Persuading With Evidence - Debate Workshop
Learn how to prepare a quality speech, presentation or argument in 20 minutes! From one of London's leading Debate Coaches.
In this 4.5 hour Masterclass we will be exploring: the tactics used before the speech. What to include, what to leave out, and what order to say it all in! Especially, when you are preparing to give a talk or a speech without much time to really prepare.
Key Skills we will be covering:
* Stakeholder analysis & evidence (what sort of arguments can you build?)
* How to build an argument
* The basics of narrative building
This workshop for debaters and speakers of all skill ranges will introduce you to stakeholder analysis and balancing. A core aspect of effective debate preparation and argumentation. This is a key debate preparation skill that can be applied to any form of persuasive communication from the board room to presentations and, of course, debating!
**[Our Coaches](https://www.debate.london/coaches "https://www.debate.london/coaches")**
Debate London's Coaching team brings together 6 of the greatest debaters from across the UK and the USA with a combined experience of over a century in debating. Practical Philosophy Meetup - London š¬š§
**šļø WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?**
Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no āofficialā philosophy knowledge required! š
Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic.
The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community š
š **HOW DOES IT WORK?**
Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ja2H9lXYtWX8RdCKHw6qNK), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going.
When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, itās important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture.
**General Meeting Agenda**
Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline:
* 13:45-14:00 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the āofficial' start.
* 14:00-14:05 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines.
* 14:05-14:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ājump-offā questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. Itās not obligatory to answer them.
* 14:45 - We do a group conclusion of the things we discussed, and then we typically take a photo and go on our way :) If you don't want to be in the group photo, there's no pressure, it's just a way to close out the meeting. We occasionally have an unofficial social so the different groups can mingle afterwards too!
**š§§PRICING?**
Practical Philosophy Club is FREE to attend, and we operate on donations.
If you'd like to donate to support our running costs, that helps keep our group self-sustaining. Donations are 100% voluntary, but your contribution is appreciated! QR codes to donate will be present.
Teaās and coffees and are paid by the individual should they wish to have them.
**š WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY**
š£ āI feel like Philosophy Club helps someone build their own belief system through a series of perspectives while not promoting whatās right and wrongā - Ekam
š£ āI got hooked from day 1 (the topic was authority) and felt it was the right place for me. I feel it is a place where people can go to learn and discuss new perspectives and increase critical thinking and community by interacting with people who might challenge your point of views but at the same time encourage you to have openness and mind flexibility.ā - Daniel
**š¤ FAQ**
* What will we talk about? What's the topic?
The topic for the week is shared every week in the Whatsapp group before the session. We try to add the topic to the comment section on this event page as well but if you donāt see it, the topic and the jump-off points will be in our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ja2H9lXYtWX8RdCKHw6qNK).
* Do I need to study or read anything to attend?
No preparation is necessary. This isnāt a study of other thinkers. We want to know what YOU think about the topic, not what an old philosopher thought. If you have a perspective from a religion or a school of thought to share, throw it on the table and weāll discuss it, but it's not required.
* Is there a specific philosophy that Practical Philosophy is focused on?
The goal of our meet-ups is to not have dogmatic discussions, and flex our critical thinking muscles. Because of this, we want to hear from every realm of thought, and don't study a particular school.
* Is it mostly men that attend?
Surprisingly, no! Although philosophy is seen as a Candelabra affair in a dark room with a bunch of guys, our Practical Philosophy meetups are generally 50/50 between genders, and we donāt meet in any dark rooms.
* Can I come alone?
Of course you can, we encourage it :)
* Can I be late?
Please don't be! We do have a 15 minute grace period where we allow people to funnel in while we hang out, but after that if you arrive too late, it disrupts the flow of the conversation.
* Where do you meet?
The location is posted in Meetup and our [Whatsapp](https://chat.whatsapp.com/Ja2H9lXYtWX8RdCKHw6qNK) group for this location. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you join the Whatsapp group! If you want to know what other cities have a Practical Philosophy Club, you can see our chapters on our [website](https://www.practicalphilosophy.club/practical-philosophy-locations/).
š¤**POLICY**
To respect our members privacy, we ask that no one privately message a member without first getting explicit consent. (This looks like speaking in person and being asked to message privately.) Contacting or texting other participants without prior consent is not permitted and may result in removal from the group. Practical Philosophy reserves the right to enforce this policy at its discretion to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
**PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY - Making Philosophy Available To All.** āØ

