Building AI for Travel: Strategy, Systems & Agents
**Complementary lessons from internal productivity to customer-facing AI**
AI is transforming the travel industry, but turning ideas into reliable, measurable systems in production remains hard. In this meetup, engineers and leaders from BlaBlaCar and AMEX GBT Egencia will share practical lessons on how they structure AI efforts, ship real systems, and operationalize agentic workflows—from internal platforms to customer-facing travel products.
While both companies tackle similar challenges, they’ll share perspectives from different starting points:
* **BlaBlaCar** will discuss its focus on **internal productivity and developer enablement**.
* **AMEX GBT Egencia** will share learnings from building **customer-facing, knowledge-grounded GenAI agents**.
Together, we’ll cover:
* how AI initiatives are structured and measured for impact,
* how agentic AI is used for both internal productivity and external user experiences,
* what it takes to evaluate, orchestrate, and operate agents reliably in production.
Expect concrete examples, honest trade-offs, and shared lessons from teams approaching similar problems from different angles.
**Format (Hybrid)**
This will be a **hybrid meetup**. If you’re around the Paris area, we strongly encourage you to join in person for discussions, networking, and pizza. Remote attendance is also possible—**RSVP to receive the Zoom link.**
**Practical Information**

🕕 **Schedule**:
* 6:00 pm – Welcome & networking
* 6:30 pm – Talks start
* ± 9:00 pm – Pizza & drinks
**📍 Location:** AMEX GBT Egencia, 11 Chemin de Bretagne, 92130 Issy-les-Moulineaux (Agora conference room)
**🎯 Audience:** (ML) engineers, data scientists, AI enthusiasts, AI practitioners, leaders
**🗣️ Language:** English (questions welcome in English, French, and a few other languages)
👉 RSVP early — **in-person spots are limited.**
**Agenda & Talks**
**Part 1 — AI Strategy: Organizing for Impact**
**BlaBlaCar — Yannick HOFFSESS**
In the race to “AI-everything”, a lot of companies are burning cash on demos that never leave the lab. At BlaBlaCar, we took a different route: we are treating AI integration like our carpooling model — focused on efficiency and shared resources. In this talk I will go under the hood of BlaBlaCar AI strategy. This isn't about theoretical models. It is a blueprint of how we integrated AI in our practices. I’ll share our reality: the mindset that actually matters, the projects that delivered good ROI and the hurdles that are slowing down our journey.
**AMEX GBT Egencia — Bernard CHEA, Véronique BLIN-ROYER**
Great AI products don’t start with a model — they start with the fundamentals that make them reliable. We’ll share how we structured and evolved our AI initiatives to move from experimentation to sustained impact: building strong data and AI platform foundations, adapting our approach for GenAI without reinventing everything, and partnering closely with Product to define success criteria upfront. We’ll also cover the governance and prioritization choices that helped us — and the lessons from what slowed us down.
**Part 2 — Agentic AI: Internal and Customer-Facing Use Cases**
**BlaBlaCar — Mike BENOIT, Valentin FRIES**
In this talk, we’ll first break down our journey in enabling engineering teams with a tailor-made multi-agent ecosystem. How to create an orchestrator agent? Are they good at introspection? How to get the most out of your trusty IDE plugin? We’ll share how we moved beyond standard Copilot usage to significantly increase developer experience.
We’ll then demonstrate how agentic tools can be leveraged internally to lift operational bottlenecks, like solving the flakiness of external test systems, assisting customer support in investigating escalations, or optimizing the cost of profile picture moderation. We’ll showcase real-world implementations that directly improve our teams’ quality of life and share how we track the tools’ efficiency to provide measurable business value.
**AMEX GBT Egencia — Mohamed HAMHOUM, Riham MANSRI**
We’ll share a production-grounded journey of building customer-facing GenAI support, starting with a multilingual RAG-based FAQ system deployed in 10 languages. We’ll do a candid retro on what it really takes to keep a RAG experience healthy once it’s live: defining success criteria, putting the right guardrails in place, building an evaluation approach that works across languages, and maintaining quality over time through monitoring and iterative improvements—not just one-off demos.
We’ll then show how those learnings informed our move from Q&A to our first Flight Exchange AI agent in production. Using insights from real chat and live-agent sessions, we’ll explain why flight changes were the right next step, what changed when we introduced an agentic workflow, and how we scoped an initial v1 to deliver value safely while creating a feedback loop to expand capabilities.
