Prague's Newest SciFi Book Club (English-language)
**Greetings Sci-fi Enthusiasts in Prague!**
Our June 2026 book pick is, *This Is How You Lose the Time War* by
Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone. Thank you to everyone that attended in May and voted on our book selection.
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandant finds a letter. It reads: *Burn before reading.* Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, grows into something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future.
Except the discovery of their bond would mean death for each of them. There's still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win that war. (description via Goodreads)
Shout out to everyone that attended our book club in May and voted for our book selection.
Thank you!
Alejandra y Richard

Czech Co-Learning Session 🇨🇿
Learning Czech can be hard and demotivating, especially when studying alone.
**This meetup is a shared study session where we come together to stay focused, motivated, and make progress — each in our own way.**
This is a co-learning / co-studying session, not a class. There is no teacher, no lesson, and no study material provided.
Everyone comes with their own resources and studies independently, in a shared environment.
🧠 **How it works**
• We all bring our own material:
• textbooks
• homework from a Czech course
• Duolingo or other apps
• reading practice
• vocabulary review, etc.
• We mainly work individually
• We are free to:
• ask questions
• help each other
• share tips and resources
• No teacher, no formal structure, no pressure
👥 **Who is it for?**
• Czech learners of all levels
• Non-Czech speakers (expats, internationals)
• Czech native speakers are welcome if they want to help, but this is not a language exchange
⏱ **Practical info**
• Location: Cafedu
12, Škrétova 490, 120 00 Praha 2
(Metro A and C, Muzeum station)
• Duration: 2 hours, or less or more, as you want
• Day & time: Monday, 18:00
• Group size: small group for now
• Free event — please support the café by ordering a drink ☕
If you’re learning Czech and lack motivation when studying alone, come join us — let’s find it together 🙂

The perfect code doesn't exi...
The perfect code doesn't exi...
by Martin Hořeňovský
Perfect code doesn't exist, right? There are always tradeoffs, complications and hidden complexities in the way. At least until now. I wrote the perfect C++ function, and I'll show it to you. What's more, I'll prove it to you, using all the different automated tools and approaches we commonly rely on during development: compiler warnings, static analysis, code coverage and others.
In practical terms, I will showcase various tools we use during development; what issues they can catch, what issues they do catch, and why they protect us from Murphy, but not Machiavelli.
Timetable:
18:00 Get together, setup, socialize
18:30 talk starts
??:?? talk ends, more socializing

Via Ferrata – Pastýřská stěna, Děčín (Day Trip)
**A vertical sandstone wall rising straight from the banks of the Elbe. Děčín Castle staring at you from across the river. 16 routes bolted into solid rock, ranging from first-timer-friendly to genuinely hard. And it's 90 minutes from Prague by train.**
Pastýřská stěna — Shepherd's Wall — is the longest via ferrata in the Czech Republic and the only one located right in the middle of a city. You climb from the Elbe embankment to the top of a 150–170m sandstone cliff, with the river canyon and castle below you the entire way. It's the perfect introduction to via ferrata — or a great morning workout if you've done it before and want to push harder lines.
What makes this place special is that you can do it multiple times in one day, on different routes. Beginners start on the easier B lines and get a feel for the gear. More experienced climbers go straight for the D routes and find they're harder than labelled. Everyone ends up at the same viewpoint on top, looking down at the same improbable view.
**Who's this for?**
Everyone. Literally. Kids from age 12, first-timers, experienced climbers — the wall has something for all of you. The only deal-breaker is a serious fear of heights. If you're on the fence about whether you can handle it: you can. Come and find out.
***
**🗓️ The Day**
🚉 **08:00 — Meet at Praha hl.n. (main entrance)**
We board the direct train to Děčín together. \~90 minutes, cheap ticket bookable on the **ČD app** (cd.cz). Hop on at any station along the Praha–Děčín line if that's easier.
🥾 **\~09:45 — Děčín hl.n. → Pastýřská stěna**
10-minute walk from the train station along the Elbe embankment to the base of the wall. You'll see it from the station — it's hard to miss.
🧗 **\~10:00 — Gear up & briefing**
Rental at **Active Point Děčín** (\~150m from the wall, towards Tyršův most) — full set (harness, Y-lanyard, helmet, gloves) for **\~250 CZK/day**. No need to bring your own gear. We run a quick safety briefing for first-timers before anyone clips in.
🧗 **\~10:30 — Climbing**
16 routes, 150–170m each, grades B to E. We split into groups by experience and climb at our own pace. **Checkpoints at the top of each route** — we regroup, rest, and decide whether to go again or call it a day.
⚠️ **Important grade note:** The routes here are graded by the builder — and they run consistently harder than labelled. B feels like C, C feels like D. Come prepared for more than the grade suggests.
🍺 **\~13:00 — Lunch on the Elbe embankment**
Cafés and restaurants right by the river. Sit in the sun, order something cold, and look up at what you just climbed.
🧗 **\~14:00 — Second round (optional)**
Those who want more lines go back up. Those who are done explore the embankment or Děčín Castle nearby.
🚉 **\~16:00 — Firm meeting point at Děčín hl.n.**
We catch the train back together. Back in Prague by \~17:30.
***
**⛈️ Weather note**
Climbing is strictly prohibited when it rains or the wall is wet — this is a safety rule, not a suggestion. We'll monitor the forecast in the WhatsApp group and confirm the day before. If conditions are bad, we reschedule.
***
**🧗 Gear rental on-site**
Everything you need is available at **Active Point Děčín**, \~150m from the wall:
| Item | Cost |
| ---- | ---- |
| Full via ferrata set (harness, Y-lanyard, helmet) | \~250 CZK/day |
| Gloves | Included or small extra |
No need to bring your own kit. If you have your own gear, bring it — but it's not required.
***
**🎒 What to bring**
* Closed shoes with non-slip soles (trail runners are perfect, no sandals or hiking boots)
* 1.5–2L water + snacks or cash for lunch
* Light backpack you can climb with
* Rain layer just in case
* Cash for gear rental (card may not be accepted at the rental shop)
**Dogs:** Not recommended on the wall itself · **Kids:** Suitable from age 12 with experience
***
**💰 Cost (per person)**
| Item | Cost |
| ---- | ---- |
| Train Praha ↔ Děčín (return) | \~150–200 CZK |
| Gear rental | \~250 CZK |
| Lunch | bring your own or \~200–300 CZK |
| **Total** | **\~600–750 CZK (\~€25–30)** |
This is completely **non-profit** — no fees, no markups. You only pay your own costs.
***
**🚌 Option A — Train (recommended)**
Praha hl.n. → Děčín hl.n., direct, \~90 min, hourly service. Cheapest and easiest — no parking, no driving, just get on the train.
**🚗 Option B — Carpool**
\~1.5h drive from Prague. Parking directly by the wall along the Elbe embankment (can get busy on summer weekends — arrive early). Coordinate in WhatsApp after RSVP.
***
**RSVP here** and you'll be added to our WhatsApp group — that's where we share the exact train time, confirm the weather, and sort any last-minute details. See you at the wall. 🧗
141. [pro:]TEST! Filip Hric - AI píše kód. Kto zaručí kvalitu?
**Anotace přednášky:**
AI nástroje píšu kód rýchlejšie ako kedykoľvek predtým. No rýchlosť bez kontroly kvality je len technický dlh vo väčšom meradle.
Žije na Slovensku so svojou ženou a štyrmi deťmi. Beháva a hrá na gitare.
Těšíme se - organizátoři [Pro:]Test!
**POZOR**!

