location of The Wilds and the pricing of the tickets generally leads to small turnouts, the people who have gone have all enjoyed it and were glad they went. If you've never been to The Wilds and you like zoos or animals at all, you are likely to find any tour at The Wilds to be a rewarding experience. **Tickets and pricing** [Tickets](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) for this tour are $95, or $76 if you're a Wilds' member. I've posted screen shots, below, to help you be sure you're buying tickets for the correct event. Wilds' memberships pay for themselves if you go to The Wilds at least twice a year, and [Columbus Zoo members](https://www.columbuszoo.org/membership) get a discount on memberships to The Wilds. I will always run at least two events a year at The Wilds. Tickets for all Wilds' tours must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance of the actual tour. **Cancellations and refunds** Per The Wilds' [Cancellation Policy](https://www.thewilds.org/policies): *In order to be eligible for refund and accrue no rescheduling fees, cancellations must be made at least 14 days in advance of reservation. Cancellations made within 14 days of reservation will not receive a refund.* You may [contact The Wilds](https://www.thewilds.org/contact) at (740) 638-5030 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., or you can email them at information@thewilds.org. **Waiver of liability** After you purchase your ticket, you will likely be asked to fill out a waiver of liability. This is a very short document and should take you no more than two minutes to complete. **Where we'll meet** We will meet at The Wilds, whose actual address is [14000 International Rd, Cumberland, OH 43732](https://www.google.com/maps/place/14000+International+Rd,+Cumberland,+OH+43732/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x8837dae07a595557:0xa1ceca93325a8bd1?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111). Please try to be there by 12:30 p.m. For most Wilds' tours, a shuttle bus will take you to the actual spot of the tour. So think of this as though you're going to the airport to catch a flight. It helps to be on time. The Wilds generally asks that people arrive at least thirty minutes because the scheduled start time of their tour. **GPS / Getting to The Wilds** The Wilds is in a very rural area, but I've never had a problem getting there with my GPS (I have Verizon). I've also uploaded a JPG map, below, of Muskingum County. Sometimes, though, it's hard to get a signal when you're at The Wilds and getting ready to leave. So you might want to consider downloading an offline map in Google Maps. Your cell phone should pick up a signal, however, within a few minutes after you leave. The Wilds' Visitor Center does have free Wi-Fi. **Carpooling?** If you want to carpool, I recommend discussing this in the comments, below, to this event. While I don't myself carpool, I will do what I can to help you arrange something if I can. **The weather** Dress for the weather. Just because the barn is heated doesn't mean it will be warm. And wear closed-toed shoes. Wilds' tours typically run no matter what the weather is. **After the tour** Once we're done with the rhinos, we'll head over to the very highly rated [Y-Bridge Brewing Company](https://ybridgebrewing.com/). The brewery is about thirty minutes from The Wilds, and it will be on the way back to Columbus for most, if not all, of us. The brewery's actual address is [1417 Linden Ave Ste D, Zanesville, OH 43701](https://www.google.com/maps/place/1417+Linden+Ave+d,+Zanesville,+OH+43701/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x8837edd6cc50824f:0xe3a0af1ccb2aefbf?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111). Y-Bridge Brewing does not serve food; however, they have several [food options](https://ybridgebrewing.com/food-options). I encourage you to check these out ahead of time on their website for yourself. However, here are a few of them: *Within walking distance -- 120 feet away* * [Angry Bull Saloon](https://www.facebook.com/AngryBullSaloonZanesville/) (pizza & subs) * The Corner Pub Sports Bar and Grill (classic bar food) *Delivery options -- [Door Dash](https://www.doordash.com/)* * [4 Star Pizza](https://fourstarpizza.com/), (740) 452-9300 * [Donatos](https://www.donatos.com/), (740) 452-7900 * [Pizza Cottage](https://www.pizza-cottage.com/), (740) 455-6000 * [Dominos](https://www.dominos.com/), (740) 455-3126 * [Papa John's](https://www.papajohns.com/), (740) 450-4100 If you live in the area or can't make The Wilds but still want to meet us at the brewery, that's fine too.
