Canoe Foundations Clinic
**Please note the only way to register for this adventure is on [our website.](https://www.wildernessunion.com/adventures/canoe-clinic)**
***Join us for this essential course as we break down the foundations of wilderness canoeing!***
We are heading north to help you build up the necessary skills for your summer adventures. This isn't a rigid certification course but a practical, hands-on clinic led by our two master paddler guides, Rory & Zac. They will share their breadth of knowledge gathered over many years of paddling to help you feel confident and prepared on the water.
In this course you will learn:
* Fundamentals of canoeing safely and effectively
* Bowing & sterning
* Paddle strokes & techniques (including the J stroke!)
* Capsizing & righting a canoe
**Who is this course for?:** It is a day designed for anyone who wants to stop fighting the wind and start *gliding through the wilderness* with ease.
If you have never held a paddle before and want to start with the right habits, then this clinic is for you. If you have some experience but want to refine your technical skills for longer trips, then our guides can help you dial in your form. We provide the canoes, paddles, and safety gear so you can just focus on the rhythm of the water.
**Interested in joining this year’s Epics? Completing this and other relevant courses will support your approval process for advanced adventures.**
**Included:** Rentals for the canoes, paddles & life preservers.
**Who It’s For**: Beginner and intermediate paddlers who want to develop and hone their skills, as well as practice real-world simulations of emergency situations.
**Highlights**
**Outdoors Skills Training:** Develop essential skills to survive and thrive in the wild.
**Expert Instructors:** Our amazing expert guides will teach you everything you need to know in a safe and fun way.
**Backcountry Readiness:** These skills are the building blocks for every major wilderness expedition we run. Mastering these basics ensures you are ready to tackle vast, untouched lakes and winding rivers on your next big trip.
**Event cost: $95+HST - $50 optional transport available.**

**About Wilderness Union**
Wilderness Union is deliberate about building an outdoors community that connects you to the life-changing magic of the outdoors and helps you find your people.
Members range from 20-40 years old. The group is a mix of GTA locals and newcomers to Toronto from within Canada and abroad.
Attendance numbers on Meetup don't reflect our actual event attendance - we typically have 15-20 community members at each event. Large enough that there's someone new to meet but small enough that it's not overwhelming!

Come solo or with a partner for an evening of connection, embodiment, and exploration. This workshop is designed for those who are curious about conscious intimacy, craving deeper connection, or simply wanting to try something new in a safe, welcoming space.
The path of Tantra is one of self-awareness, authenticity, and connection, using the body as a gateway to presence and aliveness.

* deepen connection with yourself
* experience authentic, mindful connection with others
* expand your comfort with intimacy in a grounded, respectful way
**This is a fully clothed, trauma-informed, consent-based space.**
All exercises are invitational, and you are always encouraged to honour your boundaries.
After the workshop, join us in our social lounge to enjoy light refreshments, great food, and meaningful conversation.

COUNT RMH Housewarmer Volunteering (Ronald McDonald House)
Some trained COUNT volunteers work together once a month at RMH (http://www.rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer.php) as Housewarmers (usually on the 1st Sunday from 1 – 5 PM). Some schedule other shifts at their convenience. You may try this out with less fuss by following a "Fast track" or go through the normal process.
Fast track
• Arrange a time to shadow a COUNT volunteer. Call Dave Nohle at 614-268-9558 (cell).
• Show up and try it out.
• Complete application, etc. later.
Normal process
• Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/).
• Attend orientation in advance.
• At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility.
• Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM.
• Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895).
The Ronald McDonald House (RMH) provides housing and meals for families with sick children. The Columbus RMH is the largest in the world with 137 rooms. COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014.
Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk. RMH Housewarmers volunteer at least one four-hour shift a month. All Housewarmers must complete an application and agree to a background check before they can be full fledged volunteers.