**Speakers:**
**Bernard CHEA** is initially a full-stack software developer since 2005 and joined Egencia back in 2012, building the booking platform, then led the data platform and lastly the AI engineering and AI platform teams. His objective has always been to have a full end-to-end view on all aspects of the business to better serve our customers, asking the same to the teams he’s managing. Outside of work, he likes spending time with friends, a former bachata dancer – connecting to humans and not only computers.
**Mika BENOIT** works as a Software Engineer at BlaBlaCar since 2021. He joined the Booking squad, creating since then the backend serving the booking flow for all the buses and trains on the platform. During his free time, Mika likes to learn new maker skill, maintain a too complicated home automation setup and play Dungeon & Dragon.
**Mohamed HAMHOUM** is a Machine Learning Engineer at Amex GBT since 2024 passioned by GenAI. He has worked on turning structured search systems into intelligent, agent-driven assistants using RAG and Agentic architectures. He has also led efforts in evaluating and strengthening these systems, ensuring performance, stability, and reliability in high-stakes enterprise settings. Outside of AI, he's a big fan of board games and traveling, though he ironically forgets the names of most of the games he plays, despite being able to design agentic ai systems cross teams.
**Riham MANSRI** is a Machine Learning Engineer at Amex GBT, where she develops AI solutions and machine learning models across a range of use cases since her final year R&D internship back in 2022 at Egencia. She enjoys working with advanced ML technologies and applying them to real-world problems. Most recently, her work has centred on Generative AI, spanning the design and evaluation of RAG systems, agentic AI, and the use of A2A to improve agent-to-agent communication and coordination. Outside of work, Riham enjoys movies, especially horror and thrillers, has grown into an F1 fan over the past few years, and is an enthusiastic bootcamp workout devotee.
**Valentin FRIES** joined BlaBlaCar as a Senior Software Engineer in 2022 and worked since then on bootstrapping and evolving the Global Distribution System enabling train sales on the platform. Prior to that, he worked for multiple years as Software Engineer in the travel industry, in education, and infrastructure. During his free time, Valentin practices Taï Chi Chuan and likes to start new hobbies — woodworking, bass guitar — that he won't be able to invest in since he has a newborn child.
**Véronique BLIN-ROYER** has been working in product management for over 15 years. She started her journey when agile practices were beginning to take root — around 2012, when agile was becoming mainstream. Since then, she had the opportunity to work across different product development teams, from front-end to back-end, always refining her craft as a product leader. Product management has always been a passion for her: “not only do I practice it daily, but I also teach it in a business school and create internal training programs to help others grow in this discipline”. This background has shaped how I approach AI Product Management today — blending rigor, agility, and a deep curiosity for how AI can transform products.
**Yannick HOFFSESS** is the Head of Bus and Train Engineering at BlaBlaCar, a company he joined 4 years ago, bringing over 15 years of tech leadership experience from roles in the travel industry at Amadeus. Yannick balances his professional life with a passion for sports, van-life adventures with his family and needles.
Explorons nos richesses
**Pourquoi cet atelier ?**
* Le groupe comporte entre 4 et 10 personnes. Chaque séance dure environ 2 heures ;
* Les participant.e.s y travaillent alternativement par deux et en grand groupe ;
* Ils explorent leurs propres richesses selon différentes approches.
**Quels bénéfices pour les participants ?**
* Dans cet atelier, vous pourrez nommer vos richesses et vous en réjouir ;
* Puis les affirmer dans le monde social, et y vivre mieux.

Cosy Cave Conversations // 10ème // Café philo in English
**Step into the laid-back charm of Cosy Cave Conversations**, a Parisian philosophy chat that's more relaxed than a cat in a sunbeam 🐈 🌞 Gather with a bunch of easygoing souls, share thoughts on the good life and its mysteries, enjoy a beverage, and have a good laugh.
A few things to be aware of:
* **Please** **don't show up without a spot** (we aim to keep it cosy and we always have a waiting list these days — check if you’re on the list or the waiting list)
* If it's your first event, it's essential you **turn up early, or at the latest on time (<7pm)** so you understand how it works, what the topic is and don't interrupt the session
* The **session runs from 7pm to 8:30pm** where we focus on the discussion, but don't worry, you'll have a chance to socialise, introduce yourselves and continue the chat after the session.
**If you’re running late** (the curtains are closed), that’s okay, but please wait to join us in the break rather than interrupting the session.
