Mountain Skills 1 Course
***Mountain Skills for Only €120 / course***
Ever wanted to learn the skills you need to become a competent navigator in the Irish mountains, the UK, the Alps or beyond!
As a fully qualified mountain guide and course provider for Mountaineering Ireland and the UK, I run Mountain Skills which is a nationally accredited course and is delivered in an upland environment.
Hiking in Ireland can be challenging not only because of its wilderness, but the island has very little sign posted hiking trails in the mountains or hills. In addition to this, as being an island in the Atlantic we experience the forces of nature; storms and weather events. In other words, Ireland is probably the best place in Europe to learn a new outdoor skill like Mountain Skills.
The aim of this course is to help you learn the skills you need to get out hiking in the hills and mountains independently, safely and responsibly. You will learn how to navigate with confidence by any type of weather conditions.
A Mountain Skills course is run over 2 days in an upland environment and covers:
Map reading, map description, map scale, contour lines, land and ground features, navigation legs, simple navigation techniques, setting the map, the 5 D, estimation of direction & destination, grid reference, mountain hazards, hypothermia, mountain environment, timing, pacing, route planning, route card, emergency procedures, personal equipment, safe movement skills, river crossing and much more…
Some level of fitness is essential in taking part in this course.
Each course (MS1 / MS2) is a 20 hour syllabus which includes indoor and outdoor sessions and night navigation (MS2)
**A course includes:**
Maps and compass provided, tea breaks, course notes, 3 route cards, a free hiking day practice as part of a weekend.
**For Only €100 for under 18 and students and €120 for adults.**
Accommodations can be provided
Her are few additionnal dates:

Summer Solstice Dublin Mountains Evening Hike
On Friday 26th June we will have an evening walk in the Dublin Mountains - with some of the loveliest views around Dublin. Although it's 5 days after the actual summer solstice, sunset is at 9:57pm so we have plenty of time to enjoy the long summer evening.
From the meeting point we will take the 44B bus to Johnnie Fox's pub, known for being one of the highest pubs in Ireland. We will then walk to Ballyedmondiff Wedge Tomb (also known as Giant's Grave), Two Rock, Fairy Castle and Three Rock before finishing up with a quick drink in the Blue Light pub (if we wish). There is then a pleasant 15-20 mins walk to the bus stop where there are buses to Dundrum & Dublin City Centre and Glencairn Luas stop (with Green Line services).
If the weather is good, we may stop for a short picnic along the way, so feel free to bring food and drink.
Feel free to come on the walk even if you haven't been to a meet up before. This is a great way to meet new people and see new places.
\*\*\* If you wish to wander off during a break then it's probably OK but please agree with the organisers a time you'll return so we're not waiting for you \*\*\*
[Date] 26th June (FRIDAY)
[Time] 17:15 \~ 22:00. The 44B bus is due to leave at 17:30 but please arrive in plenty of time in case it leaves a few minutes early. This is the last bus of the day to the walk's start (Johnnie Fox's) so unfortunately if you miss it then there's no alternative.
[Place] Bus Stop 7981 on the Dundrum Bypass (R117) near Main Street and Dundrum Luas. If you're coming on the Luas from the city centre, first cross over the tracks via the crossing. Take the lift down or stairs down to street level. Walk straight ahead and then turn right on Main Street and then left on the Dundrum Bypass. The bus stop is on the left (pictured with the bus). It's near the Dominic Smith Expert electrical shop in Dundrum.
For those coming on the Luas, I will be at Dundrum Luas on the northbound platform at 17:10 and wait for 5 mins before walking to Bus Stop 7981. If you miss me then please follow the above instructions to walk to the bus stop.

\*Please take good care of your own belongings, the meetup's organisers will not take any responsibility for any lost items before, during or after the meetup. Also please take care when crossing roads as though this walk is mainly in parks and on minor roads there will be a few busy roads to cross. Please wear suitable footwear as some of the paths may be uneven or steep. It is also recommended to bring water to avoid dehydration. Bring warm clothes and a waterproof jacket or umbrella in case of inclement weather.
