Digital freedom for all: First Hands-on Workshop in Brussels
# Digital freedom isn't just for techies. It's for everyone.
Join us for a hands-on workshop where you will learn how to adopt Europe-made **and/or** open-source day-to-day applications to gain independence from big tech providers.
Concretely:
1. Understand which Europe-made **or** open-source applications exist in the market for *email, calendar, chat, browser, search engine, operating system, etc.*
2. Step-by-step instructions on how to install and configure. You choose which apps you feel comfortable testing!
# Agenda
1. Welcome & Introduction (10min)
2. Short documentary on Digital Sovereignty (10min)
3. Hands-on workshop (90min)
Together, we can move away from surveillance platforms toward open-source and privacy-friendly alternatives.
Europe's digital future depends on choices we make today and it starts with the tools on your phone and computer.
## Inspired by Ghent’s Digital Sovereignty movement
Inspired by FOSS workshops that have been thriving in Ghent, this event brings hands-on guidance to help you make the switch, step by step, at your own pace.
# What to bring
**Preferably**: Laptop.
**Optional**: Phone or tablet & USB Stick (8GB)
We will work with all types of applications *(email, calendar, chat, browser, search engine, operating system, etc.)* but **you choose** the ones you would like to adopt!
# About the organizers
This initiative is entirely self-funded, rooted in the belief that understanding our digital world should be open to everyone.

**A MESSAGE FOR NEWCOMERS:**
*In the three years of hosting this coffee group, I have met many people who struggle with anxieties when coming to an event for the first time. Sometimes, it took them more than one attempt before being able to join.*
*Occasionally, people reach out to me before the event, and I have always been grateful for that as it offers the opportunity to communicate with each other and to find the best and most gentle way for that person to join the group.*
*I would like to encourage everyone who struggles with this to contact me before. It would really be too bad if you can't join us, as it mostly gets better the second or third time you come.*
*In addition to that, if you arrive and notice any signs of nervousness or fear, you can always let me know right then.*
**THANK YOU AND SEE YOU ALL ON Saturday!**
Somatic Movement in Nature
**Somatic Movement** is a powerful method based on principles and wisdom from Eastern movement practices, such as yoga and Tai Chi, as well as Western techniques and insights from neuroscience, trauma therapy, and burnout recovery.
The goal is to activate your body and brain by allowing energy to flow through your system without overloading the nervous system. This is achieved through gentle, intentional movements, stretches and exercises, but also by increasing awareness and sensory perception — both internally (within ourselves) and externally (of our surroundings).
Combining tension-releasing stretches, easy flow-restoring exercises (using trees, branches, logs, stones, hills...), doing silent or touch meditations and playful authentic relating games, we're able to release a lot of stored tension and start to feel free, open-hearted, unassuming and adventurous again.
The 2h-sessions focus on gradually increasing physical resilience, but include emotional and energetic aspects as well to restore balance in body, mind and spirit. There is no competitive stake, there are no extremes or high-intensity actions involved. But we do sometimes challenge our personal comfort zones a bit, sliding in and out, bumping into some limiting belief or conviction we might carry within. We learn by looking at things from different perspectives.
The sessions are guided by seasoned therapist Ken.
For more info on his practices, please visit: www.nieuwegrond.be
**PRACTICAL**
This is a free introduction session for you.
But since this is a professional practice, where paying people might participate as well, we can only offer this once. If you wish to continue afterwards, you can talk to Ken personally or book through his website mentioned above.
The session starts at 10h sharp and ends at 12h.
Meeting and end-point is always Parking Forest Playground Everzwijnbad, Weertsedreef 16, Oud-Heverlee at the border of Meerdaelwoud. Please read the location description well, Google Maps can be a bit tricky.
Since we're in the forest and will connect with trees, branches, soil etc, please make sure your clothes can handle this. If you wish, you can bring some water and small towel for comfort, but it's not a must. Please be aware that the organizer can not be held responsible for any damage or losses you might suffer. A safe environment is a priority for everyone.
The event will be cancelled only when the weather really doesn't allow it.
If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask via personal message.
We hope to see and connect with you there!
Ken
Forest Play: Movement and Reconnection in Nature
FOREST PLAY (10h-12h)
The Forest Play - sessions are inclusive, nurturing and natural reconnecting events, focussing on restoring or replenishing energy, the sense of joy and personal perspective by interacting (and playing) with nature's healing elements.
Combining tension-releasing stretches, easy flow-restoring exercises (using trees, branches, logs, stones, hills...), doing silent or touch meditations and playful authentic relating games, we're able to get in touch with our inner-child and start to feel free, open-hearted, unassuming and adventurous again, bringing back the joy and vitality we all carry deeply within, but often believed to have been lost. Our hearts gradually open and start reconnecting again.
The 2h-sessions focus on gradually increasing physical resilience, but include emotional and energetic aspects as well to restore general holistic balance in body, mind and spirit. There is no competitive stake to it, there are no extremes or high-intensity actions involved. But we do play gently with our personal comfort zones, sliding in and out, at times challenging our personal beliefs, convictions and limitations. These edges are where the real learning takes place, so take note.
The sessions have powerful therapeutic value. They are developed, customised and guided by specialised trauma therapist Ken Christiaens. All exercises, while feeling light and fun, have a foundation in trauma and tension-releasing therapies, with elements of inner child work, constellations, reiki, NLP, somatic work, role/game play and meditation. Nature's increased healing potential (forest bathing) is fully being harnessed here.
For more info on the therapeutic practice of Ken, please visit: www.nieuwegrond.be
PRACTICAL
The Forest Play-session starts at 10h sharp and ends at 12h. It costs 18e to participate.
Meeting and end-point is always Parking Forest Playground Everzwijnbad, Weertsedreef 8-10, Oud-Heverlee (please read location description well, Google Maps can be a bit tricky).
You actually might get a bit dirty and sweaty at some point, please prepare for outdoor nature workout: sporty shoes with ribs, sporty clothes, maybe a small towel (feet might get dirty or wet) or anything you feel comfortable with.
Regarding the payment:
You will be asked to transfer 18e to Ken's account beforehand or bring it on the day itself.
Your participation is only confirmed if you have confirmed the payment as well.
The event will be cancelled only when the weather really doesn't allow it.
If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask via personal message.
We hope to see and connect with you there!