* Please read the **tips below** for a good session before coming along
**How does it work?** We embrace the café-philo method — proposing intriguing topics on the night (up to 3), choosing one together, and diving into everything from consciousness, community, death and god, while managing to keep it light and easy 🦦
**Forget the stiff atmosphere**, we're all about small groups (\~10 people) and unpretentious chats with no homework required. No need for a philosophy degree, just bring your open mind and a dash of curiosity.
**Join us every Wednesday 19h-20h30 at Les Acolytes** — because pondering the profound is better with good company (and a pint). See you there! 🎉
A few tips for a great session:
* come with an **open and curious mind** 🧠
* **prioritise listening to others and asking questions** without interrupting or long monologues 👂
* we put a strong **emphasise on giving everyone a chance to contribute to the discussion**, so try and be aware of how much space and time you take up when speaking 🐻❄️
* we prioritise **intellectual accessibility**: this is not an academic group therefore we ask to keep any philosophy jargon to a minimum and instead explain any concepts in plain english 🤠
* we are an **apolitical group** that focuses on discussing and exploring philosophical ideas without endorsing or aligning with any specific political or religous ideologies. Our aim is to encourage open, unbiased dialogue centered on philosophical inquiry within a safe and respectful environment 🐥
Correction Moonrise Picnic Thurs Apr 2nd, 8:30-10 PM, Pont des Arts
**Ahoy there,**
**Next full moon picnic will be Thursday, April 2 from 8:30 PM until 10 PM.**
Sunset will be at 8 PM and moonrise around 9:30 PM.
April is known by American Indians for the Full Pink Moon or the Full Sprouting Grass Moon or the Egg Moon. Indian tribes on the coast called it the Full Fish Moon because that's when shad swam upstream to spawn. "Shad Swam Upstream to Spawn" is also the name of the first rock song by Sha Na Na before they became famous.
**WHAT**: Everyone brings food and drink to share.
**WHERE**: Pont des Arts. We'll gather around the 3rd bench from the Right Bank (Louvre) side of the bridge. Nearest metros: Pont Neuf and Louvre-Rivoli.
**WHEN**: Thursday April 2 from 8:30 pm - 10 pm
**WHY**: Share one of the most memorable sights in Paris with some of the nicest people around.
**WHO**: You and your friends.
**THEME**: April Fools +1
**HOW** to find us: Look for a group of English and French speaking "lunatics" standing around a bench near the center of the bridge. Look for a small white telescope on a tripod if the weather is good.
**BIRTHDAYS**: Are you an Aries? If so, let me know so we can celebrate your birthday this month and blow out the world’s largest birthday candle.
**WHAT DID YOU MISS LAST MONTH?**
On March 4th we were treated to a spectacular view of the moon thru the cupola atop the Theatre de Sarah Bernhardt at Place de Chatelet. Of course most of you missed it because you didn’t come to the picnic or you were too busy socializing to look through the telescope. A handful of us and quite a few passersby were thrilled to glimpse this view that only lasts for a couple of minutes.
In April, if my log notes are correct, we may get to see the Sainte Chapelle spire rooster standing on the moon. (Maybe Notre Dame rooster also?)
**PUZZLER**: Star clusters are groups of stars that share an origin, forming at roughly the same time and location, and are tied together by gravity for up to millions or even billions of years. A recent scientific publication on Solar and Stellar Astrophysics in the Acta Prima Aprilia Journal shows that 66 star clusters within 500 parsecs of our solar system are ALL pointed towards our sun, indicating that perhaps we are the center of the unverse after all. How can you explain this revolutionary discovery?
**PUZZLER ANSWER:**
The faulty answer, dear brutish reader, is not in our stars. But in ourselves. The answer ***lies*** in today's theme.
It turns out that the every year astronomers world-wide are invited to submit their research papers to be published in Acta Prima Aprilia (get it?).
Here are comments from a couple of peer reviews:
**Reviewer 1:** This work provides a clever analysis of open cluster structure which is well thought out and aptly summarized. The discovery of geomancy or feng shui in the universe itself is a triumph of anthropocentrism.
**Reviewer 2:** While I can find no flaws in the analysis or consideration of uncertainties in distance measurements, I am curious as to why the authors failed to cite prior groundbreaking work exploring our special place in the universe. I would hope to see specific citations such as *Ptolemy et al.* 150, *Tycho Brahe* 1588, and *The Catholic Church* 1616.
