Community Outing : Strategic Foresight Event
This month, we’re switching things up. Instead of hosting our usual SD Drinks meetup, we’re inviting the group to **attend another event together**:
**Strategic Foresight for Driving Organizational Transformation**, hosted by Rotman BDI.
Strategic foresight i.e. our ability to anticipate and plan for change already comes up often in our SD conversations. This event explores those ideas in practice, with a case study led by the **Centre for Social Innovation**, adding a layer we deeply care about as designers: meaningful impact and tackling complex, wicked problems.
It’s a topic that feels highly relevant to service design, strategy, and systems thinking, and one we know will resonate with the group.
📅 **Date & time:** February 10, 5:30 pm
📍 **Location:** Rotman School of Management, Room 1065
105 St George Street, Toronto, ON M5S 3E6
🎟 **Tickets:** Please register directly via the host’s Eventbrite page
[ https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/strategic-foresight-for-driving-organizational-transformation-tickets-1981007188829](https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/strategic-foresight-for-driving-organizational-transformation-tickets-1981007188829)
**Why join as a group?**
This is a great opportunity to:
* explore a topic deeply relevant to design, strategy, and systems thinking
* be inspired by practical foresight frameworks and perspectives
* connect with others, thinking about long-term impact and change
**How we’re doing this:**
Some of us have already registered and plan to attend together. After the event, we’ll grab a drink nearby to continue the conversation — optional, casual, and very SD Drinks 🍻
If you’d like to coordinate or chat ahead of time, the conversation is happening in our Discord event chat: [https://discord.gg/Qc434j5T](https://discord.gg/Qc434j5T)
Hope you can join us, see you there!
Winterlicious at Auberge du Pommier
**Auberge du Pommier**
Let’s indulge ourselves and have lunch at Auberge and enjoy the reserved, quiet elegance and charm of one of the finest French restaurants in Toronto.
Wood-burning fireplaces enhance the celebration of food at it’s best. They have an impressive wine & tea selection. Please check out the prix fixe menu below. The fixed price for lunch is $55.00 plus tax & gratuity.
There is complimentary parking underground in the YONGE CORPORATE CENTRE, which is normally $20 but since we are a large group, Frederick, a lovely gentleman, informs me it will be complimentary for our members. Please bring your tickets to the restaurant for validation. Kindly note, they are unable to validate above ground parking. Also, the amenities are wheel chair accessible. There is a dress code. Business casual is preferred.
There will be a charge of **$25.00 with your RSVP** which will be returned to you upon attendance since that is what my credit card will be dinged if you don’t show. Please e-transfer with your rsvp by January 28th.
**Auberge du Pommier** is fabulous and a must visit for Summer or Winterlicious. We have been here before and those that went thoroughly enjoyed.
*To retain your seat and confirm your rsvp please e-transfer **$25.00** to me **at cindyiamcanadian@gmail.com by January 28th.** It will be returned upon attendance. Free ESL Practice and Support
St. Timothy's is excited to offer support to newcomers in Canada. Our goal is to provide conversational language practice through informal instruction and feedback, alongside emotional and practical assistance.
We invite all new immigrants, English language students, visitors to Canada, parents of children temporarily attending schools in Toronto, foreign university students, and anyone looking to enhance their language skills. We aim to build a welcoming community where friendships can flourish, help participants establish meaningful connections, learn about life in Toronto, and access practical resources like resume and interview preparation, shopping tips, and guidance on setting up home services or navigating government offices.
We begin every Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with a time to socialize and connect. Our formal program begins at 10:30 a.m., and each week we will have different activities and topics, including practicing English conversation, reading short articles, learning about common pronunciation and grammar mistakes made by ESL speakers, etc. Our volunteers would love to get to know you and offer gentle and constructive feedback to help you improve your English!
We also offer Individual career mentoring, including job search, mock job interviews, and helping you improve your resumes and cover letters.

