Wineberry Day, Berry Sweet Ecosystem Management
Wineberry Day, Berry Sweet Ecosystem Management
It's that time of year again! Join VOF Preserve Staff in the annual collection and manual destruction of the non-native wineberry bush. This tasty but invasive plant needs removal so that our native plants can thrive, and we need your help! In the process, the collection of the edible berries is encouraged to prevent the spread of seeds. Wineberry, *Rubus phoenicolasius*, is closely related to the native raspberry, *Rubus strigosus* and they make pretty good muffins. This year, we are including a recipe for preserves as well. This is at your own risk, and the Virginia Outdoors Foundation claims no responsibility for the ingestion of this fruit, so please consume at your discretion. Where: We'll meet at the trailhead by the kiosk at the end of Beverly Mill Drive When: We're starting a little earlier than we normally do for hikes (8:30!) so we can beat the heat and eat the berries! Bring: leather gloves (wineberry has thorns,) water, and collection containers. Also bring insect / tick repellent and hiking shoes. Friendly reminder that this is the only forageable that is allowed to be consumed or removed from the preserve, and other tasty plants and mushrooms need to remain here. Looking forward to a fun and fruitful day of ecosystem management! Please email dreif@vof.org if you have any questions. Hope to see you there!

This is a good chance to sharpen your identification skills or see something new! **What to bring:** Insect / tick repellent, water, snacks, binoculars, and hiking shoes. **Where is it:** The public south section of the preserve, located at the end of Beverly Mill Drive. We'll meet near the kiosk board at the trailhead **When:** 5:30 AM The early bird gets the worm. The late hiker gets to catch up to the group! **Who to Contact for Questions**: Deneith Reif, at dreif@vof.org If you're adventurous enough to wake up early on a weekend, you will be rewarded with a dawn chorus and a chance to glimpse some special birds! PS: Please leave your canine companions at home for this and any hike at the preserve.
Beaverdam Reservoir Park & Lark Brewing Co.
Beaverdam Reservoir Park & Lark Brewing Co.
We will be hiking the loop trail, (counter clockwise) around the BeaverDam Reservoir starting at the brand new Reservoir Park VisitorsCenter. Beautiful views of the water and varied woodland areas. This is an 7.5 MILE loop hike around one of Northern Virginia's largest bodies of water. The loop is mainly flat with a tiny hill or two. I've rated the loop moderate because the distance is 7.5 miles and we will be hiking about 22 minutes per mile - just under 3 miles per hour. After the hike we'll head over to Lark Brewing. 24205 James Monroe Hwy, Aldie, VA 20105 for food and beverages. I will make every effort for your safety. You are hiking at your own risk. Dogs are welcome on the hike as long as they are good with groups, friendly and you follow all leash laws. I like kids but this is an adult event so please no kids or any one under 21. We do start on time so please plan accordingly. Meet in front of the bathrooms by the parking lot.
