National Gallery Picture Hunt
Please aim to turn up for 1:00-1:30 when teams are being arranged. The Hunt starts at 1:30. You're losing search time if you're late! Bring a pen please.
**We meet outside the new Sainsburys entrance further down the building. I’ll be wearing a red Meetup cap.**
The National Gallery was founded in 1824, after the British government bought a collection of 38 pictures from the banker and collector John Julius Angerstein, consisting of Italian, Dutch and English works.
We have a unique take on Treasure Hunts that broadens your art knowledge while sleuthing around gallery rooms.
You are all presented with a sheet of 20 part images taken from paintings in a few adjoining designated rooms.
You will also have a map of the Gallery. The selected adjoining rooms are listed P, Q, R and S. The clipboard holder enters the room letter to note the image location.
Your collective mission is to find them. Usually it’s groups of three to four depending on numbers.
Or bring a team of up to three guests with you! Check previous winners and Hunt sheet in the pics below.
Dead simple, right? Well, yes, if you can spot them all. Generally though, results are always close.
Check photos for the previous Hunt sheet. If you’re new, you can see what your team has to do. Stella said " I was apprehensive about trying this, but once I did, I loved it, our team was great fun".
We are a happy and friendly group whose membership for some now goes back ten years.
It’s very addictive wandering around looking at famous artwork. Our events make you see new parts of a painting you hadn’t noticed before. Or that fresh work has been introduced.
We’ve done quite a few in the last two years and feel very much at home here. We never get tired looking at famous art.
I think we come here more often than paying Gallery members!
There's plenty of seating around to take the odd rest and look at the same time.
Our Treasure Hunts are interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills.
We meet outside the Sainsburys entrance further down the building. Look out for me under a red Meetup cap!
The starting process is as follows. The earlier your team sets off, the more time you have. So turning up early ready for a 1.30 start is a bonus.
Team answer sheets have to be back by 3.15.
We meet back in the area next to the Espresso cafe where we mark up. In case of a tiebreak, there will be a general art knowledge numerical question where the “nearest to” wins.
First team prizes are interesting varieties of chocolate. There is also a prize for the funniest/outrageous team name judged by Sue, my glamorous assistant.
So there’s everything to play for. Some players are thinking of team names before they turn up!
We always pop into a local pub or Wetherspoon (Magnus Pyke) for a quick drink after if anybody so wishes.
Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers. This is what Meetup is all about. Come and join us.
**There is a £7 cash/card charge on the day. I supply a pen and clipboard but it helps you to bring a pen as well to mark your own sheets.**
**Rucksacks now have to be worn front of body.** Items left in the cloakroom are charged at £3 per item.
Contact number on the day is 07422334411 if your transport is delayed. If texting leave your name please. Email is stevebetts2000@yahoo.co.uk
**Don’t forget to cancel via the “Edit RSVP” button if you can’t make it. Please do this well in advance when you know, so it allows good notice for someone else to take your place, and minimizes waiting about time on the day for other attendees.**
**Your consideration is greatly appreciated.**

**SPECIAL EDITION: CryptoMondays London x ETHLDN**
Ethereum is evolving — again.
With a major fork on the horizon, growing conversations around protocol ossification, zkVMs, and long-term quantum resistance, the big question is:
**What does Ethereum’s future actually look like?**
This month, we’re teaming up with our frens at ETHLDN for a special co-hosted edition focused entirely on the world’s most battle-tested smart contract platform.
We’ll start with the fundamentals (yes, this is still CryptoMondays - newcomers welcome 👋), before moving into deeper discussion around:
• Why upcoming forks matter
• Ethereum’s “endgame” and protocol ossification
• How zkVMs fit into the roadmap
• Maximising decentralisation in practice
• Quantum resistance

Tim’s walks: William Hogarth in Smithfield
Come with Tim on a further exploration of Smithfield walking in the footsteps of the great C18 painter and engraver William Hogarth. He has been called the father of English Art as he developed a style uniquely English, in fact, uniquely London. It was a reflection of the violence, hypocrisy, squalor and vitality of the streets of London. From humble beginnings he became wealthy and famous but fashions moved on and he never became part of the art establishment.
We will see where he was born, where he worked and where he rose to fame.
We’ll aim to visit 3 great historical institutions which he knew well:
The St. John’s Hospitallers gatehouse where he and his father once worked
Greater St Bartholomew’s church (used in four weddings and a funeral) which was once his parish church
And the one you probably haven’t seen before: the Great Hall of St Bartholomew’s hospital including its Hogarth Mural, recently restored to its former glory. We have exclusive tickets booked for this at 12 noon.
Afterwards we’ll go on to eat and drink in one of the great pubs of London.
We meet at Farmer J, 50 Cowcross Street Londonn EC1M 6 AL at 10.30 to start walking at 10.45
Fee is £12 payable by cash or card in the day or by bank transfer or PayPal.
Phone is O7846899156

