Secular Assembly - Darwin Day 2026 - evolution of the Darwin-Wallace story
### Join us at the Secular Assembly - Darwin Day edition!
Humanists celebrate Darwin Day to honour curiosity, evidence, and the scientific spirit that helps us better understand our world. Weâre excited to welcome Dr John back as he revisits Darwin with a fascinating talk that separates myth from historical reality. In an age of fake news and AI-generated content, learning how stories are shaped, distorted, and believed has never been more importantâfor all of us.
Secular Assembly by Humanist Society Singapore is a monthly gathering of humanists, freethinkers, atheists, agnostics and other like-minded people. This month's Assembly is held in collaboration with Harmony in Diversity Gallery (HDG). Before the Assembly, there will be a optional 45mins tour of HDG.
Registration is required, please register at eventbrite linked in here: [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/humanistsg-the-darwin-wallace-story-from-history-to-pop-science-mythology-tickets-1980802752354](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/humanistsg-the-darwin-wallace-story-from-history-to-pop-science-mythology-tickets-1980802752354)
## Featured talk - The evolution of the Darwin-Wallace story: from history to pop science mythology
**Speaker**: Dr John van Wyhe (Historian of Science, Senior Lecturer at the National University of Singapore, and Director of Darwin Online [https://darwin-online.org.uk/](https://darwin-online.org.uk/ "https://darwin-online.org.uk/"))
The story of Darwin and Wallace is often told as a tale of injustice, where Wallace was overshadowed by the more famous Darwin. However, this popular version only emerged in the late 20th century and is not supported by historical evidence. Recent research shows that the original account, accepted for over a century, was accurate and that Wallace was not treated unfairly. The myth persists because stories of overlooked outsiders resonate strongly with modern audiences. This reminds us how easily history can be reshaped to fit the values and emotions of different generations.
#### Assembly brief
There will be: short sing alongs, a talk/sharing, community sharing of personal stories and experiences, moments for reflection and gratitude, and more.
\*\*Collaboration with Harmony in Diversity Gallery (HDG)\*\*The Harmony in Diversity Gallery (HDG) was developed by the Ministry of Home Affairs in collaboration with community partners and organisations like the Inter-Religious Organisation (IRO). The Gallery aims to promote an appreciation of Singaporeâs rich religious diversity. It hopes this will foster a spirit of give and take, mutual respect and understanding, necessary to nurture and strengthen the religious peace and harmony we enjoy today.

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Google Analytics Alternatives
**Google Analytics Alternatives**
Is it finally time to make the switch away from Google Analytics? Two-and-a-half years ago Jason Packer asked this question at Columbus Web Analytics Wednesday.
Since then: Googleâs Universal Analytics has been sunset, weâve changed our name to Columbus Data & Analytics Wednesday, and Jason has released two editions of his book âGoogle Analytics Alternativesâ.
Fresh off the release of the 2nd edition of his book, we thought it was time to re-open this conversation. While people love to complain about it, GAâs market share has remained relatively constant (at least in the United States). Why is that? You wonât find any complaints about GA4 in this talk, but rather an overview of whatâs currently available in the market and how to frame your decision-making process.
Weâll also be giving out some free copies of Jasonâs book! So even if youâve got a âGA4Lyfeâ tattoo (no judgement), thereâs free books to go with the free pizza and beer.

**TALK ABSTRACT:**
AI is all the hype these days; however, despite (or maybe because of) the excitement around it, a high percentage of AI projects fail. Projects that are over budget, delayed, or that fail to scale past the POC phase are very common. In many of these scenarios, choosing the right approach can be as critical as the solution itself. Should you build a tailored machine learning model, leverage the power of large language models (LLMs), or integrate with AI copilots? Each option has unique strengths, trade-offs, and resource requirements, and the key to success lies in aligning your choice with your business goals and technical constraints.
In this talk, we will go beyond the basic concepts and definitions to provide a practical guide that allows attendees to navigate these decisions through real-world case studies. We will examine scenarios in which different AI paradigms were chosen, discuss the factors that influenced those decisions, and outline the process for evaluating needs, constraints, and outcomes. From assessing data availability and team expertise to balancing cost and scalability, you'll gain insights into the critical considerations that guide the selection process.
By the end of this session, youâll have a clear process for determining whether machine learning, LLMs, or copilots are best suited to your AI challenges and understand the resources and strategies needed to bring your chosen solution to life. This talk is ideal for decision-makers, technical leads, and innovators seeking to demystify AI implementation and maximize the impact of their investments.