Symposium
Join us for Symposium! 🌞🌻🌳
In antiquity, a symposium was a gathering of friends who came together to recline around a shared table, where wine and conversation flowed freely into the night. Together, they would choose a topic and take turns speaking, listening, and laughing—guided by the rhythms of drink and dialogue.
Inspired by this tradition, our Symposium has no set theme. It's an invitation to come together with other curious minds, to offer up questions or ideas, and to vote together on where to begin. Whether you're hungry for connection or simply seeking space to speak and be heard, you're warmly welcomed to join the conversation.
Symposium will meet in parks throughout Prague, embracing the sunshine and pleasant weather while we have it. Bring a blanket or something to sit on. There’s no cost to join, but please bring a snack or drink to share, if you're able. Most of all, bring a curious mind and a willingness to learn from the insight of others.
Feel free to bring a friend or two--also, children and friendly dogs are welcome!
\*\*\*
If the weather doesn't cooperate, we'll try to find an alternate venue—so keep an eye on the event chat or your email for updates.
Also, despite the origins of the Symposium, our goal is not necessarily to get drunk and the organizer would encourage you not to come with that sole purpose in mind. :)
The first 45 minutes of the event will be dedicated to simply getting to know one another, and we highly encourage you to join for this part. We will then vote whether to continue free conversation, to join together in a single conversation, or to split up into multiple groups. Afterwards, you’re welcome to stay or follow onto any spontaneous activity that unfolds.
A note on attendance: If you need to cancel, please do so at least a few days in advance and update your RSVP accordingly. This helps honor the host’s efforts and makes space for others who would like to attend. Repeated last-minute cancellations or no-shows may result in being placed on the waitlist for future events.
Philosophical Reading: Byung Chul-Han’s The Burnout Society
**Why are so many of us exhausted** — not from hardship, but from **the relentless pressure to do more, be more, optimize more?** Korean-German philosopher Byung-Chul Han has a diagnosis, and it might make you look at your own daily life differently.
The Burnout Society is a short, sharp book that asks **why burnout, depression, and anxiety have become the characteristic experiences of our time — and whether the problem runs deeper than stress management or work-life balance.**
Byung-Chul Han is a Korean-German philosopher based in Berlin who writes short, dense books diagnosing what’s gone wrong in contemporary life. He writes short, dense books — often under 100 pages — that draw on continental philosophy, cultural theory, and East Asian thought to diagnose something gone wrong in contemporary life. The Burnout Society, first published in German in 2010, was one of his early breakthroughs and one of his most widely read works.
Join us for a close reading and open discussion. No prior knowledge of Han or continental philosophy is required. Participants are encouraged to read the text in advance and come prepared with a passage, a question, or a point of resistance.
