Discussion: "Is there good and bad taste - or is it all subjective?"
Discussion: "Is there good and bad taste - or is it all subjective?"
***Is there an objective standard of good aesthetic taste?*** *Or is it just a matter of subjective preferences? Can those preferences be authentic, or are they shaped by social pressures and imitation?* In this session of **Marginal Thoughts**, we will explore whether aesthetic taste can be evaluated or whether it remains irreducibly subjective. Before challenging the maxim that there is “no accounting for taste”, we will engage with the view of the philosopher David Hume by watching a short video and - ideally - reading his essay on the topic: * [Short video by Dr. Elie Anderson](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOSDwPtvjzA), summarizing Hume's essay (\~11 min) * Optional but highly recommended: Hume's essay "The Standard of Taste" in either the [version lightly edited for accessibility](https://www.earlymoderntexts.com/assets/pdfs/hume1757essay2.pdf) or in its [original version](https://davidhume.org/texts/empl1/st) (\~45 min) Here we will see Hume not only account for taste, but give a 5-point checklist of what a good judge of taste must possess. Could it really be so simple?! **How to prepare** Watching the video would be the minimal preparation, whereas additionally reading the essay is ideal but can be skipped in a pinch. As you engage with the material, try to identify at least one point of curiosity, confusion, or uncertainty - these will be natural starting points for our discussion. **What to expect** This is an in-person, conversational meetup in English. The goal isn't to debate or lecture - it’s to explore ideas and leave with better questions than we arrived with.

Duo Faryna-Satorre from Buenos Aires live at Milonga Itinerante
Duo Faryna-Satorre from Buenos Aires live at Milonga Itinerante
Something you won't wanna miss! Latin Grammy nominee and winner of the prestigious Mercedes Sosa and Carlos Gardel awards will delight us with their live music to dance, listen, and enjoy! This Wednesday we welcome Hugo Satorre and Emiliano Faryna at Milonga Itinerante! This time in Galeria Ideal (Itinerante means this is a nomad Milonga, taking place at varied locations in town). We could highlight their extensive path in the tango scene in Buenos Aires and abroad, and how stunning it is to enjoy their mastery live. Or the recognitions they’ve got in Argentina and internationally. What makes them ultra special, though, is the deep and felt connection they create... Between them and the audience, and between dancers. Many in the Vienna tango scene have experienced them in past editions of the Milonga Itinerante and await their visit every year. Are you ready to get transported to Buenos Aires with their music? **See you on May 6th at 20:00!** **This time at Galeria Ideal** **Geibelgasse 14-16, 1150 Wien** TDJ Don Xello **New to Milonga Itinerante?** Its name means it takes place at varied locations in town. Always varied, always fresh, it’s a welcoming space that brings together dancers from different backgrounds, who enjoy tango music, meeting new people and experiencing tango as a living culture. If you’ve missed it, now it’s your chance! **Get your tickets [here](https://www.jessicagerdel.com/duo-faryna-satorre-vienna) or at the door.** Booked in advance on the website €20, at the door €25
Exhibition: Bellotto & Canaletto
Exhibition: Bellotto & Canaletto
Please read everything! Check this event again on the day (weather updates, last‑minute changes, etc.). And please be polite: cancel your RSVP if you cannot attend. _______________________________________________________ This is NOT a guided tour. I am going to have a look at the new exhibition! **Buy your ticket incl. timeslot (7pm) beforehand online!** Owners of the annual card or the bundesmuseencard: you will need to book a timeslot too. You ll find the number of your card in the email from your purchase of the annual card. [Link to book the ticket & timeslot.](https://shop.khm.at/en/tickets/canaletto-bellotto-200000000008445-T429-01) Tip: I added the audio guide for 5€ to my order. About the exhibition: "The famous city views of Giovanni Antonio Canal (better known as Canaletto) and his nephew Bernardo Bellotto (who often called himself Canaletto as well, to emphasize his connection to his celebrated uncle) take centre stage in the upcoming exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. With the help of optical devices, such as the camera obscura, these two Venetian painters surveyed European cities with scientific precision, yet creatively transformed what they saw into grand pictorial scenes. Both artists painted spectacular views of their hometown, Venice, but they both left the lagoon city to pursue their careers abroad: Canaletto moved to London, while Bellotto worked in Dresden and Vienna. Featuring major international loans – many of which have never before been exhibited in Austria – the exhibition invites you to rediscover the eighteenth-century city and two artists whose careers mirror a Europe shaped by mobility, war, and uncertainty." khm
Day DJ Series: DJ Joy Resistance
Day DJ Series: DJ Joy Resistance
# **Day DJ Series at Villa Vida: DJ Joy Resistance** Day DJ is a weekly series at Villa Vida Café. Each Friday, local DJs take over the space and share their sound in a daytime setting. The focus is on new talent, experimentation, and community. This is a place to build sets, try ideas, and connect through music. The format is open and relaxed. You can come to listen, work, meet people, or stay for the full set. The aim is to create a consistent platform where DJs grow their practice and support each other. *** ## **DJ Joy Resistance** DJ Joy Resistance brings an approach rooted in energy, connection, and movement. Their sets focus on creating a shared atmosphere rather than sticking to rigid genre boundaries, allowing space for experimentation and flow. *** DJs have played a central role in queer culture. In spaces where queer people were excluded, DJs created environments where identity and expression could exist. Through sound, they shaped rooms, built connections, and guided shared experiences. Many of the sounds and practices that define nightlife today grew out of queer spaces. House, disco, and club culture were shaped by queer communities, especially Black and Latinx scenes. Day DJ continues this history by creating space for new voices and keeping this culture active.

Geld arbeiten lassen.
Unklar.
