In this special Sun/Star Edition of SODAI – Straw, Form and Wind, we will create a radiant ornament inspired by one of the oldest and most enduring symbols in Baltic folk culture: the sun. Crafted from simple natural straw, these luminous forms have long been associated with light, vitality, protection, abundance, and the ever-turning cycle of life. Though distinct from the hanging geometry of traditional Sodai, the straw sun shares the same quiet beauty, symbolism, and connection to nature that have made straw craftsmanship a cherished tradition for generations. In this workshop, we will learn how to prepare, shape, and assemble straw into a delicate sun or star form. Piece by piece, individual elements come together in harmonious balance, transforming humble natural materials into an ornament that feels both timeless and radiant. As your hands work with the straw, you will discover how repetition, attention, and patience can turn simple actions into a meditative and deeply rewarding creative process.
