First meeting of London "What do we want as a Sustainable Planet?"
The world is in crisis and many people think we've gone past the tipping point and the planet is doomed.
However, there are those who have hope and faith in science that some can survive the polycrisis and get to live in a sustainable society and planet.
But there's a problem... **There's no clear vision of what a sustainable society and planet should be**, and without that destination, how can we set out on the journey to get there?
Please join like-minded people to discuss this. We'll agree an agenda at the start of the meeting.
Bring an open mind, suggestions and perhaps a pad of paper.
**Here are some topics to be covered.**
Please use the comments/chat to suggest other areas for consideration
*Depending on the mood of attendees, the frequency of further meetups can be agreed.*
**WHAT DO WE WANT A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY AND PLANET TO LOOK AND FEEL LIKE?**
· A planet with clean atmosphere, oceans and soil with systems in place to keep them that way

· Access to healthcare, hygiene and sanitation for all
· Access to quality education for all
· A more responsible system of financial structures which embraces the best of co-operative production, capitalism and other systems
· A safe justice system for all
· Societies which respect for the diversity of opinion, ethnicity, sexuality, religion
· Respect for the natural resources and fragility of Planet Earth and their finite capacity
· Societies where the more fortunate, stronger and healthier help those less strong, less fortunate or less healthy.
· Peaceful co-existence between the varying communities of the planet
**What Freedoms ?**
· Freedom to travel anywhere
· Freedom to worship (should there be limitation such as worship should not be based on destroying the existing system…??)
· Freedom from violence
· Freedom from hate
· Freedom from poverty (how define?)
· Freedom of speech
· Freedom from anxiety about the future
· Freedom from concentration of power
· Freedom to preserve culture and arts

Here's what some of our other students have to say about our classes:
Dean "I started Bushin a few months ago. Having done martial arts for 5 years in another art, I was open to new ideas of what may come with this one. I am thrilled to say it has been fantastic. My instructor Stephen is a legend, he knows what he's talking about and has a no bs way of getting to a point. He is a lover of martial arts and it shows.
His enthusiasm rubs off onto myself and the other students which creates a great learning environment.
This art is marvellous, the group is a humble yet enthusiastic class of students coming to learn. I felt like I was part of the group the moment I joined. Higher belted student don't have an ego and are happy to help and train along side anyone in the class. Joining Bushin has been a tremendous experience."
Konrad "Great place to learn self-defence . Coach with a passion to MMA show you how to react and defend yourself"
Penny "I was completely new to martial arts so I didn't really know what I wanted to learn but I love the way they teach a mixture of martial arts and have a set syllabus. I felt like I was learning boxing, Kickboxing, jujitsu and self defence all in the same class which was great value for money!"
Elizabeth "Great class for beginners and those with experience. Stephen is so welcoming and has been great at helping me find equipment and modify exercises to help with my mobility issues! Really recommend for anyone wanting to try martial arts or get fit in a friendly atmosphere :)"
Lucia "I joined Bushin after a friend of mine was attacked in London and I thought it was a good idea to learn how to defend myself in case something like that happened to me as well. I didn't have any previous experience of self defense or fighting and I thought that this would hold me back, but it was definitely not the case: people in Bushin are so welcoming and nice to each other, always ready to help - it's truly a place for every level, from beginner to black belt. It's much more than a self defense class, it's real street fighting and a super good workout as well , but most importantly, it's great fun! I highly recommend it"

Well, the last book wasn’t popular for all sorts of reasons. A shame as Adam Kay’s books have always entertained in the past.
This month we’re reading Daphne du Maurier,
The book is The King’s General. It’s set in the seventeenth century and tells the story of a family and a family riven by war and features one of fiction’s most original heroines.

