Burke Lake - Heron Rookery! (Rating: D)
*You must read the following NVHC Sign-in Sheet Statement/Liability Disclaimer, [https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf](https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf) and then answer the question that you will see when you RSVP with "I accept" to be permitted on the hike.* So windy last time that we didn't get to see much activity at the heron rookery. Let's try again! BASICS: This hike is almost 5 miles with essentially no elevation change. Pace will be about 2.6 miles an hour when moving. Good hike for a beginner. Please arrive a few minutes early to allow time to sign-in. We will leave promptly at 9:30 a.m. We are hoping to see some action at the Heron Rookery! DETAILS: There are restrooms if you continue into the parking lot where we meet, towards the lake, by the marina. Bring water and something to eat. We will probably stop half way. Good time for a snack. Sneakers or hiking shoes. DIRECTIONS: We will meet at the parking lot near the Marina. Enter the park at the Burke Lake Park Entrance on Ox Road (Route 123). If using a GPS to find the park, just key in "Burke Lake Park." More directions are below. After entering the park, go straight following the road as it curves right and goes into the marina parking lot. This will be the first parking lot (not counting some parking along the side of the road) that you come to. We congregate at the area soon after entering the parking lot. (GPS Coordinates: 38°45'36.2"N 77°18'09.0"W ) DOG POLICY: No dogs on this hike. Looking forward, Dotty Smith 703-439-8670 Anita DeAngelis 507-990-6055 PLEASE NOTE START TIME OF 9:30 a.m. FEE: Admission to Burke Lake Park is FREE for Fairfax County residents at all times. There is no charge for out-of-county residents on weekdays, except for a few holidays during the warmer months. On the weekends from April to October and those couple of holidays, there is $12.00 a car fee for those from outside of Fairfax County. More Directions: From I-95 Take exit #160 (Route 123 North). The sign will say Woodbridge, Occoquan, and Lake Ridge. Follow 123 North (Ox Road) for 7.5 miles to the park entrance on the right. (If you see the golf course, then you have gone too far. The golf course entrance is the next right off Route 123; this is beyond the park entrance. Good place to turn around, if need be.) From the Beltway (495) Take the Braddock Road West exit (Exit 54, VA-620) and travel approximately 2 miles. Turn left onto Burke Lake Road (at Kings Park Shopping Center). Follow Burke Lake Road for 5 miles. Turn left onto Route 123 South (Ox Road). The golf course entrance is the first left off Route 123. The park entrance is the second left off Route 123. From Route 66 Take the Fairfax County Parkway, Exit 55A (Route 286 South towards Springfield). Continue on the Fairfax County Parkway for approximately 5 miles. Take a right onto Burke Lake Road. At the next light, turn left onto Ox Road (Route 123). The golf course entrance is the first left off Ox Road. The park entrance is the second left off Ox Road.
Advanced Tarot and PotLuck dinner
Advanced Tarot and PotLuck dinner
Advanced Tarot. You need to know how to play. No open hands. Always happy to talk strategy, but these are not teaching sessions. See Tuesday French Tarot for beginners. Beginners will be invited to join as they improve. Goal is maximum 2 tables of 5 players, we can play in multiples of 3,4, or 5. I'll prepare the main, and post here by Monday with a list of what would work with. Please indicate in comments what you will bring. I will be happy to provide address as we get closer. Housekeeping notes: 1. We have just learned that if you are on the wait list and a spot opens up you do not get notified. I will try to notify when I see this happening but will not always catch it...check back. 2. If you cancel after RSVP window, those on wait list will not get a notification, the wait list goes away, nor do I get notification. So if you are canceling after 7pm Thursday night prior to event, reach out to me as well so I can notify a possible wait list player.