Sci-Fi Leuven: "What If We All Get Chipped?" Workshop w/ Charlotte Parion
Welcome to the IHL's Sci-fi book and movie club.
Exceptionally, this month's event is about Microchip Implants with a workshop titled "What If We All Get Chipped?" led by Charlotte Parion, a PhD student from KUL.
In her words:
You will be invited to a 2-hours workshop (might be less) in which we will investigate the potential future implications of the widespread implantation of microchips or other technologies (the scenario in question will be presented at the start of the session) in human bodies for non-medical purposes.
This makes part of my PhD project where I study the (future) use and societal implications of non-medical implants. I aim to shed light on how to implement these technologies in a way that contributes to building a fairer society and increasing people’s well-being in work and life. This study should allow us to better understand the positive and negative long-term implications of human enhancement (and insertables in particular) and what policy-makers, employers, technology producers, researchers and citizens need to be mindful about when envisioning the development of these emerging technologies.
During the workshop, you will be confronted to a scenario of a future society where most people have microchips or other technologies implanted under their skin. It will be written in a circle on a large sheet of paper. You will then be asked to think (and write down around the circle), in groups of 4-6 people, about the potential implications it can have from a social, political, economic, legal, environmental, ... point of view (both positive and negative implications). For every consequence identified, each group will then be asked to identify and write down the consequences that would ensue from this first set of consequences. There will then be a final round of iteration to identify even longer-term consequences. This is called the Futures Wheel method.
At the end of the workshop, you will be able to present your thinking to the other groups and reflect on each group’s contribution.
The discussions will take place in English. Are you wondering how Thomas (as a moderator) will go about with the discussions? See books&babble’s very helpful guidelines:[ https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-52rt7q9pVWTwgBhhbCxymrrD6b-q3De/view?usp=sharing](https://antispam.leuven.be/fmlurlsvc/?fewReq=:B:JVMxOj47MS19NjklOy1ibzY7OjE7Oi14Ymxlan9+eW42aDk4Pj4/O2g4OTxqOm5pODppOG85PG5qPjg6OD48Mj87aj46OTs/PC1/Njo9PD47Ojs7OzgtemJvNjg7X0xcZG0zOzg6Oj88Jjg7X0xcZG1KOzg6Oj88LXloe382SmVlaiVfeWJ7e0tnbn59bmUlaW4taDY5Py1jb2c2Ow==&url=https%3A%2F%2Fdrive.google.com%2Ffile%2Fd%2F1-52rt7q9pVWTwgBhhbCxymrrD6b-q3De%2Fview%3Fusp%3Dsharing)
Registration is required so we know how many people to expect.
If you sign up and can no longer come, PLEASE let us know in advance. This is a volunteer initiative and it is important to respect their time put into organization and preparation.

We meet to learn and practice American Sign Language and to grow our familiarity with Deaf culture. Facilitated by hearing folks (with a connection to a professional interpreter) using Deaf-created content. People of all ASL skill levels are welcome! As we learn, we hope to connect more with the Deaf community in Central Ohio. Join us as you're able!
Come regularly or just once - whatever you're looking for! Each meetup will explore different topics related to ASL/Deaf culture, and will feature time to practice conversation with one another. Just bring yourself and a willingness to learn!
