The People Problems No Founder Sees Coming

### Most founders think scaling is a hiring problem. It’s not, it’s a people problem.
Building and scaling a startup is hard, but turning it into an organisation is where things really start to break.
At around 15 to 30 people, what once felt easy suddenly becomes more complex. Communication slows down, expectations become unclear, performance becomes inconsistent, and founders often find themselves stuck in the middle of everything. Many assume it’s a hiring issue, but in reality it runs deeper.
In this interactive session, we’ll unpack the people challenges founders don’t see coming as they scale, brought to life through real stories, honest reflections, and practical insight from working inside growing organisations.
Through a conversational, interview-style format, we’ll explore five of the most common areas where founders underinvest early, and the impact this has as their companies grow.
This isn’t a lecture. It’s an opportunity to step back, reflect on your own business, learn from others in the room, and leave with practical ideas you can apply immediately, whether you are just starting to build a team or already navigating the pressures of growth.
## About the Speakers:
**Katherine Ray**
Katherine works with founders and senior leaders to identify what actually needs to change in their leadership and people approach before it becomes costly as they scale.
With over 20 years’ experience across early-stage, scaling businesses and large global organisations, she brings a broad and grounded perspective on how people and leadership challenges show up at different stages of growth.
As an executive leadership coach, Katherine focuses on helping leaders build the clarity, capability, and confidence needed to lead effectively as their organisations evolve, while enabling teams to perform during periods of growth, change, and increasing complexity.
**Kuldish Sibia**
Kuldish is a fractional People leader and founder of Scaling People Solutions, with over 20 years of experience across global organisations, scale-ups, and high-growth environments.
He specialises in helping businesses put the right people foundations in place before growth exposes the cracks. From performance challenges to complex people issues, Kuldish brings a practical, no-nonsense perspective on what happens when early decisions start to catch up, and what it takes to fix them.
## What to Expect on the Night:
Doors open at 6:15 PM with a welcome drink and networking.
Starting at 6:45 PM, this 75-minute
interactive session including Q&A will include:
**Real Stories and Insights (Interview Format)**
We’ll explore five key people challenges founders face as they scale, including:
* Creating clarity on roles and expectations
* Investing in people management including performance, feedback, and accountability
* Workforce planning, who you hire, when, and why
* How leadership needs to evolve as your company grows
* Building foundations before tools
Each theme will be brought to life through real examples and honest reflections from working with scaling businesses.
**Founder-to-Founder Discussion**
You’ll have the opportunity to reflect on one of the five key challenges that resonates most with you or is most relevant to your business right now.
Through guided prompts, you’ll explore:
* What’s currently feeling difficult in your organisation
* How this challenge is showing up as you scale
* What you might need to do differently
**Q&A**
A chance to ask questions and explore specific challenges you’re facing.
**Community and Connection**
From 8:00 PM, connect with fellow founders, operators, and builders in a relaxed setting designed for meaningful conversation.
You’ll also have the opportunity to speak with Katherine and Kuldish one-to-one about any specific people or organisational challenges you’re currently navigating.
Doors close at 9:00 PM.
## Who Should Attend:
* Founders and co-founders building and scaling a team
* Leaders in growing companies where things are starting to feel more complex than they should
* Anyone hiring, managing people, and noticing that what worked early on is no longer working
This session is particularly relevant for companies moving beyond the early stage, around 10 to 50 plus people, where people challenges become more visible and more impactful.