City Nature Challenge at Occoquan (Rating: D)
*You must read the following NVHC Sign-in Sheet Statement/Liability Disclaimer, [https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf](https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf) and then answer the question that you will see when you RSVP with "I accept" to be permitted on the hike.* **(YOU DON'T NEED TO ATTEND THIS HIKE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE CITY NATURE CHALLENGE. PLEASE READ ON!)** Come hike with us for up to 6ish flat miles on dirt trails along Belmont and Occoquan bays to survey birds, beasts, and blooms for the global City Nature Challenge. Even if you can't attend April 24, you can join this friendly nature competition and either survey on your own anywhere in DC, MD, and/or VA between April 24 to April 27 and/or help us (and other ordinary folks turned citizen-scientists) to identify our observations online from 4/28-5/10. You can find other in-person and/or virtual events here: [https://citynaturechallengedc.org/events/](https://citynaturechallengedc.org/events/) Our pace will range greatly, from dawdling to 3 mph with a plethora of stops. We’ll likely find nesting bald eagles, ospreys, and sunflower-yellow prothonotary warblers; uncommon spotted turtles; wildflowers, fungi; slinky snakes; and much more. The hike leader is a Virginia Master Naturalist but more a jack-of-all-trades than a specialist in birding or botany. So birders, botanists, herpetologists, biologists, and others with specialized knowledge are especially welcome. But EQUALLY WELCOME ARE COMPLETE NOVICES who are excited to learn about (and protect) the goodies in our figurative and literal backyards. IT'S EASY-PEASY TO JOIN US: 1\. RSVP here\. 2\. Before you come\, download the iNaturalist app and practice with it in your own neighborhood or in a local park\. Basically you just photograph an animal\, a bird\, a plant\, or fungi\, and just upload the pic to the app or website on your computer\. \(No pets or cultivated plants\, please\.\) [https://www.inaturalist.org](https://www.inaturalist.org/) 3\. OPTIONAL: Join the "City Nature Challenge 2026: Washington DC Metro Area" project on the app and join OBNWR’s own project on the app\. \(Not required but helpful to learn about relevant projects\.\) iNat offers lots of tips, including videos, if you need help. But if you prefer some more personalized help, just post here or send the hike leader a private Meetup message. **MEET:** 8 a.m. at Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, 14050 Dawson Beach Rd., Woodbridge, VA. SFS 1-18: Midnights in Maro [3-4]
SFS 1-18: Midnights in Maro [3-4]
A Starfinder Society Scenario designed for 3rd- through 4th-level characters, playable in 2-3 hours. As the danger posed by the Wreck of the Returned increases and the enemies arrayed against the Starfinder Society grow bolder, First Seeker Sarmak dispatches a team to the Akitonian city of Maro to find Nima, a former member of a mercenary company called the Rust Wraiths who were among the first to explore the Wreck of the Returned. Nima has gone into hiding, as she’s being hunted by numerous foes allied with the Wreck, including nodocites, converted, and agents of the Functionary. If the PCs can find and protect Nima from their shared enemies, Nima can give the PCs valuable information on the Wreck of the Returned, including insight into the motives of the mysterious being at its heart: Elovai. This is an adventure in the ongoing Invasion's Edge metaplot. Written by Rigby Bendele.
Youth D&D -The Frozen Abyss
Youth D&D -The Frozen Abyss
Welcome to Youth D&D! This is a monthly, in person, campaign for kids (our current group is a mix of between 9-14 years old) in the ice themed region of a homebrew world. We use 5.5 rules backwards compatible to 5e and I may occasionally mix in some official module content. This will be our 2nd session and players should come prepared with a level 4 character. Last session we discovered something fishy is going on and saved the town of Drift Hollow from a horde of undead emerging from the waterline. What will we find next? The Frozen Abyss is at the very fringe of the world an area mostly considered beyond civilization. A land of danger and mystery ready for you to explore. Join us as we sneak and fight our way across the Frozen Abyss, and (sometimes) convince enemies that we are just here to deliver invisible pizza and they have nothing to worry about at all. There is a $5 per person fee paid to Rerolled Games to participate, which can be used as store credit.
