**KEY PROJECT: MODERN FOAM with DEEP BUTTONED CONSTRUCTION FOOTSTOOL**
*All of our upholstery classes are for absolute beginners. It doesnât matter which one you choose to take first. Each technique that is offered is part of all the processes that every upholsterer has to learn.*
We have created a wonderful project to learn the classic form of deep buttoned upholstery â but made with a time-saving modern method using sheet foam.
Banish those fuddy-duddy club chair ideas and say hello to upholstery with a new twist; bright colours, shiny fabrics and funky feet.
One of the modules that professional upholsterers are examined on is the process of deep buttoning. The correct height of foam is selected and applied to a base. Holes are made in the base and foam. We have a traditional button press you will use to make your own buttons in whatever fabric you choose, in the same fabric as your footstool or bring 10cm of a contrasting colour. The top fabric is then folded and pleated and the button is knotted to hold the folds together. It is fitted with âCabrioleâ legs to complete the project.
You will learn enough know-how to take away a skill to make your own headboard, banquette (I love that word) or anything else you can imagine. Itâs easier than it looks and comes together in such a satisfying way.
The dimensions for our footstool are 540mm x 360mm and we have allowed enough time and materials to make 9 deep buttoned holes. This size is about the smallest unit possible to learn the process of deep buttoning as an upholstery technique.
We provide everything for the workshop, from the wood frame to the set of natural beech wood legs that are included for you to paint or stain as you wish. We will give you guidance if you want to know different techniques for the wood.
Bring about a metre by a metre of fabric of your own, or use one of our luxurious upholstery fabrics at the centre. The use of all tools and materials is included. We also have a selection of tools and materials that we use in our workshops for sale at The Goodlife Centre for you to continue your new hobby at home.

DIY IN A DAY â DRILLS
**Bookable via our website âĄď¸** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/diy-in-a-day-drills-350/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/diy-in-a-day-drills-350/)
**âââ**
Learn the basics at this fast-paced but relaxed one-day workshop.
A perfect starter for all those annoying jobs around the house that you feel you should be able to tackleâŚif only you knew how. We know itâs frustrating to wait for it to be done and then get charged for it and we understand it can be a bit daunting to head into a wall with a power drill.
Pick up the skills to hang curtains, blinds, and simple shelves on any wall. Learn to drill into wood, brick, tiles, or hollow walls with confidence. We will show you how to judge what is behind the walls before you drill.
An enjoyable â hands-onâ one-day workshop that covers many of the common aspects of basic DIY. If you have just bought your home and have realized it didnât include a landlord to fix stuff, or just donât want to rely on someone else, this day is for you. There is plenty of time to practice on several exercises over the day.
The workshop also covers hanging pictures and heavier objects like mirrors, cupboards, and flat-screen TVs. You will learn how to hang a hook, fix a baton, and then a pair of level shelf brackets.
Finish off the day learning how to fit shelves into awkward alcoves â a handy skill you can use to fit work surfaces too. Learn how to select the correct drill bit, wall fixing, and screw to secure things confidently. The day will also include a chance to fill small and medium holes in wood and walls to prepare your surfaces for painting.
Along the way, we show you how to remove old wall fixings and what to do with the ones you canât. This a fun fast day with plenty of tools to try and lots of advice on which tools to have in a basic toolkit. If you are thinking of upgrading your drill, you can test all of the ones we use and feel more knowledgeable about what you want to buy.
This course is especially suitable if you are not handy or if you are able, but not that confident, about tackling small but important tasks in your home. We will also suggest how to tell if a task is appropriate for DIY or GSI (Get Someone In).
You will take home a set of skills that will last a lifetime.
All tools and materials included. Perfect for beginners.

