Naarm Solarpunk: Reclaiming the Internet for Humans
The Naarm Solarpunk Meetup presents this special event to kick-off 2026.
Our two speakers will take you through the high hopes that many of us had for the impact of the web on society, and the reality of corporate enshittified platforms that are destroying our ability to connect with our communities while building every more polluting data-centers.
Please join us for an interesting evening as we walk through these ideas and meet like-minded people who care about using technology in service of **Sustainable**, **Resilient** and **Just** futures.
**Reclaiming the Open Web**
[Milly Schmidt](https://www.millyschmidt.me/)
In the 2000s, a generation of nerds got online and found a wonderful place where you could learn to code, make things, share your art, be part of communities and feel welcomed. We blogged, we vlogged, we shared, we posted, we followed and we were followed. We found a beautiful world where we could connect with our friends and make new ones, all across the globe, and find the people who liked the same things we liked and feel less alone. We signed up for platform after platform, excited about the promise of a hyper-personalised web, where we would see recommendations and content based on our specific interests. We knew there might be some risks, but we thought it was worth it. In the 20 years or so since then, things have changed. The platforms that once connected us have mutated, transformed under a grim late capitalist ethos to be not just extractive, but no longer even for us.
How do we get out of this mess? How do we find our way back to the promises of the early web, where we could connect with communities, friends and family, find joy and creativity and learning? And more importantly, what principles should we hold to ensure we don't make these mistakes again?
**Neighbourhood-First Software**
[Jade Ambrose](https://jade.hopepunk.me/)
A vibrant ecosystem of open-source alternatives to big tech walled gardens is a critical part of building the free and open internet that we want, but technical requirements mean that this software is often only run by a small group of skilled enthusiasts.
Neighbourhood-First software is hosted in cycling distance of your house, by volunteers in your local community, for the benefit of those less technical. In this talk, Jade will present a manifesto of Neighbourhood-First software, and discuss how it can help support local-first software, the Fediverse, and other key open source initiatives while also providing local resilience in an age of climate uncertainty.
\-\-\-
These talks were both previously given at Everything Open 2026, and don't require technical knowledge.
We will provide some plant-based nibbles. Probably not enough for dinner, please feel free to bring anything of your own that you'd like to eat.
This event will be hosted on the stolen, unceeded lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. **Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.**
**Accessibility info:**
Balam Balam place is wheelchair accessible via lift. Wide corridors and accessible toilets are situated on each level. The grounds are entirely accessible via flat concrete paths and ramps.
Mask wearing is very welcome. Our speakers will be unmasked while presenting.
Please let us know if there's anything we can do to help you feel more able to attend this event.

Journal/ Craft Meet Up
My aim is to bring together a like-minded community to junk journal and craft alongside one another, in a low pressure environment.🧵🎨
While I deeply love analogue, hands-on creative practices — and recognise how personal they can be — they can also lead us to spending *too* much time alone. I think many of us can feel that sense of community and connection slowly slipping away.
I feel passionate about bringing creativity and community together. There is a real hunger for spaces where people can gather, make, and simply be — together.
I want to create a group where you can bring whatever you’re currently working on creatively. Whether that’s junk journalling or another craft practice, the focus is on coming together and creating collectively.
There is an open invitation to share your work if you feel called to, but absolutely no pressure — this is a gentle, supportive space first and foremost.
This space is shaped by the understanding of how powerful creativity can be when held in community and I hope for us to build one together.
Remember: you are welcome exactly as you are 🌱
just bring along whatever you're working on and some supplies!💞
I hope to see you & create something simple and beautiful🌸
Location: Melbourne Botanical Gardens, Near 'The Observatory.'
Please remember to change your availability on the RSVP - if you change your mind last minute, otherwise I won't know who to check for :)
Origami and Chocolate
Join us for a relaxing time of folding together at the Ratio chocolate factory in Brunswick! Bring a fun origami project to fold and share, all while sipping on delectable hot chocolate! Standard origami paper will be provided. We just ask for a gold coin to help with group expenses.
February Book Club - Churros in the burbs
Come meet us at our first suburban meetup of 2026!
For those of you who may be joining us for the first time, we have no set reading list, "homework" or assigned book. We want to hear about what you like to read! Come along and **tell us about up to four** of your recently read and/or to be read books and hear about what we're all reading too!
Whilst we encourage all readers, given the nature of the discussions that we have our meetups aren't suitable for children under the age of 14.
**Please note that as advised in our email and post of November 14th 2024 our fees have increased from $5.00 to $6.50 per person per meetup. This is due to [Meetup.com](http://meetup.com/) doubling the organiser fees for meetup groups. We now pay at least $50 a month to have a Meetup site (unfortunately this cost fluctuates due to Meetup charging us in USD). All fees go towards paying the meetup fees. This can only be accepted via the Meetup site and we do not accept cash on the day.**
Similarly, if you are planning to attend, please RSVP on the Meetup site. RSVPs can be made right up until the moment the event starts, we are unable to accept cash on the day or attendances from those who have not RSVPd as we need to plan for attendance numbers and space.
We also ask that you purchase something from San Churro on the day as we are taking up their space.
Please don't hesitate to contact us if you've got any questions. Happy reading and see you then!

Bad Girls Book Club February 2026
**Our February novel is: Julia by Sandra Newman**
**This month is a classic, dystopian, fiction, literary fiction, women’s fiction, and science fiction novel. The book is 394 pages in print and 14 hours and 20 minutes on audiobook.**
**An imaginative, feminist, and brilliantly relevant-to-today retelling of Orwell’s 1984, from the point of view of Winston Smith’s lover, Julia, by critically acclaimed novelist Sandra Newman.**
Julia Worthing is a mechanic, working in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. It’s 1984, and Britain (now called Airstrip One) has long been absorbed into the larger trans-Atlantic nation of Oceania. Oceania has been at war for as long as anyone can remember, and is ruled by an ultra-totalitarian Party, whose leader is a quasi-mythical figure called Big Brother. In short, everything about this world is as it is in Orwell’s 1984.
All her life, Julia has known only Oceania, and, until she meets Winston Smith, she has never imagined anything else. She is an ideal citizen: cheerfully cynical, always ready with a bribe, piously repeating every political slogan while believing in nothing. She routinely breaks the rules, but also collaborates with the regime when necessary. Everyone likes Julia.
Then one day she finds herself walking toward Winston Smith in a corridor and impulsively slips him a note, setting in motion the devastating, unforgettable events of the classic story. Julia takes us on a surprising journey through Orwell’s now-iconic dystopia, with twists that reveal unexpected sides not only to Julia, but to other familiar figures in the 1984 universe. This unique perspective lays bare our own world in haunting and provocative ways, just as the original did almost seventy-five years ago.

February Book Club Meetup
Welcome, readers!
Our February read is **_1984 by George Orwell._**
In 1984, George Orwell imagines a world where the government watches everyone, rewrites reality, and punishes even private thoughts. Winston Smith dares to question this system, believing that truth and love might still exist. His rebellion draws him into a chilling struggle against a power that knows him better than he knows himself. The novel leaves readers asking whether freedom is possible when reality itself can be controlled.
Looking forward to discussing with everyone!
We will meet at Zaftig Brewing Co in their event room in the back. We are welcome to bring in our own food, but **drinks must be purchased at the bar.**
Happy reading! 📖