Change:NOW! Mobilising the Progressive Majority
Exciting event from comrades at Compass and the Progressive Economy Forum! [Tickets here.](https://actionnetwork.org/ticketed_events/may_30_2026?source=cmpswebsite&)
Last year, Compass brought together 450+ progressive pioneers at ‘Change:HOW? A Decade of Radical Renewal’ to re-orient the current Labour government’s promise of a ‘decade of national renewal’.
This was an amazingly successful day and a springboard for our work in the Labour Party to get organised, energised and mobilised through Mainstream.
But the past year has proven one thing above all else: the need for an organised progressive agenda **across** parties and movements, the **relationships** to make that agenda happen, and the **urgency** of making change.
That’s why Compass is thrilled to be working with [Progressive Economic Forum](https://progressiveeconomyforum.com/) to host **‘Change:NOW! Mobilising the Progressive Majority’**, a day of debate, disagreement and deliberation between progressives of all parties (and none!) on **Saturday 30th May 2026.**
The conference will feature speakers from across the progressive parties and movements, including keynote speeches from **Mayor Andy Burnham, Caroline Lucas,** and **Gary Stevenson.** Please find a full speaker list below.
We’ll also be joined by partners including **Friends of the Earth, UCL Policy Lab, New Economics Foundation, Make Votes Matter, Unlock Democracy,** and **Migrant Democracy Project.**
We are splitting the day between focusing on what policies we need to deliver the change to reset our economy, and the political and cultural changes we need to bring about those policies.
Through establishing consensus on political strategy and economic direction - and highlighting the important differences in detail across progressive parties and the wider movement - this event will be the catalyst for the change our country so desperately needs.
So whether you’re a Labourite, a Green, a Lib Dem, otherwise spoken for or unaligned, get your ticket today and join us for what promises to be an inspiring and imaginative day of ideas and political debate!
The event will take place on **Saturday 30th May** at **Rich Mix**, 35-47 Bethnal Green Road, London, E1 6LA.
With our partners: Friends of the Earth \| UCL Policy Lab \| New Economics Foundation \| Mainstream \| Renewal \| Economic Change Unit \| Make Votes Matter \| Unlock Democracy \| Migrant Democracy Project

Borders and Belonging: A Humanist Perspective on Immigration in South Africa
In recent months, South Africa has witnessed growing tensions around immigration, identity, economic inequality, and social belonging. Public debate has increasingly focused on questions of migration, citizenship, xenophobia, and the treatment of African migrants within African societies.
**The Association of Black Humanists and Bolelang Rakeepile of the South African Atheists** invites members of the public, activists, scholars, students, and community leaders to a thoughtful and respectful discussion exploring these issues through a humanist lens.
Together, we will examine:
\* What drives hostility toward immigrants and foreign nationals?
\* How do colonial history, inequality, and economic hardship shape current attitudes?
\* What does humanism teach us about human dignity, solidarity, and shared humanity?
\* Can borders coexist with compassion and justice?
\* How do we challenge xenophobia while addressing legitimate social concerns?
This conversation seeks to encourage critical thinking, empathy, and constructive dialogue at a time when division and fear threaten social cohesion across the continent. Bolelang will lead the discussion and he would also be happy to answer questions from the audience.
**Date: 30 May 2026**
**Time: 3pm (London time) please arrive by 2.45pm**
**Venue: Pembury Community Centre,**
**1 Atkins Square, Dalston Lane, E8 1HL**
Admission is free and all are welcome.
A voluntary donation of £3 would be much appreciated.
**No human being is illegal. Our shared humanity must remain greater than our borders!!**

Take Control Of Your Life, Freedom From Negative Thoughts & Irrational Emotions
Feeling down? Sometimes depressed? Can't focus? Negativity & stress? Recent losses? Creativity in career and personal life hindered by mental blocks? Sometimes we never fully recover from traumatic experiences.
Whether it was yesterday, last week or a year ago, traumatic experiences - a loss of a loved one, losing a job, a breakup - can leave you scarred. You talk about it and feel a little better, but it never goes away. After you hang up the phone, it's still there; the sadness, the cloud, the over-thinking, the worry, the guilt. You try to focus, but you're blocked. You try to look forward into new experiences, new relationships but a cloud is hanging over you, casting a shadow on what you once considered a bright, cheerful future.
What happened to your courage? Your strength of character? You're 'why not' attitude? Whoever said 'time heals' must have had a special time machine, because after weeks, months, years, you're wondering - when exactly does that kick in? Sometimes it seems like drinking or drugs are the way to go. But they wear off, and now the problem is still there with added side effects from the drugs.
At this free local Meetup event we will talk about:
* What causes grief, anxiety and depression to become chronic.
* Is it possible to regain your joy and happiness even after traumatic experiences?
* How to break away from negativity and focus on the future
* What are the steps to take to get control of your mind and your emotions?
Learn about a safe, gentle, do-it-yourself counseling that can be done in the comfort of your own home.
Let's explore safe, effective solutions for healing from traumatic experiences.
Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to the event. We look forward to seeing you there.
This group is sponsored by the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Center.
