Hands-on Lab: Getting started with OpenTelemetry
**BRING YOUR COMPUTERS TO THIS EVENT! And check out the prerequisites below.**
Join us for the first hands-on lab session, snacks, and discussion! This time around instead of talks we are going to run a free hands-on lab on how to get started with OpenTelemetry.
We'll teach you how to run your own local observability stack and how to capture telemetry from the host all the way to the application layer.
**Repository**
https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
**Prerequisites**
* Git
* Docker and Docker Compose — or Podman with the `docker compose` CLI, see [PODMAN.md](https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation/blob/main/PODMAN.md) for setup
Pull all Docker images at home before the session to avoid slow WiFi at the event:
git clone https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
cd grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation
docker compose pull
docker compose up --build
The first build downloads images and compiles both services — it can take several minutes. Once images are cached, rebuilds are fast. See [TROUBLESHOOTING.md](https://github.com/grafana/grafanacon2026-opentelemetry-instrumentation/blob/main/TROUBLESHOOTING.md) in the repository if you hit issues.
**Again special thanks to Nokia and Mark Prosser for hosting us at their downtown office.**

6:15-7:40 PM: Hands-On Lab
7:40-8:00 PM: Q&A, networking and wrap up
**Facilitators:** Nikola Grcevski and Marylia Gutierrez

Midnight Martial Arts Presents: Jab–Cross!!!
## **Beginner Boxing Fundamentals**
Midnight Martial Arts starts at midnight — so we’re meeting under the city lights for a late-night beginner boxing fundamentals session, under the lights of **Mel Lastman Square**.
This first, very much **weather-dependent** meetup, is a simple, non-contact deep dive into one of the most important combinations in striking: **the jab–cross**.
Whether you stand square, bladed, orthodox, southpaw, or you’re still figuring that out, we’ll break down the basics together: stance, guard, footwork, rhythm, balance, distance, and how the jab and cross work across different striking styles.
### **Why Mel Lastman Square at midnight?**
Yeah, fair question. Since this is the very first event, I genuinely don't know if anyone will show up or ten. And honestly, even if I booked a world-class facility (Which would be kind of hard because most of them are closed), I'm not sure that would change the turnout for a first meetup.
So for now I'm keeping it simple, free, and low-commitment — an open, well-lit public space where anyone who's curious can sign up and we can see if this thing has legs. If there's interest, finding a proper venue is the natural next step.
### **What this is not**
This is not sparring. This is not a fight club. This is a relaxed, beginner-friendly technique lab for night owls, martial arts nerds, and curious people who want to move, learn, and talk technique in a low-pressure environment.
### **What we’ll cover**
Basic boxing stance and guard
How to throw a clean jab
How to throw a clean cross
How the jab and cross connect together
Footwork, weight shift, rhythm, and distance
Orthodox vs. southpaw basics
A few style variations and discussion points
### **Got a martial arts rabbit hole you want to explore?**
Bring it in. If there’s a specific boxing style, technique, or idea that connects to the jab–cross, feel free to share it during the session so we can work it into the discussion.
A short video, a clear question, or a few notes can go a long way.
If it’s about another area of martial arts like grappling, kicking, clinch, or anything outside the main theme.
That’s welcome too, but we’ll try to save those bigger side quests for the end so we can keep the main session focused.
I’m always happy to get into the weeds about these things, but I’m not an expert in every corner of martial arts, so a little context helps a lot; You might teach me something, and I'm here to learn too.
**Time:** 12:30 a.m. – 2:30 a.m.
**Location:** Mel Lastman Square
**Safety and well-being are the are number one priority!!!**

Mob Programming at Mofer Coffee
Let’s do some coding together at a cafe! No more working alone in the weekend. Here, we write code together. And I mean together together. Not occupying-the-same-space-but-separate together.
Here’s how it works: Jennifer brings her mobile app project, tells everyone that it is like Pinterest for recipes and she’d like to work on the nav bar. Paul and Chloe think Jennifer's project is fascinating, and they join the group. They gather around Jennifer’s laptop and work on the nav bar for 2 hours. Jennifer is the one typing out the code while Paul and Chloe research, brainstorm, and offer suggestions.
If you’re feeling stuck on your own project or need a motivation boost, bring it to mob programming!
Want to learn by watching how others code and solve problems? Join someone else’s project at this event!
Oh and we love your half-done projects that you are a bit embarrassed to share. Absolutely bring those to the event!
**Discord**:
We use Discord to share screen & code snippets during the event. Also feel free to share your projects here before the event!
https://discord.gg/xwjDdVSw3E
**Event policy**:
* We have 0 tolerance for harassment.
* We don’t allow the projects that are not meant to be shared in public such as school assignments, interview tasks, or trade secrets.
* The goal is to write code. We discourage you from pitching business ideas here, doing code reviews, or spending the whole event on planning what to do.
* Please buy a drink, and tip the barista well.

(Cross-Posting) From Joints to Gestures: Reading Hands in Unity
Do **NOT** sign up to this one and sign-up at https://www.meetup.com/columbusjs/events/313386504/
=======================================
A hand tracker gives you joints, not a gesture.
This talk shows how you get from raw joints to a "thumbs-up" in Unity: the pipeline that cleans up the data, how a gesture becomes a few 0-to-1 values within tolerance, and why orientation matters as much as finger shape.
Includes a live demo of tuning gesture thresholds.
Food and drinks will be available.

Site Building with Etch (Class 04 of 10) (FEE BASED)
**PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING IMPORTANT NOTES:**
1. The dates for this series are simply placeholders at the moment. We are working on our 2026 schedule, and adjustments are forthcoming.
2. Each class in this series has an attendance fee.
3. Each class, from BOTH a sign-up and fee perspective, is a separate entity.
4. As the Etch toolset evolves, so too will the class outline below.
**Introduction:**
Our Site Building with Etch class provides detailed instructions on the philosophy of the Etch development framework, as well as in-depth, hands-on instruction on using the Etch environment and associated tools. Anyone familiar with Kevin Geary and the Digital Gravy set of products will tell you that they offer ground-breaking approaches to professional WordPress site development.
As we write this, the Etch toolset and environment are rapidly taking shape, with weekly quantum leaps forward in WordPress development methodologies. As early investors in the Etch product offering and its development process, we are actively testing and evaluating the toolset as it takes shape. We are beyond excited to see how WordPress site development is being modernized, and can't wait to bring this course set to you. It will be a paradigm shift in page and site development within WordPress, as well as moving your development mindset light-years forward.
Join us as we explore Etch and dive deep into development approaches that will genuinely elevate your craft as a website developer and agency provider. Scalable, responsive, compliant websites are now within easy reach, and Etch provides both the platform and toolset to take you there.
