Meetup in the Park: Minimal living and Tiny Home Living
Meetup in the Park: Minimal living and Tiny Home Living
**About this event:** Have you been dreaming of going tiny? Are you curious about minimal living, off-grid setups, or just downsizing your life in Victoria? You are not alone! We are launching a new community for enthusiasts to connect, share stories, and support one another. (Please book ticket in EventBrite [here](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/monthly-minimal-living-meetup-tiny-home-tickets-1983064391979?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl) ) Imagine a life with less clutter, less debt, and more freedom. We are building a community in Victoria for those who want to step away from the traditional housing market and embrace tiny homes and minimal living. For our first-ever meetup, we are keeping it simple. We’ll meet in the park to introduce ourselves and discuss what we want to create together. Whether you want to talk about the technical side (trailers, solar, regulations) or the lifestyle side (downsizing, remote work), this is the place to start. Come along, make new friends, and let’s talk about how to make big dreams happen in tiny spaces. Please book your ticket https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/monthly-minimal-living-meetup-tiny-home-tickets-1983064391979?utm-campaign=social&utm-content=attendeeshare&utm-medium=discovery&utm-term=listing&utm-source=cp&aff=ebdsshcopyurl **What to expect:** This is a strictly casual, unstructured meetup. No presentations, no sales pitches, and no pressure. Just a relaxed afternoon in the park with like-minded people. We’re simply gathering to discuss: * Who is already living the tiny life? * Who is dreaming/planning? * What are the local hurdles (council rules, finding land, etc.)? * How can we support each other? **Who should come:** Whether you have your tiny house plans drawn up, you're already living in one, or you just watched a documentary and thought "I could do that"—you are welcome here. **What to bring:** * A camping chair or picnic rug. * Your own snacks/drinks. * Sun protection (or an umbrella—it is Melbourne/Victoria after all!). **About Your Host** Hi, I’m Karen. After exploring over 50 countries, I’ve chosen Melbourne as my home. As an entrepreneur, I’ve come to realize that we don't need much to be truly happy. In fact, nature provides us with so many "free luxuries"—from sunlight to green spaces—that we often overlook in the modern world. I am channeling this philosophy into building my own tiny home in Victoria this year. I started this group because I realized that while the tiny house movement is growing, the journey can feel a bit lonely. I want to build a supportive local community where we can share resources, untangle the regulations, and help each other turn these small dreams into reality. * **Wet Weather Plan:** (e.g., "If it rains, we will move to a cafe close by.")

Philosophy Roundtable: Can a secular society replace the functions of religion?
Philosophy Roundtable: Can a secular society replace the functions of religion?
Please join us this Sunday as we discuss if a secular society can replace the functions of religion (or spirituality), and what this may mean for our lives. We will look at this at both the social and individual level. **We will meet at the Queensberry Hotel, 593 Swanston Street, Carlton (100m north of previous location) at 2pm for a 2:15pm start sharp.** **We kindly ask attendees to pay $5 to attend to help with MeetUp costs & venue costs. This is not mandatory, but if you are a regular member it would be appreciated. Any extra moneys will go towards buying food and drinks for the table. The venue also expects us to spend money as a group, so grateful if everyone could buy a drink from the venue.** There is no pre-requisite preparation necessary, nor a philosophical background, all that is required is a curious mind. These discussions are both a Socrates Cafe style discussion and lively metaphysical dojo, in the spirit of learning and friendly debate, so please feel free to challenge assumptions and be prepared to have your own assumptions challenged. Find below some questions to consider, however these are free-ranging events and the below serve as a springboard for the discussion: **What might religion offer?** \- Meaning and existential orientation \- Moral formation \- Community and belonging \- Ritual and shared identity \- Authority and moral limits **Is religion needed?** \- Are some countries \(perhaps Australia\, perhaps the Nordic countries\) doing well with a secular society? \- Are they living off the moral inheritance of Christianity? If so\, how long will it last? \- Do we create quasi\-religions instead\, such as nationalism? \- If religion provides useful functions\, can we just replace them with something else? \- Does this question look different elsewhere\, such as in East Asian societies\. **Philosophers to draw upon** \- religion as social glue \(Durkheim\, Tocqueville\, Haidt\) \- religion as psychological response \(Hume\, James\) \- religion as declining foundation of morality \(Nietzsche\, MacIntrye\, Dostoevsky\) \- religion as historical force shaping society \(Weber\, Marx\) \- religion as replaceable or reformable \(Mill\, Comte\, Kant\) Hope to see you there!