Parkland Nature Reserve Walk, 4.5miles
* We will meet outside the Alexandra Palace rail station, please aim for the Buckingham Road exit.
* The Parkland Walk follows the course of the old railway that ran between Finsbury Park and Alexandra Palace. The four and a half miles provides tranquillity and a chance for those living in London, to enjoy the green environment in the very heart of the city.
* It is London's longest Local Nature Reserve and supports a remarkable range of habitats and wildlife. Over two hundred species of wild flower have been recorded and it is probably the only place in Haringey where orchids rub shoulders with dandelions and ivy clambers up fig trees.
* Hedgehogs, foxes, butterflies and a vast array of birds are spotted on a daily basis and a rare species of deer, the muntjac, is spotted from time to time.
* The route along Parkland Walk is that of the old railway track. While there have been improvements to the surface over the years it is uneven in places and it can be muddy after wet weather. It is used by cyclists and runners, but pedestrians should have priority.
We will finish our walk outside the Finsbury Park station. Optional drinks/lunch at the end of the walk.
What to bring:
Comfortable footwear
Water
Photo-taking gadgets and chargers
An umbrella just in case (it's London after all)
The walk is free for members who have subscribed for an annual membership. For other members the fee is £5 cash/card on arrival to contribute towards the organiser's meetup fees and costs.
The annual pass option is £15 payable by cash or card on the day. This will provide access to at least 40 walks per year (members are welcome to bring a guest to each event).
All walks are free for the NHS staff (also welcome to bring a guest).
***'No Show' Policy:*** *If the member replied 'yes' but did not attend the event, did not update the RSVP and did not inform the organiser on 3 occasions – this triggers an automatic removal from the group. That's once for events with a waiting list.*
Day trip by coach - Historical & Spiritual Glastonbury! (NOW FULL)
THE TRIP IS NOW FULL, IF YOU WISH TO ATTEND, ADD YOURSELF TO THE WAITING LIST AND I WILL CONTACT YOU IF A PLACE BECOMES AVAILABLE.
Come along on Saturday 21st March to visit the historical and spiritual town of Glastonbury!
**About Glastonbury**
Glastonbury is situated at a dry point on the low-lying Somerset Levels, 23 miles south of Bristol. Not only is is very historical, its a highly spiritual town which attracts New Age & Christian communities on pilgrimage.
Evidence from timber trackways show that the town has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Glastonbury Abbey was founded in the 7th century and dominated the town for the next 700 years until the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530's. It was one of the most important abbeys in England and was the site of Edmund Ironside's coronation as King of England in 1016.
Many of the oldest surviving buildings in the town, including the Glastonbury Tribunal, George Hotel and Pilgrims' Inn and the Somerset Rural Life Museum, which is based in an old tithe barn, are associated with the abbey.
Glastonbury has been described as a New Age community which attracts people with New Age and Neopagan beliefs, and is notable for myths and legends often related to Glastonbury Tor (a natural hill where a roofless church sits on top). Joseph of Arimathea is said to have arrived in Glastonbury and stuck his staff into the ground, when it flowered miraculously into the Glastonbury Thorn. King Arthur is also said to be buried under the Tor.
There is also a natural spring in the town called the Chalice Well, where people collect its waters to drink and bathe in.

Let's try a Friday Night Fish Fry!
We thought of one of the interesting things that can be enjoyed at this time of the year. We will be meeting at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for a "Fish Fry" in Marian Hall on Friday, March 27th at 5:00 PM.
It might be fun for you to experience what has become a tradition on the Fridays before Easter. They will have fried fish or baked fish, French fries and Cole slaw, as well as beverages, all for $16.00 for adults. They will have other beverages and desserts available for sale, as well. We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. I'll try to have signs outside Marian Hall that Identify our group. We hope to have you join us!