April Grand Gaming Melee
April Grand Gaming Melee
Do you remember the days when board and card games were only played – or even discussed – in the shadows? Did you wander dark alleys to meet shady purveyors of meeples, dice, and pawns? Thanks to AARGGH, games have become acceptable in all sectors of society, even in that bastion of culture, the public library. Enjoy the freedom to play the games of your choice without suffering public derision (well, maybe a little from players who defeat you) at our Grand Gaming Melee! There’ll be board games, dice games, card games, tile games, and just about every other kind of game that can be played on a tabletop. You’re encouraged to bring some of your favorites and teach them to new players, but feel free to come without any and play the games others bring. If you see one you’d like to try, there’ll be someone eager to teach you. And enjoy your day of socially acceptable games with sociallyacceptable snacks! Please bring something delicious to share: items that are likely to drip, smear, or splatter onto the games are discouraged, and mysterious products procured from shady figures in dark alleys will be probably be given a wide berth by your fellow players. Otherwise, anything easily and neatly consumed at the gaming tables is welcome. Popular delicious items include bags of chips, pretzels, crackers, and cookies. Some people bring a package of doughnuts or cupcakes; these are always popular and disappear quickly. Savory snacks like olives, vegetables with dip, or cheese appeal to players who don’t want to spend the entire day snacking on sweets. A few creative types may even bring something homemade; these contributions are even more appreciated. A refrigerator is available to store drinks and other items that should be kept chilled. Official start time is 10:30am. You can come and go at any time, but your host appreciates anyone who arrives as early as 10:00am (the library’s opening time) to help with setup. Many hands make light work! Cleanup begins around 4:00pm (or whenever you decide that you can’t squeeze in one more game before the end of the event). Remember, whoever starts cleanup first gets the best choice of leftover snacks to take home! As always, leave the room clean and tidy. **Please observe these rules regarding cleanup at Beatley library:** * Please ensure that food scraps, crumbs, and bits of packaging are not strewn in the kitchen or auditorium. The library closes shortly after our event ends, so anything edible left on the floor or counters will attract vermin overnight. Night vermin are the worst! * Please fold most of the tables and stack them under the coat rack – a few may remain where they were used – but **DO NOT FOLD THE CHAIRS**. Leave them out in any configuration that lets people walk around them easily. Many chairs are needed for programs the following day, so by folding them you only make more work for the organizers. On the other hand, more than a few tables left standing only impede the next day’s activities.
Yu-Gi-Oh! As It Never Was
Yu-Gi-Oh! As It Never Was
**Dust off those old classics in your binders and experience Yu-Gi-Oh! as it never was.** **Cookie-cutter deck lists, begone! Constant board wipes, begone! Tier-1 tyranny, begone! Get ready for the format you never knew you needed. If you’ve been utterly overwhelmed by the speed of the modern metagame, rejoice! If you’ve long suppressed the itch to bamboozle your buddies with obscure Traps none of them have heard of, your time has finally come! If you’ve always wondered what a format with 100 viable decks looked like, then prepared to be amazed, utterly.** **The AINW card pool contains every release originally printed before the TCG set, Duelist Alliance. Please note, this is not a true Retro format. We’ll be using updated card text for many cards formerly on Konami's Forbidden & Limited List. The inclusion of newer errata is not meant to tarnish the legacy of certain cards. Their inclusion is meant to maximize the number of viable options whilst preventing dangerous sequences such as Divine Wind FTK.** **Click the link to view the rules and restrictions below:** **[https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sW3SkG5XNor-W-gRvwuvCWwuWeMelt-KkwpHYpOOwO4/edit?usp=sharing](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sW3SkG5XNor-W-gRvwuvCWwuWeMelt-KkwpHYpOOwO4/edit?usp=sharing)** **Many of these parameters you’ll likely find surprising, sacrilegious even. Just keep an open mind and give my format a try. I think you’ll be surprised by the sheer number of strategies that are actually viable. I didn’t set out to create a list that was perfect. But, I do believe I have succeeded in crafting one that is actually CONSISENT in what it bans, something that Konami's Forbidden & Limited list has never been.**