OLD OAK PARK ROYAL
(pictured: the Overground tracks crossing the Grand Union Canal, officially the 'Kew Curve Grand Canal Bridge'. Behind, on L, in Victoria Road, is Nash House, now 'The Collective Old Oak' co-living project)
Around a new station, to be called 'Old Oak Common', where HS2, the GWR main line and the Elizabeth Line will interchange, is planned a new extension of London, called Old Oak Park Royal.
They're saying it'll be the 'Canary Wharf of the West'!
It's got a canal running through it, the Grand Union, remarkably unchanged since its opening in 1801, and an extraordinary number of railway lines.
Starting in the 1920's Park Royal became the UK's largest area of industrial estates: distribution depots, sorting offices, factories, warehouses and breweries, at London's doorstep for goods to and from Bristol, Liverpool and Manchester.
On 27th January this year, Karen and Madeline\*, hero TBM's\*\* of the Elizabeth Line campaign, set off on a new 7 km journey, from the underground 'box' in the future interchange, toward Euston in Central London.
The extension will upgrade and diversify the area. Let's see it before that happens.
We'll meet at noon on Saturday April 11th at Willesden Junction Station, and see the area once intended to be 'Old Oak North'\*\*\*, then along the Grand Union Canal to 'The Collective' co-housing development, and Old Oak Common Lane, passing the HS2 station box, into Wormwood Scrubs, seeing the LCC's Old Oak Estate, past the eponymous Prison, then the LCC's White City Estate ('where their chickens came home to roost', architecturally speaking), QPR's stadium, and so to 'The Hoxton Hotel' at Shepherd's Bush, where our table will be waiting!
Hope you can come!

#1 - the UX of nature
**Meet likeminded UX professionals and discuss ways to use design to reduce burnout.**
ā**The Problem:** With stress and burnout on the rise, how can we use design to help Londoners "switch off" and reconnect with nature?
āFor our first **design impact lab** session, weāll be using the Japanese practice of *Shinrin-yoku* (forest bathing) as a lens to discuss how simple interventions can help us reconnect with nature to reduce stress & burnout.
ā**The Flow (Sunday 12th April 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM):**
* ā**10:00 \| Coffee & Intros \(WatchHouse\, Hanover\):** Weāll meet for coffee to kick things off. You'll meet other attendees and discuss the problem space.
* ā**10:30 \| Observation Walk:** A 15-minute mini fieldwork walk to Hyde Park. You'll observe how the environment changes from a busy urban centre to the park and how this impacts how you feel.
* ā**11:00 \| Shinrinyoku & Brainstorming:** Once we find a quiet spot, weāll dive into the world of *Shinrin-yoku*. Weāll discuss how nature can boost wellbeing and brainstorm "micro-interventions" - simple design ideas (digital or physical) that could encourage more people in London to engage with nature to reduce stress & burnout.
* ā**12:00 \| Closing & Optional Lunch:** We'll wrap up our discussions and those who have time can go for a casual lunch or picnic in the park.
***
ā**Pre-Event Mission:**
āYour mission is to bring **one photo on your phone** of a natural spot that made you feel good recently. It can be a park, a window box, or even a stubborn weed in the pavement. Weāll share these over coffee to explore the different ways in which nature impacts our day to day experiences.
***
ā**The Details:**
* ā**Meeting Point:** WatchHouse, Hanover (Oxford Circus).
* ā**Capacity:** Weāre keeping this to a small group to ensure everyone can connect and contribute. Please ensure your RSVP is up to date and let us know if you're unable to attend.
* ā**Vibe:** Friendly and relaxed! No laptops, just notebooks and fresh air.
***
ā**Why Join?**
āIf youāre a designer or researcher who wants to use your skills for more than just "conversion," come say hi.
āItās a chance to meet like-minded people, learn about forest bathing and brainstorm design solutions to a universal problem.
āIt's also our very first event, and I would love to hear everyone's thoughts and feedback to improve.
ā**Who is this for?**
āOur events are for UX designers, researchers and other strategic and creative thinkers who are passionate about using their skills for social good, not just profit.
ā**Who is the host?**
āHi! š I'm Max - a London based design researcher. Until recently I was based in Tokyo, where I ran a small design agency and spent over 10 years as a meetup organizer. I'm exploring ways to bring designers together to use our skills to work on meaningful problems. If that sounds like something you're interested in, I'd love to have you join!
\*This event is being advertised on multiple sites, so the actual number of attendees will be different to what appears on meetup.

