Desi Tech Socials
Hey you! Yes, you! 👋 Come join us for our favourite thing of the week — a super chilled Saturday evening hang with some of Dublin’s most interesting tech folks! ☕🍺
No boring presentations. No forced networking. No “so what do you do?” small talk awkwardness. 🙅♂️ Just good people, great conversations, and good vibes only — and let’s be honest, the Ferryman is the perfect spot for it! 🍻✨
Whether you’re a developer 💻, designer 🎨, founder 🚀, product person 📱, or just someone who loves all things tech — you belong here. We’re a friendly, welcoming bunch who love nothing more than a good natter about side projects, the latest in tech, career chats, or honestly just life in general! 😄
Here’s how the evening flows (loosely — we promise! 😄)
🕖 7:00pm – Doors open, grab your drink!
Roll in, get settled, and say hello to some familiar or brand new faces! No rush, no pressure — just come as you are 😊
🕖 7:15pm – Quick welcome & intros 👋
We’ll do a super casual round of hellos so nobody feels like a stranger — just your name, what you do, and one thing you’re excited about right now! (Tech or non-tech, we don’t mind! 😄)
🕗 7:30pm – Open conversation time 💬
This is the heart of the evening! We’ll throw out a couple of loose talking points to get things flowing — think current trends, things you’re building, problems you’re trying to solve, or just cool stuff you’ve come across lately. Chat freely, bounce around tables, meet everyone! 🙌
🕗 8:00pm – “60 seconds of fame” segment ⚡
Got a side project, an idea, or something you’re working on? This is your 60 seconds to share it with the group — no slides needed, just your voice! Totally optional but always a highlight of the night 🌟
🕘 8:30pm onwards – Free flow & good craic! 🎉
The agenda ends here and the fun really begins 😄 Keep the conversations going, swap contacts, find your next collab partner, or just enjoy the evening with great company!
🎯 What you’ll get:
∙ Real, genuine connections with people who just get it 🤝
∙ A relaxed, judgment-free space to be yourself 💛
∙ Fresh perspectives and maybe even your next collab partner! 🙌
∙ Great craic in one of Dublin’s cosiest pubs 🏠❤️
∙ A proper good time — because that’s what Saturdays are for! 🎉
Whether it’s your first time or you’re a regular face - everyone is welcome, always. 💚 Come say hello, we’d love to meet you!
📍 The Ferryman Pub, Dublin
🕖 7pm — see you there! 🥳
Monday 6th April Seapoint
Join me for a swim on Monday 6th April at 1pm, Weather pending.
All are welcome - newcomers and established members, swimmers, paddlers, and toe dippers.
I recommend that you don't stay in too long, like me, this time of year, and stay within your dept. We look out for each other but we are not lifeguards.
Bring warm clothes for after the swim as it's a bit cold this time of year.
Meet in shelters in front of tower near sea
Look forward to seeing you all there.
No workshop this week (6th April)
There is no workshop happening this bank holiday Monday (6th April), but we will be back next Monday (13th April) for more fun and games.
POTA on Easter Monday from Ticknock
Join us on **Easter Monday, 6 April**, for a **Parks on the Air (POTA)** outing from **Ticknock** in the Dublin Mountains.
If you have not come across POTA before, it is all about bringing amateur radio into the great outdoors, setting up in a qualifying park, and making contacts from the field. We did a quieter test run on Bull Island recently and it went well, so this time we are opening it up to the wider **TOG community and the public**.
We will meet at **10:30am** at the **Ticknock café** and then head off to find a good place to set up and operate. We expect to be on air for around **two hours**.
You are very welcome to come along, help out, and even have a go on the radio using the **club callsign EI0TOG**. Jeffrey Roe, **EI7IRB**, will be leading the activation.
Jeffrey is planning to cycle out, but there is parking nearby too. If radio is not really your thing, or you do not want to stay for the whole activation, Ticknock has plenty of walks so you can still join us for part of the outing.
After the POTA activation, there are also IRTS 2m and 70cm contests running, so anyone who wants to keep the radio fun going is welcome to do that too.
As always, this one is weather dependent. If the conditions are awful, we will give it a miss rather than spend another Monday getting soaked.
Read the full details here: https://www.tog.ie/2026/04/pota-on-easter-monday-from-ticknock/
We hope to see some of you there in person, or hear from you on the bands.

What is beauty?
We’ve all made the exclamation: “now, that is beautiful!” And life seems better, richer for it. What do we mean by ‘beauty’? What qualities does something require in order to be classified in such a way? What things can be given such label? Are there things that do not deserve to be called beautiful? Is beauty restricted to physicality? Is beauty merely subjective or does it have an objective framework? Is it a matter of the feminine side of life? Is it something internal or external?
Come along next Tuesday evening at the lovely Third Space Cafe Smithfield for a facilitated discussion about beauty. Newcomers are welcome.
NOTE: we ask for a 3 Euro donation to cover expenses. Pay on the evening by coin or Revolut.
Socrates Cafe: a space where ideas and dialogue can flourish.

CBusData: The Fellowship of the Star Schema: Transforming OLTP Data for Power BI
The Fellowship of the Star Schema: Transforming OLTP Data for Power BI
One does not simply build reports on OLTP data. Join us on an epic journey from the depths of raw, normalized tables to the shining halls of a well-modeled star schema fit for Power BI greatness. We will demystify the differences between OLTP and OLAP, walk through star schema vs snowflake (and why Power BI has a clear favorite), and show you the compression differences between normalized and columnar storage that will make you never look at an OLTP model the same way again.
We will cover the different types of dimensions, when to use them, and how to handle Slowly Changing Dimensions without losing your mind. You will leave knowing exactly how to identify a bad model, how to convert OLTP data into a clean star schema, and how to forge relationships that rule them all.
Whether you are a data wizard, a curious hobbit, or somewhere in between, your models will never be the same.
Data & Analytics Wednesday - The Data-Driven Brand
**The Data-Driven Brand: Using Analytics to Shape Perception**
Can you use analytics to improve tacos? This being CBUSDAW, we think the answer is probably “yes”, but we’re not sure how to implement or test this theory.
For our April meetup we’ve got Sara Kear, CMO of Condado Tacos, to investigate this delicious question. Sara will explore how she blends quantitative data and qualitative customer feedback to shape brand positioning and drive business decisions. We all know that marketing and analytics go way beyond attribution. Sara will show how Condado uses customer insights to inform product and pricing strategy.
She’ll also highlight how Condado leverages customer feedback at scale to influence operational priorities, positioning marketing as the voice of the customer across the organization. In the last 12 years Condado has gone from one location in Columbus to 52 locations across 10 states, so we’re guessing there’s more to that growth than really good guac (though the guac probably helps).
Ultimately, this talk focuses on the intersection of art and science—using data to inform creativity and build a brand that resonates with customers in a measurable way.
**About Our Speaker**
Sara Kear is Chief Marketing Officer at Condado Tacos, where she oversees brand, restaurant design, menu and pricing strategy, off-premise including catering, and customer data strategy. Since joining in 2021, she has helped grow the brand from 19 to 52 locations while building a data-driven marketing organization focused on loyalty and customer insights. Condado has since been named to the Inc. 5000, recognized as Breakout Retailer by Chain Store Age, and consistently ranked among FastCasual’s Top 100 Movers & Shakers.

Prompt vs. Paintbrush
AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s?
This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation?
We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee.
