Avengers’ Saturday Cafe for the Homeless
Note: You may be removed from the attendance list if you've participated in the previous week's event. This allows for more people to experience this Meetup.
Avengers put your costumes on and let’s go and save the world!
Well we can’t save the world (yet), but we aim to try to play a small part in the lives of those experiencing homelessness by making their day a bit better!
Description: Before the event the organizer will post a list in the comment section of the attendees and what they are responsible to bring (food/drink, kitchen supplies, cleaning supplies). We normally ask each attending member to bring approximately $15-20 worth of ingredients/supplies to our event. We will use the items to prepare and serve food/drink at The Meeting Place.
Timeline: We will meet on location at 11:00 am, with lunch served between 12:30-1:00 pm.
Membership Dues: Membership dues are $2.00 for the calendar year. Membership dues go towards paying for food/supplies incurred by no-shows. Membership dues are due at the first meetup of the year that you attend.
No Shows/Late Un-RSVP: We’re relying on members who RSVP to bring key ingredients for recipes! Please try your best to show-up or alternatively change your RSVP early so another member may fill the empty spot.
\*\*\* If you are on the waitlist, keep checking as you may be moved into attendance to replace someone. We will try to message you to confirm your attendance in advance.
Donations will be assigned before the event.

This city has changed over the last few years. But what were the events that propelled the city in new ways, new avenues. This tour looks at the events that truly changed the city for good and some say for bad.
Buildings have been erected and others torn down, but certain happenings in the city changed the path forward forever. And those events were viewed as monumental at the time. Today, we see the outcome of let's say Hurricane Hazel's fury, the development of our parkland. Or the building of the subway system in 1954.
The first Great Fire, Christie Pits Riot, War of 1812, Constance Hamilton, Hurricane Hazel, and the creation of the Toronto Islands, all changed Toronto's destiny. But over time, those landmark stories have been forgotten. We need to bring them back and highlight them for the next generation! Let's get started! This tour explores the downtown area in great detail, and uncovers the stories that changed our impression of the city.
This walking tour begins on the **steps of Old City Hall.** This walk is for all fitness levels. Please dress for the weather, and bring your love of history was well.
This tour has a ticket price of $15.00 per person!

The Birth of Imperial China
Join us for an engaging history discussion as we explore the rise and transformation of imperial China during the Qin and Han dynasties, a pivotal era that laid the political and cultural foundations of the Chinese state. Beginning with the dramatic unification of China under the Qin in 221 BCE and continuing through the long and influential Han period, this age witnessed the creation of centralized imperial rule, the standardization of laws and infrastructure, the development of Confucian state ideology, and the opening of early global trade routes. It was a time of remarkable innovation and expansion, but also one marked by political intrigue, rebellions, and shifting ideas about power and governance.
**Topics for Discussion**
* The Unification of China under Qin Shi Huang
* Legalism and the Qin State System
* Standardization of Currency, Script, and Measurements
* The Terracotta Army and Imperial Authority
* The Fall of the Qin Dynasty
* The Rise of the Han Dynasty under Liu Bang
* Emperor Wu and the Expansion of the Han Empire
* The Establishment of Confucianism as State Ideology
* Wang Mang and the Xin Dynasty Reforms
* The Opening of the Silk Road
* Court Politics, Eunuchs, and Imperial Power
* The Decline of the Han Dynasty and the Yellow Turban Rebellion
🦋🏛️ DANFORTH WALK, BUTTERFLY MURAL & GREEK LUNCH🏛️🦋
**DANFORTH WALK, BUTTERFLY MURAL & GREEK LUNCH️**
Street Culture, Public Art & A Proper Greek Feast
There’s something about the Danforth that feels like old-school Toronto in the best possible way — vibrant, layered, proudly local, and full of stories.
Join us for a social walk along one of the city’s most iconic stretches: **Danforth Avenue**. As we stroll west toward downtown, we’ll pass lively patios, long-standing family restaurants, cozy cafés, independent shops, and the everyday rhythm of a neighbourhood that has shaped Toronto’s cultural identity for generations.
This area is famously home to the annual **Taste of the Danforth**, one of the largest street festivals in the city — and historically, it was once home to the largest Greek community outside of Greece. You feel that history in the bakeries, the signage, the music drifting from open doors.
It’s not just a walk.
I
t’s a little slice of Toronto heritage — experienced together.

\*\*\*
The Butterfly Mural Stop
Along the way, we’ll stop at the Butterfly Mural, sponsored by the **David Suzuki Foundation** as part of The Great Canadian Butterflyway Project.
It’s bold, colourful, and rooted in environmental awareness — a reminder that even in the middle of the city, we are connected to something larger. We’ll pause, take photos, chat, and enjoy a little moment of art-meets-nature in urban Toronto.
\*\*\*
️ Greek Lunch at a Danforth Institution
After our walk, we’ll sit down for lunch at the historic **Astoria Shish Kebob House**, one of the most well-known Greek restaurants in the city.
Expect:
Classic souvlaki
Lemon potatoes
Fresh Greek salad
Big, generous comfort food energy
Menu: Click Here!
Nothing bonds people like sharing a table and passing the tzatziki.
\*\*\*
♂️ What to Expect
We’ll walk at a relaxed, social pace — stopping to observe, chat, and enjoy the neighbourhood. The route will take us toward Danforth & Chester.
You’re welcome to leave at any time.

Please don’t sign up if you’re not ready to walk in real winter conditions. This event happens rain, snow, or classic Toronto wind.

Celebrate National Chip and Dip Day!
***Okay, call me crazy but you have got to try their chip n dip!*** Club 85 is a true hidden gem in German Village! Seriously, old school, good comfort food and drink. We will try to gather in spaces near the windows. While we'll share Chip n Dip, you'll want to order a sandwich, too.
**Where the Chip Began (1817)**
Potato chips can be traced back to an English chef, William Kitchiner, who includes ‘crisps’ in his bestselling cookbook, “The Cook’s Oracle.”
**Chip and Dip Popularity**
The popularity of chip and dip skyrockets at the end of World War II with new entertainment fads and the introduction of Lipton’s new advertising campaign for their famous French Onion Dip. (Club 185 doesn't openly admit it, but I'm pretty sure that's their dip recipe!)
**[Club 185](http://club185.com/)**—a true neighborhood bar serving since 1954, when it was known as a local 'speak-easy'. Located in German Village, Club 185 features a menu of quality casual comfort food and full bar. From politicians to lawyers, hardhats to hipsters—all find Club 185 the perfect place to tame their hunger and quench their thirst!
**PARKING**: I know, brick street parallel parking can be a pain. Two other choices, metered parking along Livingston heading towards Children's Hospital or across the street in the large church lot (park in spaces farthest away from the church entrance doors, closer to the street).
**PRE-EVENT**: **HAPPY HOUR (3-5pm)**: Italian drinks and bites at [Cento's happy hour](https://centogermanvillage.com/menus/), nearby.

COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above.
There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change.
The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/).
Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers.
For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.