**🎤 SPEAKERS 🎤**
**Unchartered territory: From Engineering Manager to Head of Engineering - Natalie Parker, Head Of Engineering at ENSEK**
Making the leap from engineering manager to head of engineering is one of the least-documented transitions in a technical career. There's no shortage of advice for moving from senior engineer to tech lead or engineering manager, yet the step up to senior leadership remains rarely documented. It's also the point when your day to day will likely change most significantly from previous roles.
This talk is the resource I wish I'd had. I'll walk through the five biggest shifts you'll encounter when moving from managing a single team to leading multiple teams and workstreams: where intentional time management becomes non-negotiable, why "disagree and commit" hits differently at this level, how organisational politics become unavoidable, why you'll need a crash course in product, marketing and finance, and why getting your team right is the foundation for everything else.
For each area I'll share practical tips from my own experience, followed by honest advice on how to assess whether this transition is right for you — and how to prepare when the time comes.
Whether you're actively considering a move into senior leadership or simply curious about what could lie ahead, this talk will give you an honest, grounded picture of what the role actually demands.
**Extreme Curiosity: The solution to all of AI's challenges - Andy Huang, Technical Lead at Softwire**
The impact that agentic AI tooling has had on the industry is undeniable, destroying barriers-to-entry and producing immeasurable levels of output. Working applications can be created by non-coders in a matter of minutes in a chat window, and unmanageable numbers of pull requests, issues, and vulnerabilities are demanding the attention of engineers. How does the unrelenting drive to explore digressive questions help us thrive where AI would otherwise threaten our very existence?
**Certainty is an illusion - Mary Gudman, Senior Engineering Manager at ENSEK**
Most engineering leaders have been here: the company is restructuring, the strategy is shifting, and your team is looking to you for answers you don't have. The instinct is either to project confidence you don't feel, or to be radically transparent in a way that destabilises everyone around you. Neither works.
Leading through uncertainty when you're uncertain too is a skill. It can be learned. This is what learning it looked like for me.

MLOps London Signal Night: Agents in Production
You do not need to be deep in MLOps to attend.
If you are a founder building with AI, a recruiter trying to understand what good AI engineering talent looks like, a fractional CTO/advisor, or a newer builder wondering what happens after a demo works, this event is about the real-world jump from prototype to something people can rely on.
MLOps London is moving into its next chapter.
The group has a strong history of practical talks and production-focused conversations. This first event under the new cadence is deliberately simple: a signal night for introductions, production-AI pain points, hiring/fractional CTO needs, and topics people want the community to cover next.
The theme for the next few months is production AI:
* agent systems after the demo
* observability and evaluation
* deployment and rollback
* governance and ownership
* what teams are learning the hard way
No slides. No formal talks. No vendor pitches.
The lightweight format:
* builders mark what they know: agents, evals, observability, infra, deployment, governance, cost, rollback
* founders/recruiters mark what they need: fractional CTO input, hiring signal, architecture review, speaker/topic suggestions
* everyone leaves with a Production AI Bench Card: one useful intro target, one topic/failure mode for the June talk night, and one clear ask or offer
Ram will give a short welcome around 7pm and outline the plan for the June talk night: "AI Agents in Production: What Actually Breaks After the Demo."
Come if you build, deploy, evaluate, operate, hire for, advise on, or lead production AI systems.
Free to attend. Please RSVP with enough detail for us to understand who is in the room.
You should leave with a clearer sense of what breaks first when AI meets real users, what skills matter, what questions founders and recruiters should ask, and who in the room can help.

