This month we’ll be reading Herland! It is the second book in a trilogy (but it stands alone as well), and you don’t need to read the first and third books (unless you want to!). Here is the description from Storygraph: Herland is a utopian novel from 1915, written by feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The book describes an isolated society composed entirely of women, who reproduce via parthenogenesis (asexual reproduction). The result is an ideal social order: free of war, conflict, and domination. It was first published in monthly installments as a serial in 1915 in The Forerunner, a magazine edited and written by Gilman between 1909 and 1916, with its sequel, With Her in Ourland beginning immediately thereafter in the January 1916 issue. The book is often considered to be the middle volume in her utopian trilogy; preceded by Moving the Mountain (1911), and followed by, With Her in Ourland (1916). It was not published in book form until 1979.

For many, this is a must-see place since it is great for landscape photography. Of course, there are other genres like wildlife and birds such as great blue herons, turkey vultures, and others to photograph. The park does not open until 7:00 AM and WIFI is not available. Cell phone service is spotty. An eBird group surveys these wonderful birds every Sunday at 8:00 AM, except during the Christmas Count. Check the eBird list for updates.** **The Group parks in the first lot just past the Visitor Center on the right and walks south toward the Visitor Center then continues down to the three overlooks. Access to the first overlook is not for the faint of heart since the terrain is rocky but it is worth it because it provides a clear view going upstream of the Potomac River. Sometimes, the Group photographs kayakers as they travel up and down the falls.** **The second overlook has easier access to the river and the falls. The third overlook has a couple of sections that have views over the river. Kayakers and birds are visible from this overlook. Park visitors have been known to climb down the rocks to the river, but it is not recommended as it is dangerous. Neufeld, retired senior curator for the Space History Department of the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Gain an understanding of how Artemis II fits in both past and planned lunar missions with historian Michael Neufeld, who was lead curator of the Smithsonian’s Destination Moon exhibit. He has taught at Johns Hopkins, Colgate, and other universities, and is the author or editor of nine books dealing with the history of technology. He’ll start by looking at the aftermath of the Apollo program of a half century ago and why it ended only four years after its first lunar mission. He’ll consider why no lasting lunar programs emerged from major announcements by two presidents, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, that astronauts would be going back to the Moon and on to Mars. His vividly illustrated lecture will then explore how Artemis is a product of a human spaceflight program that has changed dramatically over the past 50 years. We’ll look at how collaboration with Europe, Canada and Japan became integral to the shuttle and International Space Station programs, and how the rise of new commercial space companies such as SpaceX has enabled NASA to buy both space services and space craft. Both international and commercial partners are involved in the latest Moon efforts, with SpaceX and Blue Origin expected to supply the landers to take astronauts down to a planned base on the Moon’s South Pole. How soon will any of this happen? Probably not as quickly as NASA says, but the specter of a Chinese landing on the Moon by 2030 is one obvious reason to keep things moving along. We’ll look at the sustainability of the Artemis space program for at least the next decade or so. You’ll emerge from the talk with no doubt that exciting days are ahead for space fans.