**âââ**
Ideal for everyone with a hankering to âmakeâ rather than âassembleâ something in wood with traditional hand tools. This one-day workshop is a great introduction if you lack time or commitment to take a longer course.
In this safe and friendly workshop, you will learn how to plan your work, where, and how to buy suitable wood for use in making simple projects at home. You will use the tools you will need to build a basic kit and the day includes a demonstration on keeping your tools sharp.
Using easy-to-follow directions in this âhands-onâ practical day, you will learn how to measure and cut accurately, how to use a chisel to make a classic wood joint and how to use a plane to make your wood smooth. You will drill the holes to glue and screw your work together.
Everyone works with a complete set of tools and makes their own project, under the guidance of an experienced tutor.
During the day you will make two âgallows styleâ brackets and attach them with wood-plugged screws to a 50cm shelf. This is fitted with simple hardware to hang and display your work.
This workshop is suitable for all ages. Small class size = plenty of attention. For those aged between 10 and 18, an older guardian can accompany them on the course if required. Please contact us if you intend to do this.
If you enjoy the peace that comes with traditional skills, this day can build into a lifelong pastime. This workshop always sells out fast.
All personal protection and use of tools and materials are included.
MAKE A PIPED CUSHION
**Bookable via our website âĄď¸** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/make-a-piped-cushion-61/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/make-a-piped-cushion-61/)
**âââ**
For everyone who would love to make their own cushions for seats and sofas. The perfect way to fit out your camper van or jazz up your shed.
Whether itâs a square scatter cushion or an elegant piped boxed cushion, learn the process in our one-day weekend workshop. If you are not confident with a sewing machine, we suggest you make the square scatter cushion.
During the day you will be able to sew your creation to make either a 40cm piped, square cushion or a square 3â deep 35cm piped boxed cushion to take home.
An expert upholsterer will guide you through the process of cushion-making to ensure a crisp fitted result. Master the techniques of measuring, marking and cutting accurately to maximise fabric use and how to pattern match.
Learn how to make piping using bias-cut strips and piping cords. We will also show you how to fit a zip along one side so you can take your cover off for washing.
All materials (including hypoallergenic cushion pad or foam pad) are provided and you will be able to choose your fabric from a small selection we have at the centre. You may bring a metre of your own soft furnishing fabric if you choose. Please make sure to avoid velvets, stretch or satin as these are more suitable to an advanced learner. A linen-weight fabric is ideal.
We have well-maintained domestic Janome and Bernina machines to learn on. These workshops are kept to a small number and everyone has a dedicated machine.
If you would like to build up confidence with a sewing machine first, we suggest our one-day â[Intro to Machine Sewing](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/intro-machine-sewing/)â workshop.
Book early to ensure your space.

