Wednesday evening Mindfulness at Unity of Gaithersburg.
Wednesday evening Mindfulness at Unity of Gaithersburg.
Mindfulness Meditation group practice every Wednesday evening at Unity of Gaithersburg. Mindfulness practice is not about achieving some special state of mind; it is more about noticing the experience you are having without trying to change it. This interesting video suggests why you might sit and watch your mind wander off. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmmBF8eTl18 This noticing tends to shift your nervous system from a 'fight-or-flight' state to a more relaxed and receptive state. In this receptive mental state, you begin to see your own experience differently and, over time, see other people and the world differently. Also, it is good for you: "the effect of regular meditation on the cortex was so profound that fifty-year-old meditators had a prefrontal cortex that looked like that of a twenty-five-year-old" [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PLRZVTT](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PLRZVTT) Here is an interesting and funny take on meditation by Ajahn Brahm: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR60RRmXeYs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TR60RRmXeYs). If you arrive on time, there will be an introduction at the beginning, if you arrive late, find a chair and join us. There will be some discussion after. This is a free event, but contributions to the church's expenses are welcome. You can just show up this Wednesday or subsequent Wednesdays. Authentic Relating- Unintentional Gaslighting: What to Say Instead
Authentic Relating- Unintentional Gaslighting: What to Say Instead
Sometimes we unintentionally invalidate the people we care about. Phrases like *ā€œYou’re overreacting,ā€ ā€œThat’s not what happened,ā€* or *ā€œYou’re too sensitiveā€* may seem small — yet they can quietly erode trust and connection. In the long term, this behavior can cause relationships to fall apart. In this Authentic Relating workshop, we’ll explore how unintentional gaslighting shows up in everyday communication — and more importantly, what to say instead. Through embodied exercises, real-time relational games, and guided practice, you’ll learn how to: * Recognize subtle invalidation patterns * Stay regulated when someone’s emotions feel intense * Respond with empathy without abandoning your own truth * Repair when harm has already happened This is a space for growth, not blame — for learning how to create connection instead of confusion. Come practice turning defensiveness into curiosity and disconnection into understanding. **Who would benefit from this practice:** partners, family members, those who want help connecting with others (friendships), professionals who have trouble working with team members, and team leaders who are trying to make an impact. **About the instructor:** Mike is a certified Authentic Relating facilitator, trained through ART International, with ongoing training in Nonviolent Communication, and other heart-centered communication modalities. He is passionate about creating spaces where people can slow down, connect deeply, and experience meaningful connection. Mike facilitates Authentic Relating exercises with the intention of making a real and lasting impact in people’s lives. There is no mana exchange but donations are appreciated.

Contra dance March 21 (First Unitarian Universalist Church) note new time!
# **Band and caller TBA** Beginner lesson at 1:30, regular dancing begins at 2:00 pm NOTE THAT WE ARE TEMPORARILY DANCING IN THE AFTERNOON INSTEAD OF EVENING. Dance with us in the afternoon then you can still go out in the evening! **Sponsor: All Soles Contra and Square Dancing, First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd., Columbus OH 43214** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as ā€œPride and Prejudiceā€, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like ā€œswing your partnerā€ and ā€œdo-si-do,ā€ like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alĆ” ā€œRiverdance.ā€ Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 1:30 - 2:00, followed by dancing 2:00 - 430. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. Please bring your own refillable water bottle.