LCC Nature Walks: THE GREENWAY [East London]
Hello path-beaters and foot-padders! Once again it's that time again: Spring is in the air, or at least it will be (have been?) by the time we touch down in east London for another big step down **The Greenway on April 12th, 2026.**
It was with this hidden gem of an urban nature trail that we kicked off last year's smash-hit nature walking series. Longtime LCC-ers will remember that we didn't actually get very far down the Greenway, thanks to the torturous interference of some no-good developers who put a big fence and a "GREENWAY CLOSED" sign in our way. We diverted and had a lovely hike anyway, but this time we'll be ready.
The Greenway was once known as the Northern Outfall Sewer, a raised sewer line designed to whisk away the industrial filth of London during the height of the Industrial Revolution. At the start of the 20th century, it was sealed up and turned into a linear park for the enjoyment of working-class east London, over which it passes today - from Fish Island all the way over East Ham and on down to Silvertown and the end of the Woolwich Peninsula. We'll try to cover the whole distance, for a walk of about 3-3.5 hours.
The weather should be alright - who can say - but do bring a wind layer and possibly some protection from light rains. Good walking shoes and boots are handy, but this trail shouldn't have much or any mud, since it's paved in quite a few places. A snack or lunch is worth bringing too, but we'll aim for a pub at the end somewhere.
There are bathroom facilities at Hackney Wick, our starting point, as well as at a couple cafes at situated on the eastern end of the route.
Along the way we'll see gorgeous views of the River Lea with its branches, canal sections and forests as well as the Olympic parklands of Hackney and Stratford. To top that off, we'll have a near birds-eye view of the changing human landscape with all the big fuck-off construction sites of Bow Goods Yard, Sweetwater, Pudding Mill etc - a veritable tour of the gentrification process as it rolls on in east London! Natural beauty and political-economic field research - a winning combination, so do join us. Take care and see you on the trail!
HSP Gathering
We will meet for relaxed conversation, gentle connection, and mutual support.
Thereās no pressure, just a warm, welcoming atmosphere where you can be yourself and connect with others who understand the depth, empathy, and sensitivity of this trait.
Join us to meet like-minded people, feel validated, and enjoy a grounding, nourishing space.

Prompt vs. Paintbrush
AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machineās?
This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation?
We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee.

**Abstract**
GitHub Copilot is powerful, but what if you could scale from a solo AI assistant to an entire team of specialized agents working in parallel? This session introduces Squad: an open-source framework for multi-agent orchestration that lets you define teams of AI agents with specific roles, responsibilities, and expertise.
We'll progress from Copilot basics to the Copilot CLI, explore how Agents add autonomy, and see how Instructions and Skills let you customize agent behavior. Then, the climax: a live demo where a Squad team of 3 agents (Lead, Developer, Tester) stands up and builds a working application in real-time, showcasing true multi-agent collaboration.
Whether you're new to AI or exploring how to scale your use of Copilot, this session will show you what's possible when agents work as a team.

Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
