The Wife of Martin Guerre by Janet Lewis
The Wife of Martin Guerre by Janet Lewis
The Wife of Martin Guerre (first published 1941) is a short novel by American writer Janet Lewis based on the story of Martin Guerre, the 16th-century French peasant who apparently returned home to his wife after a long absence but was later revealed to be an impostor. The novel has its origins in research Lewis made into trials based on circumstantial evidence, after reading in-depth about famous trials turning on circumstantial evidence, which prompted her to write a pamphlet describing the risks of using it.

Personal development discussion: 3 topics to choose, topics in description
Personal development discussion: 3 topics to choose, topics in description
ENG The topics we will vote to discuss are Motivation, Fear and Overconfidence. 2 emotion topics and 1 personal challenges topic to vote for discussion. We will try as a group of random people to sit down and talk about emotions or personal challenges. Not necessarily to find a solution or an improvement, but to share perspectives and maybe discover new perspectives. Some people like to talk, some like to listen, at the start of each event, declare if you would prefer to participate in the discussion or prefer to listen in and chime in with an occasional question. If only danish speaking people are coming we will speak danish, if there are non danish speaking people coming we will speak English.
The role of the STATE, your NANNY or not? Nudging? behavioral economics? FORCE?
The role of the STATE, your NANNY or not? Nudging? behavioral economics? FORCE?
**“The Role of the State (!) — Nanny, Neutral Referee, or Quiet Manipulator?”** Freedom, Responsibility, Behavioral Economics, and Who Really Decides The modern state no longer just taxes, regulates, and enforces laws. It nudges. It designs choices. It subtly shapes behavior—often in the name of health, safety, equality, or efficiency. But where is the line between helping citizens and controlling them? This isn’t a left–right debate or a policy seminar. It’s a philosophical conversation about power, freedom, and the assumptions we make about human behavior. *** **Topics we’ll touch on:** * Is the “nanny state” a myth—or a growing reality? * Behavioral economics: helping people choose better, or bypassing free will? * Are nudges respectful guidance—or soft coercion? * Who decides what “good behavior” actually is? * Can freedom survive if choices are engineered? * Do people need protection from themselves—or from the state? * And ultimately… what kind of citizens does this model create: autonomous adults or well-managed subjects? Casual discussion. No background in economics or political theory required—just curiosity and a willingness to reflect honestly. Whether you value strong institutions, personal freedom, or feel torn between the two—you’re not alone. Let’s examine the invisible hands shaping our choices—and ask how much guidance we really want.
