Profs & Pints DC: What We Know About Snow
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **āWhat We Know About Snow,ā** a meteorologistās take on the science of snow and snowstorm prediction, with Jeffrey Halverson, professor of geography and environmental systems at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and author of *An Introduction to Severe Storms and Hazardous Weather.*
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-know-snow](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-know-snow) .]
Will the weather outside be frightful? Get answers where itās delightful. Penn Social is the place to go to learn of snow, learn of snow, learn of snow.
Regardless of whether youāre a winter sports enthusiast who welcomes blizzards or someone who spends the season dreaming of an escape to the tropics, you can gain a much deeper understanding of the white stuff with the help of Dr. Jeffrey Halverson, a severe storm expert with the *Washington Post*ās Capital Weather Gang who gave an excellent Profs and Pints talk on hurricanes in November.
A seasoned meteorologist and snow forecaster, heāll discuss how and when snow is formed, describe the different types of snow out there, and tell you what determines whether the atmosphere generates snow as opposed to sleet or freezing rain. Youāll learn the difference between a nuisance āAlberta Clipperā snow event and a blockbuster East Coast snowstorm, and why some winter seasons feature memorableāif not historicalāsnowstorms while others have just small snow events or experience āsnow drought.ā
Youāll gain an appreciation of how the science of snowfall is nuanced and differs markedly in the Mid Atlantic compared to other notoriously snowy regions such as the Great Lakes āsnowbeltā or the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada. Youāll learn the pitfalls and common traps that people fall into in trying to predict snowfall using the data from numerical weather prediction models readily available today to casual users.
Dr. Halverson will tackle the debate over whether the American or European weather prediction models do a better job and discuss Artificial Intelligenceās entry into the forecast game. Accounts of the Washington D.C. regionās most historic snowstorms will be sprinkled in for good measure. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Books and Chill
Everyoneās heard of book clubs where the group reads the same thing and gets together to discuss, which is great⦠if you have time and interest in whateverās chosen. This is a different type of book club where you bring whatever youāre currently or recently reading (or just a book youāre super excited about) and talk about it with fellow book lovers.
Weāll start with people arriving/ordering food between 615-645, then go around and introduce ourselveslves and give a very brief synopsis of what weāre reading and why weāre excited (or not!) about it. Then devolve into informal conversations until people need to head out.
The goal Is to create community and connections in a group of strangers - to facilitate this please make sure you have at least a clear first name on your profile.
Upside on Moore has a great selection of food you can order from your phone or at the kiosks. Thereās also a bar with happy hour, something for everyone!
Arrival tips: if youāre taking the metro, itās the building above the Rosslyn exit. If youāre driving, you can park in the public lot under the food hall (entrance from the one way bus street) and validate parking after 6!

Improv Workshop
Come join local improv troupe, the ***Home Improv Mints***, as we run through some of the basics of short form improv. Wear clothes you can move around in.
We will start at **7:15**. We will run until just after 9 pm. Bring yourself and a willingness to try new things - like (insert audience suggestion here)!
We try a different topic each session to see if it changes who sees the announcement. There might not be bobwhite imitations, hyena butter, lava floors, trans livestock, thalidomide twinkies or inflatable turnips (all things that HAVE come up), but we can promise something *random*.
But we encourage you to bring cookies. NOM NOM NOM!
We only have so many slots available. **Please don't RSVP as a yes *until* you are certain.** We limit the class size so everyone gets a chance to play, and ask for RSVPs so we know how many outlines to print and cookies to bring.
We understand things change sometimes. Please message us if things change and you can't make it, rather than being a No-Show. Multiple No-shows get you put on the naughty list and may get you ejected from the group. Please don't make us do that.
Please donate - *running* a Meetup group ain't free folks. Suggested Donation is $10/session. And feel free to bring more cookies. Everybody likes cookies.
We will have the full space for this session. Come prepared to move. :)
Hope to see you then!

Profs & Pints DC: Japanese Ghost Stories
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **āJapanese Ghost Stories,ā** with Brittany Warman, former instructor at Ohio State University and co-founder of the Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-japanese-ghost-stories]( https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-japanese-ghost-stories) .]
Spend a winter night feeling chills down your spine. Join folklorist Brittany Warman, a favorite of Profs and Pints audiences, for a look at the eerie ghost stories of Japan.
Youāll get acquainted with several spirits and creatures that populate traditional Japanese folklore, among them: The *Yuki-Onna,* the sinister snow woman who dances on a knife-edge between murder and mercy. A fabulously beautiful samurai daughter who demands bravery and intellect from her future husbandābut actually just might be a goblin. The spirit that haunts the cherry blossom tree, whose irresistible melancholy is āthe phantom light of long-expired suns.ā
Youāll also learn about the incredible life of Koizumi Yakumo, the storyteller who first made these traditional tales available to western audiences and helped popularize them around the world. Born in 1850 under the name of Lafcadio Hearn to an Irish officer-surgeon and a Greek woman, he led a wildly unconventional life. He travelled from Greece to the slums of Dublin to the newspaper offices of Cincinnati to the kitchens of New Orleans before settling in Japan, where he adopted Japanese citizenship and changed his name.
His life as a permanent outsiderāand the hatred of prejudice instilled in him by itāshaped him as a storyteller. He became both a conduit of Japanese culture and a champion of the chilling and uncanny.
This deep dive in his life and the ghost stories he gathered and retold will be by turns frightening, hilarious, baffling, and poignant, and will make you understand why his tales remain beloved in Japan and the world over. Itās a great opportunity to become familiar with the ghosts of a nation and the man who told them to the world. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.)

Speak Easy (Storytelling)
The topic for January is "Chemistry"
Speak Easy: true stories, told live.
The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 7:00 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast.
Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect.
The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience. Speak Easy is also a great outlet for performers, writers, and artists looking to share their favorite stories and perfect their skills. We strongly encourage tellers to please tell the story rather than read it so we keep within the spirit of good storytelling and stay engaged with the audience. All are welcome. Hang around after the show for a drink and build community!
Humanist Program
Our January program is privileged to have Kristen Tregar as our speaker. Ms. Tregar is the co-author with John de Lancie (the actor who portrayed the character Q on Star Trek next generation) of a radio play depicting the events surrounding the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. The trial decided the issue of some of the Dover school district board members attempting to insert creationism disguised as "intelligent design" into the 9th grade biology curriculum. She will discuss the trial and the process of writing the play. (Bob Leonhard has seen the play and it is riveting and tense). Ms. Tregar's bio is below:
Kristen Tregar is a dramaturg, director, playwright, and theatre teacher. She earned her Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre from the UC San Diego and UC Irvine joint program. In addition, she has a MS in Forensic Science from City University of New York- John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a MA in Educational Theatre from New York University- Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. In 2013, in collaboration with Irish colleagues, she founded *The Ireland Project*, an intercontinental devised theatre work with high school students in New York and Tallaght, Ireland. Her original short story "Far From Here" was recently published in *Stay Awhile Longer: More Scenes From Temecula Valley*. She has two rescued dogs (Kira and Harry) and she rides, competes, and foxhunts with her horses, Andromache and Baker Street Irregular.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online