Drama Class - Exploring the Shadow
I warmly invite you to a drama-therapy–inspired workshop exploring the shadow—often called our “dark side”—including emotions such as anger, fear, sadness, fear, hatred, and despair.
Using characters, monologues, scenes, object work, and guided exploration, we’ll learn how to meet and express these inner states rather than suppress or be controlled by them.
While we explore shadow, we’ll also journey toward your Light side—the compassionate, patient, self-aware, and wise aspects of you that support clarity and peace of mind. The session begins with centering, grounding, and safety-building, connecting with the pure consciousness within as a stable foundation for the work.
You’re welcome to bring an object, poem, monologue, character, theme, or scene, or request a suggested one.
This workshop is for you if you want to:
• Befriend your shadow while integrating shadow and light
• Regulate strong emotions and inner conflicts with greater awareness
• Explore fears, doubts, and relationships creatively and meaningfully
Session structure includes:
1. Trust- and safety-building, centering, and connection
2. Physical, emotional, and vocal warm-up with object work
3. Personal theme exploration, reflection, integration, and closing
Facilitation approach:
I create a safe, inclusive, welcoming—yet courageous—environment, inviting exploration without judgment, prejudice, or bias. Care, consent, curiosity, and respect guide the process.
Facilitator:
Nikolai Afanasev — educator, learning experience designer, and actor.
MEd in Curriculum, Pedagogy, Wellbeing & Contemplative Education (University of Toronto, OISE).
7+ years of meditation practice; facilitated 400+ workshops and 25+ retreats across Ontario and Québec.
Not a licensed therapist; currently working toward accreditation.
📩 DM me to touch base about your theme, request suggested material, or reserve a spot.
Warm wishes,
Nikolai

Algorithmic Racism: De-coding Bias in A.I. Facial Recognition Technology
Facial recognition technology (FRT) is increasingly deployed across both public and private sectors – from policing, immigration, and administrative enforcement to loss-prevention in the retail industry – under claims of efficiency, objectivity, and technological neutrality. This presentation challenges those claims by advancing the concept of algorithmic racism: the structural embedding of racial hierarchy into ostensibly neutral algorithmic systems through biased data, design choices, institutional incentives, and opaque deployment practices. Drawing on documented wrongful arrests in the United States, Federal Court litigation in Canada involving refugee-status revocations, and the growing use of FRT in commercial settings, the presentation demonstrates how FRT disproportionately misidentifies Black individuals, particularly Black women.
The presentation situates the well-documented racial bias in FRT within a longer historical arc, arguing that contemporary FRT mirrors the exclusionary logic of the Jim Crow era – reproducing systemic racial hierarchy through ostensibly neutral technological systems. Framed as a modern continuation of past forms of racialized control, FRT operates not through explicit racial classification but through code, data, and automated decision-making. The presentation contends that, absent robust legal safeguards, transparency, and meaningful accountability, the deployment of facial recognition technologies risks entrenching algorithmic racism across both state and market institutions, underscoring the need for urgent regulatory intervention.

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Compensation Data
**People Analytics 101: Making Sense of Compensation Data**
Compensation data is one of the most widely used and widely misunderstood forms of people analytics.
The session will cover where compensation data comes from, including market pricing data, internal payroll data, and benchmarking sources, and how companies think about structuring and analyzing that information. We will explore how compensation data is leveraged to set salary ranges, manage internal equity, support hiring and retention, and align pay with business strategy. A portion of the session will address common data challenges and limitations, such as market noise, inconsistent job matching, and incomplete datasets, while keeping the primary focus on practical use rather than technical depth.
The session will also look ahead at where the space is going, including the growing impact of pay transparency laws, expanding pay equity requirements, and emerging regulations in the US and Europe that require organizations to report on gender and pay gaps. The goal is to give attendees a clear mental model for how compensation analytics works today and why getting it right is becoming increasingly critical.
(note: we are back at Rev1 this month!)
