Open philosophical discussion in the heart of Prague
Open philosophical discussion in the heart of Prague
Welcome to the international Café Philo in Prague. We meet every first Saturday of the month in the cosy [Café Millème](https://store11473398.ecwid.com) in the center of Prague. We choose a participant randomly, by lottery, who then has the privilege to determine the topic of our discussion. We will reflect, ponder and exchange arguments until our brains are on fire. Philosophy isn't just something for universities, it is a way to open your mind to new thoughts and questions. No application is necessary, there is no entrance fee and there are no prerequisites for participating, except curiosity and respect for other people. We meet from 17:15 until 18:45 to follow together the white rabbit into the wonderland of philosophy... More information about me under this [link](https://sophonautik.ch/english/).

Saturday running and coffee
Hi All, Come and join us for social running and a coffee! We meet at the main gate of Vystaviste - tram stop Vystaviste Holesovice. We will run in Stromovka. Usually we run around 50mins and it is up to everyone how many kilometres. We welcome all levels of runner. We can all run together or, if there is more of us, we can split into groups and at the end of the run we all meet close to the starting point to go for a coffee to a nice local coffee place (where they also sell cakes and great chocolate). If the weather is great, we can also just sit in one of the outside coffee placces in Stromovka and enjoy the sun. This is where we meet: http://photos2.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/7/7/3/1/600_447930513.jpeg

Prague Teacher’s Meetup Group
Prague Teacher’s Meetup Group
This is an informal event for English speaking teachers. We network, build relationships and exchange ideas. If you’re facing any challenges, than feel free to talk about it with the group. Jeffie has been able to successfully collect payment from a work benefit. If you like to hear about it, free to ask her at the next meetup. As an elementary school teacher I've noticed that Czech schools seem to have less tells for behavior modification than American schools (though generally well behaved students). I would love to hear from other teachers what their behavior modification methods are. I ask for 30 crowns to cover the cost of monthly meet-up groups. I look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. See you soon Aaron
Guided Czech Speaking Session (A2 level)
Guided Czech Speaking Session (A2 level)
I’ve been learning Czech for 4 years, but speaking still feels like my weak spot. I realized it’s not more lessons I need — it’s more real conversation. So if you’re learning Czech and feel a bit stuck, too, I’m putting together a small face-to-face speaking club. No awkward language exchange vibes, No repeating the same topics. **It’s guided by a Czech instructor, relaxed, and practical — all for the price of a coffee ☕️** Why this works 1\. You actively speak\. 2\. Real people\, real reactions\. 3\. Structured\, guided\, efficient 4\. Everyone here gets it\. 5\. A whole month for the price of one lesson\. 💰 60 minutes per session · once a week. Persistence is key! 💰 The first session is **150 CZK**, and then **700 CZK / month** 👩‍🏫 A professional native instructor guides the sessions. 📍 Location: Won Academy - [Křenova 438/1](https://maps.app.goo.gl/RF4sU9LHPCuS8RYk6) (right at the tram/metro station, Petriny) 🔄 After trying a level, it’s possible to switch to a different one if needed. more info: wonacademy.cz/speaking-cz

Drunken
Drunken
This month's prompt concerns the idea of the “warrior philosopher” (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism") Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critique—whether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., “conscript” capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war). Butler’s life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusader—and asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering? See you at Drunken Philosophy!

Humanist Program
Humanist Program
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. We will be hearing from Becca Powell, Director of Advocacy and Outreach at Unchained At Last, an organization whose mission is dedication to ending forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. Unchained At Last's mission clearly meshes and addresses several of our Humanist Ten Commitments. Becca will educate us about an issue many of us may not be familiar with--but should be. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk. Going forward our meetings will be hybrid.