For this and other groundbreaking articles in Acta Prima Aprilia: [https://astrobites.org/2025/04/03/april-fools-2025/](https://astrobites.org/2025/04/03/april-fools-2025/)

While small talk, which is typically casual and light-hearted, can help break the ice, it may not necessarily help you form a deep, emotional connection with someone. Whether it's with your friends, family, colleagues or romantic partners, having meaningful conversations is important for creating strong bonds.
"Meaningful conversations help us understand ourselves and those around us better. They involve sharing important aspects of ourselves and actively listening, validating and connecting with others."
We believe that a happy and healthy life is built on beautiful relationships and that loneliness kills us. That's it. It's not the number of friends that counts, it's the quality of the relationship.
✅ This group is adressed to :
● People who want to build deep, genuine and caring relationships in a small group that looks the same, where they feel comfortable and emotionally safe to talk emotionally and get intimate about anything in their lives.
● Simple, loving, kind, hyper/sensitive and lovely people who spend a lot of time in their bubble thinking about the meaning of life, passionate about personal development, philosophy, meaningful conversations, debates ....
⛔ Please don't subscribe if :
● You don't see yourself in the group's aims and beliefs.
● You're travelling for a short period of time and don't live or intend to live in Paris.
● You are not sure if you will be able to come, please update your status to allow others on the waiting list to join. An absence without notice will result in an irrevocable ban.
Progress :
● ❗ For reservations, I'll send you a private Meetup message at least 5 hours before the meeting to confirm your reservation. If I don't receive a reply 2 hours before the meeting, I will send you a second message to let you know that you will be replaced by someone on the waitlist.
● We keep the session small, cosy and relaxed in a quiet place, prioritising regularity to encourage intimacy, connection, listening and speaking. (\~ 5/6 people)
● On arrival, if you feel comfortable, you will be suggested to choose and associate several drawn Feelings and Needs cards to express how you really feel at the moment, to talk about ourselves and communicate effectively.
● The best way to make progress is to make the conversation easy and natural, with everyone making an effort to suggest and write down what you want to talk about. You can write down your favourite topics/questions before the meeting. The meeting is participative and invite everyone if you feel comfortable being a leader and a power of suggestion.
Anyway, to keep the meeting running smoothly, I'll animate the meeting to make sure the conversation doesn't get wild or boring and I wouldn't hesitate to reframe people. In case of lack of inspiration we have a lot of deep conversation question card game which can help to find interesting questions.
● (Not compulsory) After the meeting we can finish in a nearby restaurant for those who wish to relax or continue our conversation.
Advice for a good moment :
● Leave your ego and mask at home, we are not here to impress anyone but to be ourselves with our strength, weakness, pride and shame.
Come with an open/deep/emotional/complex thought and vulnerability.
● Ask open-ended questions and invite the other person to describe what a situation was like for them or how they felt.
● Don't hesitate to be vulnerable and share information about yourself if needed.
Consider sharing personal information first to gain the other person's trust.
● Adopt an attitude of curiosity and genuine interest in what the other person is saying. Be thoughtful and try to put yourself in the other person's shoes so that you can see things from their perspective. Be truthful, caring and honest.
● Listen actively and ask follow-up questions.
● Be empathetic and offer emotional validation so that they feel seen and heard.
It is forbidden to judge, but try to understand.
● ⏱ Be aware of your speaking time for Equally Speak.
● Be aware never to provoke political or religious ideologies, but to accept differences of belief. Advice on non-violent communication can be given in the meeting to learn not to unintentionally hurt anyone when requested or needed.
● Remember to maintain a safe, and benevolent environment. People who are considered to be disruptive, problematic or simply not in tune with the energy of the group will not be allowed to return.
Finally, we're hug-friendly !!!

Want to Truly Heal from Emotional Trauma?
Why are we unhappy? Where does emotional pain come from? Studies show that people who suffer from long-term emotional pain have painful experiences in their lives that were never fully resolved in their mind. In other words, there were issues in the past that were not completely dealt with. This can include abuse in childhood, breakups, divorce, death of a loved one, to name a few.
How do you know whether you have gotten over something painful? Here is an easy test: Do you still have attention on what had happened to you? For instance, do you still find yourself thinking about something painful that you went through? If you are, then you are not over it. In fact, in severe cases, people find themselves playing a "tape" in their mind over and over again.
So how do you heal from your past? How do you stop the "tape" playing in your mind? In this meeting, you will learn a technique to help you with that.
Come join us! Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there.