HOLBORN BY ZOOX*
(pictured: the south elevation of the British Museum: the sculptures in the pediment represent 'the progress of civilisation')
If, after they start on Londonâs streets this September, you book an autonomous âZoox, and say, 'Holborn', the chances are you'll be taken to the tube station, at Kingsway.
On this walk we're going to learn about robotic taxis, buses, and delivery vehicles, where theyâre operating, and how they could change the public realm, in Holborn, the first local area to expand outside the City of London, now densely populated with pedestrians, lorries and bikes.
In the 1900âs, Holborn was the smallest of the Metropolitan Boroughs, but had a population density of 30K people per km2, twice that of the current most densely populated borough, Tower Hamlets.
Plus, as we walk the 2 km, clear across the diminutive borough, from Farringdon to Tottenham Court Road, weâll see how London local administration started, before maps, from areas defined only by posts, based on churches (vestries, parishes and single-purpose district boards) to Metropolitan Boroughs, and todayâs London Boroughs, an ongoing process of amalgamation leading to larger units, following a falling population, and sometimes leading to mismatched places.
For example, the location of âHolbornâ, like the constantly-shifting magnetic North Pole, has wandered, as the area it administered grew, now over a mile west from the lower River Fleet, then known as âThe Holbournâ, where it was first used.
After the Metropolitan Borough was created in 1900, its Town Hall, Offices, Post Office, Library and Swimming Pool were even further west, and not even in one of the several Holborn church-based parishes.
Weâll meet at Farringdon Station and start at the site of the Holbourn Bridge, a crossing the open ditch that flowed into the Thames 700m to the south.
The path of the ancient âHolbourn Hillâ, which climbed the west side of the valley, is now occupied by the modern âViaductâ.
Both arrived at the parish church of âSt Andrew Holbornâ, on this site since the 1200âs, rebuilt by Wren in 1690, his largest, gutted in WW2 and repaired in 1960.
For centuries, this local Church of England was the basis of local administration, which mostly consisted of regulating sanitation and hygiene, and the relief of the poor.
After Holborn Circus comes the street called âHolbornâ, broad and still climbing, but only 250m long, bringing us to the old site of the Holborn âBarâ, the boundary of the City of London, at Grayâs Inn Road, still marked by 2 City Dragons, and the highest point in the City of London.
Then âHighâ Holborn, sometimes described as âsterileâ and âa desertâ, now lined with unoccupied office buildings, but showing glimpses on both sides of the swathe of lawyersâ precincts, which extend down to the Thames.
Our âZooxâ drops us near Kingsway, then it, and we, calmly and safely, use the âPedestrian Scrambleâ (aka: âall-wayâ or a âBarnes Danceâ) crossing.
As we do, we leave the last vestige of the influence of the original parish of St Andrew.
From this point we are in Bloomsbury, and yet here is the original Borough Public Library (originally called 'St Giles') , later extended in 1908 to form a Town Hall for the new Metropolitan Borough, and the Oasis Sports Centre, opened as the âBloomsbury Baths and Washhouses in 1852, and rebuilt and reopened in 1902 as the âHolborn Bathsâ.
London being a treasure storehouse, there are masterpieces we must see in passing:
¡ the hardly-ever-looked-at north elevation of Sir John Soaneâs over-touristed House and Museum
¡ a surprise as it suddenly jumps out in narrow Great Russell Street, the south elevation of Robert Smirkeâs 1842-7 British Museum: âthe Erechtheion recreatedâ\*. Still amazing that we have, right here in Holborn, an almost exact copy of a temple from the Acropolis.
¡ St George, Bloomsbury Way, (1716-31), â the most grandiose of Londonâs 18th Century church frontsâ\*\*, and Hawksmoorâs last building, has a hidden-away tower which was originally the entrance.
¡ a âmasterpieceâ, but of planning policy: the Roof Garden of the Post Building, from which we may see all of Holborn\*\*\*
¡ Central St Giles, by Renzo Piano, which surrounds an achingly minimal central space, whose purity seems to be a psychic remembrance of unspeakably awful, impenetrable ârookeryâ(=slum), which occupied the site until deliberately eliminated by new road schemes in the 1840âs.
¡ now edging, by ageing, into masterpiece status, Richard Seifertâs Centre Point, said to have been designed by one of his associates.
The walk will end at the worldâs very first âPizza Expressâ at 10 Dean Street W1D 3RW.
\* Amazonâs autonomous taxi brand. Launch date as currently expected. The taxi could also be an Uber âWayveâ, or an Alphabet âWaymoâ.

**Abstract**
*Customize the IDE: Building Extensions for Visual Studio Code*
Visual Studio Code is one of the most widely used development environments today, and much of its flexibility comes from its extension ecosystem. Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs.
In this session, weâll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. Weâll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling.
The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. Weâll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options.

Take Control Of Your Life, Freedom From Negative Thoughts & Irrational Emotions
Feeling down? Sometimes depressed? Can't focus? Negativity & stress? Recent losses? Creativity in career and personal life hindered by mental blocks? Sometimes we never fully recover from traumatic experiences.
Whether it was yesterday, last week or a year ago, traumatic experiences - a loss of a loved one, losing a job, a breakup - can leave you scarred. You talk about it and feel a little better, but it never goes away. After you hang up the phone, it's still there; the sadness, the cloud, the over-thinking, the worry, the guilt. You try to focus, but you're blocked. You try to look forward into new experiences, new relationships but a cloud is hanging over you, casting a shadow on what you once considered a bright, cheerful future.
What happened to your courage? Your strength of character? You're 'why not' attitude? Whoever said 'time heals' must have had a special time machine, because after weeks, months, years, you're wondering - when exactly does that kick in? Sometimes it seems like drinking or drugs are the way to go. But they wear off, and now the problem is still there with added side effects from the drugs.
At this free local Meetup event we will talk about:
* What causes grief, anxiety and depression to become chronic.
* Is it possible to regain your joy and happiness even after traumatic experiences?
* How to break away from negativity and focus on the future
* What are the steps to take to get control of your mind and your emotions?
Learn about a safe, gentle, do-it-yourself counseling that can be done in the comfort of your own home.
Let's explore safe, effective solutions for healing from traumatic experiences.
