Dr Pat Wallace lecture on Wood Quay
***Come and hear about the exciting finds from the excavations at Wood Quay from the very man, Dr. Pat Wallace, who led the excavations***.
#### 28.01.2026, 18:00 P.M.
Between 1974 and 1981, the excavations at Wood Quay and Fishamble Street in Dublin transformed our understanding of Viking and Anglo-Norm an Ireland. Led by Dr Pat Wallace, these groundbreaking digs uncovered the house types, town layout, and waterfronts of medieval Dublin, offering an unprecedented glimpse into the city’s early development. Dr Wallace will reflect on the Wood Quay excavations, where the distinctive dwellings and street patterns of Viking Dublin, along with the waterfront structures of the succeeding Anglo-Norman period, were revealed. Now, just over 50 years since he first began work on the site in 1974, it is a fitting moment to revisit the discoveries—and the often controversial circumstances—in which the excavations took place. Following his success at Wood Quay, Dr Wallace went on to serve as Director of the National Museum of Ireland for 24 years, overseeing major expansions and championing the preservation of Ireland’s cultural heritage.

Dr Horan has agreed to share his expertise in conversation with our Socrates Cafe participants; he will help us to better appreciate the culture, the time and place, occupied by Socrates and his star student, Plato. How did what has now become known as the *Socratic Method* of Inquiry develop? In a world that desperately needs the art of serious inquiry and critical thinking, how can we practice this method well? Expand your horizons with this evening discussion at Third Space.
Space is limited so please sign up only if intending to attend.
NOTE: there will be a 3 Euro fee to cover costs. Payable on the night by coin or Revolut.

Networking for founders, creators, freelancers + rebels ⚡
**Rebel Events: Scaling Without Selling Out**
**The Clock Tower, Harbourmaster, Dublin 1**
**Wednesday 28 January, 6:15pm to 9pm**
**Overview**
Starting and growing a business in Ireland is exciting, but it is also hard, messy and often lonely. Most founder events either glamorise success or focus on pitching and funding, leaving very little space for honest conversation.
Join us at Harbourmaster for an open, relaxed night of networking and real talk for Dublin based founders, freelancers and start-up operators who are actively building something. Whether you are working out of a co-working space, running your first product or growing a small team, this is a room full of people who understand what that actually looks like.
Come for the conversations, stay for the connections and leave with a clearer sense that you are not doing this on your own.
**What you will get**
• Meet other founders, builders and creatives in Dublin
• Hear honest stories from people actually doing the work
• Learn how to grow sustainably, not just fast
• Walk away with clarity, not overwhelm
• Make connections that go beyond business cards
**Speakers**

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for February is "Transitions"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
Shut Up & Write!® East Side Columbus
Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 11 at Streetlight Guild.
Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done.
**SCHEDULE:**
6:45ish - Quick introductions
7:00 - Timer starts: write for 1 hour
8:00 - The End
**OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING** happens before and after the writing hour. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing.
**BEING LATE IS OKAY:** just show up and get settled! If you were on time, please be willing to make room for the friendly latecomer.
Happy writing & I look forward to seeing you at Streetlight Guild!
**WHAT SHOULD I BRING?**
Whatever you need to be able to write! You're welcome to bring earplugs/headphones if noise will bother you!
**OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS:**
* **RSVP:** Please RSVP by 6:00pm the evening of the meeting. This helps me know how many to expect, and if we'll need additional space!
* **COVID:** While masks are not required, please be mindful of the other writers around you and their comfort levels.
* **WIFI/OUTLETS:** Outlets are limited, so please ensure your devices are charged when you come! But Streetlight Guild does have free WiFi! Yay!
