This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. **General Meeting Agenda** Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: * 19:00-19:15 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the ‘official' start. * 19:15-19:25 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines. * 19:25-20:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. It remains a source of debate whether a general principle of *accessory liability* exists in private law, and if it does, how it should be conceptualized. Accessory liability has been broadly understood as liability imposed on a person because of their participation or involvement in someone else’s primary wrong. Because accessory liability is conditional on another person’s breach of legal duty, accessory liability seemingly sits in tension with *corrective justice* theories of private law which emphasize the bilateral relationship between a duty-bearer and correlative right-holder. I examine these theoretical issues and evaluate previous theories of accessory liability in private law. Specifically, I analyze the doctrinal and theoretical challenges that accessory liability in private law creates for a corrective justice theory of private law, as well as the limitations of existing justificatory accounts of accessory liability doctrines in the private law context. Hey Toronto Elixir, Winter is in full swing in Toronto and we are back for our first meetup of 2026! This event will be **BOTH in person and online**! The hybrid format has been pretty successful so we are very excited to, once again, bring together local Torontonians and people from all over the world that we met during the online only meetups! First, we're excited to welcome **Francesco Cesarini,** Founder of Erlang Solutions and author of Erlang Programming and Designing for Scalability with Erlang/OTP (https://github.com/francescoc). He'll be joining us in person for his talk **Thinking Concurrency: Dwelling in Erlang and Elixir.** The functional paradigm has been influencing mainstream languages for decades, making developers more efficient whilst helping reduce maintenance costs. As we are faced with a programming model that needs to scale on multi-core architectures and distributed environments, concurrency becomes critical. In these concurrency models, immutability, a key feature of functional programming paradigm will become even more evident. To quote Simon Peyton Jones, future concurrent languages will be functional; they might not be called functional, but the features will be. At this meetup, we will be discussing why! Next up, **Ben Schultzer** will present **SQL - An exploration of foreign language integration in Elixir** where he'll take a closer look at the state-of-the-art in database connection pools and disprove 30 years of dogma. Here’s how it works: Jennifer brings her mobile app project, tells everyone that it is like Pinterest for recipes and she’d like to work on the nav bar. Paul and Chloe think Jennifer's project is fascinating, and they join the group. They gather around Jennifer’s laptop and work on the nav bar for 2 hours. Jennifer is the one typing out the code while Paul and Chloe research, brainstorm, and offer suggestions. If you’re feeling stuck on your own project or need a motivation boost, bring it to mob programming! Want to learn by watching how others code and solve problems? Members are placed into groups of three or four based on their language level. Each 45 minute session consists of friendly casual conversation, and/or informal study. Optional Dinner : After the Language event, we usually go for Dinner. Dinner is optional, you may or may not join the Dinner, it depends on you. However, Dinner is only for Participants that joined on the day of the event. Event Location: Atrium Food Court The food court is directly connected to the Dundas subway station. Leave the subway station and walk west along Dundas Street. At the intersection of Bay Street and Dundas Street, you will find an entrance. Proceed down the escalator. The food court is on the basement floor. Please talk to the organizer with the signboard showing TJEX. So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels.
