Le film est une élégie visuelle et sonore qui entrelace les peintures ex-voto de Hu Jiamin et les événements sociaux et personnels (pandémie, manifestations, résistance, exil, son arrestation en Chine en 2017, son voyage en Russie en 2025 etc.) avec lesquels ses peintures sont associées, de manière complexe, nuancée, poétique et humoristique. Beaucoup d’enfants d’immigrés portent en eux des histoires de sacrifices, d’exil, d’attentes familiales et de loyauté invisible. Dans ce contexte, choisir sa propre voie peut parfois s’accompagner d’un sentiment profond de culpabilité. Choisir sa vie. Choisir ses rêves. Choisir une direction différente. Ou simplement se choisir soi-même. Et pourtant, ce choix peut parfois nous donner l’impression de trahir, de décevoir ou de s’éloigner de ceux qui ont tout donné pour nous.