Carpooling is a great way to start the day by meet new people, share a few laughs, and arrive at the trail together. If a driver forgets, gets mixed up, or doesn’t pick you up, Social Hikes Australia (and your driver) are not liable for any inconvenience caused. For this reason, it is best to keep things simple with the driver you first arranged with. In the transport chat, drivers will share their preferred pick-up locations often major CBD train stations like Parliament, Richmond, South Yarra, Southern Cross, or North Melbourne. How To Flow Through Group Conversations When You're Anxious
How To Flow Through Group Conversations When You're Anxious
🌟 **How To** **Be A Social Butterfly And...** ### *Practice Group Conversations the Neurodivergent Way!!* Do you ever watch people effortlessly move between groups at events and wonder how they do it? Do you want to feel confident joining conversations, adding thoughtful insights, and creating real connection without forcing yourself to perform? This session is a practice lab for learning how to navigate groups with awareness, curiosity, and genuine presence. *** 💬 **What This Session Is About** In many social spaces the real skill is not talking more. The real skill is **listening deeply and adding value at the right moment**. In this workshop we explore how to become the kind of person who can enter conversations naturally, understand what people are really talking about, and contribute something meaningful. This workshop helps you practise: • listening to the context of a conversation before speaking • noticing what people might be missing, needing, or feeling • adding thoughtful insight at the right moment • asking powerful questions that deepen the discussion • recognising whether a group needs ideas, empathy, energy, or curiosity When you listen carefully enough, what you say can land in a way that makes people pause and think "That was thoughtful. I never considered that before." *** 🧠 **The Real Secret of Working a Room** Many people believe social success in groups comes from talking about themselves or trying to impress others. In reality the opposite is true. People remember the person who **added value** to the conversation. Sometimes that value is an idea. Sometimes it is a thoughtful question. Sometimes it is simply recognising and validating the emotion behind what someone is sharing. We will practise learning to notice: • what people are talking about intellectually • what emotions might be underneath the conversation • when someone might need empathy and space • when someone might want energetic discussion and ideas Different groups need different things. The skill is learning to sense what will help the most. *** 🔄 **How the Session Runs** The meetup is divided into two practical phases. ***\-\-\-\-\-\-First half: spontaneous mingling practice\-\-\-\-\-\-*** Participants will move between small groups and practise: • listening in before speaking • understanding the context of the discussion • contributing thoughtfully at the right moment • experimenting with adding value to different conversations This is about observing group dynamics and learning what people might actually need in that moment. ***\-\-\-\-\-\-Second half: intentional group navigation\-\-\-\-\-\-*** In the second phase we practise approaching groups with intention. You might enter a group with a simple internal goal such as: • learning something about a topic • contributing helpful insight • building a meaningful connection • supporting someone who seems unheard But the key principle is this: * **you pursue the goal by giving value rather than trying to take something.** When people feel that you are trying to extract attention, approval, or connection, the interaction often feels draining. When people feel that you are offering curiosity, attention, insight, or encouragement, the interaction becomes energising. Your focus becomes listen carefully understand what might help and offer that freely without expecting anything in return. *** 🌱 **What You Will Practise** • joining conversations in a natural, respectful way • reading group dynamics and energy • deciding when to contribute and when to listen • asking questions that deepen discussion • recognising when a group values empathy versus ideas • moving between groups without feeling awkward • adding genuine value to conversations You will begin to notice that when you read people accurately and contribute something meaningful, their energy changes. They lean in. They become more animated. They remember you. Real connections start to form because **you helped bring the conversation to life.** *** 👋 **A Note From the Facilitator** As an autistic and neurodivergent coach I once found group conversations extremely confusing. Through years of practice in recruitment, interviewing, social events, friendships, and coaching, I realised that group interaction is not a personality trait. It is a learnable skill. This session is about experimenting, observing, and practising that skill together in a supportive environment. Progress matters more than perfection. If by the end of the evening you understand a little more about how to listen, add value, and navigate groups with confidence, that is a meaningful step forward. *** 📝 **Before and After** You will be invited to optionally share: • what feels hardest about group conversations • what situations tend to overwhelm you socially • what kind of interactions you would love to feel more confident in At the end we will gather feedback so future sessions can evolve based on what participants actually find most helpful. The goal is not to perform. The goal is to **learn how to bring energy, curiosity, and value into the spaces you enter.** * ***And when you do that, people remember you for it.....*** ***No more dead end numbers and contact cards....*** ***Stoke real connection, with real skills and practice.***

Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations. If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!). **HOW IT WORKS** **Step 1: Bring a topic** Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event. **Step 2: Circle up & share** We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds. **Step 3: Walk, talk & float** We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!" **Step 4: Feel more alive** Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times. *For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)* **HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC** A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about. Recent topics include: * "What are you passionate about right now?" * "What makes a good friend?" * "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?" * "How do you want to be remembered?" * "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?" Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter. **WHAT TO EXPECT** This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.* But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here. **FAQ** * Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk! * We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space. * We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space. * Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know. * Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome — please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic! **LOGISTICS** * If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event. * This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs. * Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details. * If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. 🤠👋 **IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEPER...** [The Board](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board) is the next step: a high-trust collective for renaissance people devoted to creating, connecting, and building lives that light us up. * This is a global HQ for people who crave big talk, deep connection, and dream collaborations with people across industries. COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/). Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers. For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.