AI Agents 101: How to Make ChatGPT Do Actual Work
Most people still use AI like a search box: type one question, get one answer, repeat.
But the next step is AI agents: systems that can take a goal, break it into steps, use tools, remember context, and produce useful work for a human to review.
In this beginner-friendly session, we’ll demystify what AI agents actually are — without hype or jargon. We’ll walk through practical examples of how agents can help with research, planning, writing, coding, operations, and personal productivity.
We’ll cover:
* What makes an AI “agent” instead of just a chatbot
* How agents break tasks into steps
* Where agents are genuinely useful today
* Where they fail, hallucinate, or need human review
* How to design simple AI workflows for your own work
* A live demo of an AI agent-style workflow from start to finish
No coding experience required. This is for anyone who wants to understand where AI tools are going and how to use them more effectively right now.
LOGISTICS AND PARKING:
The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks!
The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.
Stop Guessing: A Product Person's Guide to AI Adoption
## 🤝 Host Information
A co-hosted event by ProductTank Columbus & Women in Product Columbus
💡 About the Workshop
AI adoption is stalling across organizations — not because of a lack of motivation or tools, but because it's fundamentally a behavior design challenge.
This hands-on workshop applies proven Behavior Design models and methods to help you move from a vague organizational wish to boost AI adoption to 3-5 concrete, testable interventions you can act on starting tomorrow.
Whether you're a product manager, on a product team, or just someone trying to get AI to actually stick at work, you'll leave with a clear picture of what's worth focusing on, what to ignore, and how to drive real, sustained adoption — no guesswork required.
🛠️ What to Bring
Laptop: Fully charged and ready to go.
AI Assistant: Have your favorite AI assistant pulled up. (Dom will be using Claude, but feel free to use whichever assistant you prefer!)
🍕 Logistics & Perks
Food & Drink: Pizza and drinks provided!

Smart Search + AI: An Outcome-Driven Journey from IDP to a Suite of AI
Over a billion documents processed. Millions of Veterans impacted. Hundreds of thousands of employee hours saved. Faster decisions. Greater accuracy. More benefits in the hands of our disabled Veterans.
We created Smart Search, the world’s largest consumer of Amazon Textract, right when GenAI began reshaping what’s possible. Since then, we’ve built a suite of AI‑driven solutions that transform this data into real, measurable outcomes—accelerating benefits decisions for our Nation’s Veterans.
Join us for a focused conversation on how an outcome‑driven approach to AI is helping us boost accuracy, streamline workflows, and deliver faster results for those who have served.
This is a follow up to the AWS re:Invent 2023 "Intelligent Document Processing with Gen AI for Public Sector" presentation.

AWS Columbus: Smart Search + AI: An Outcome-Driven Journey
Title: Smart Search + AI: An Outcome-Driven Journey from IDP to a Suite of AI
Register at the Columbus AWS meetup: [https://www.meetup.com/columbus-aws-amazon-web-services-meetup/events/313426379/](https://www.meetup.com/columbus-aws-amazon-web-services-meetup/events/313426379/)

Free In-Person Meeting: Get Over Losses & Betrayals, Build Lasting Relationships
This is a free, in-person meeting on the subject of betrayals, losses and how to get over them so you can build lasting relationships.
Burdened by a stressful relationship? Unhealthy relationships can trigger feelings of anger, despair or self-doubt. They can create dwindling spirals of fights and seeking to make-up, or trying to “pin the blame” on someone or something. If you don’t find the RIGHT reasons, or select the correct sources of the problem, the problem can just get worse and worse.
Whether in love or personal ties, with friends or at work, our life really IS affected by the quality of our relationships. Good ones can promote pleasure and survival while less optimum ones can lead to annoyance, anger, self-doubt, stress, or even affect our health and ability to survive well.
Whether you are suffering from a divorce, or a painful break-up, don’t know who to trust (or who to CHOOSE) as a partner, friend, boss or employee - the anxiety of relationship troubles can really make a mess of things. Maybe you’ve suffered a betrayal, or are dealing with hostility or criticalness or invalidation. Dwindling relationships can involve destructive behavior, where we hurt those we love, or start succumbing to self-destructive thoughts, attitudes or behaviors that spiral out of control and affect much more than our immediate relationship.
Past losses in love or life can affect how we act or react to new people and situations and hold us back from even starting to create new, possibly great relationships! How can one get back onto a saner course of action?
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life: human relationships!
Break free from self imposed limitations
Here we will discuss:
• How to “erase” the trauma of past hurts and betrayals so that one isn’t always repeating past mistakes.
• Why and how do the negative emotions of others affect you?
• Why is my partner withdrawing and what can I do about it?
• Why do we sometimes feel compelled to hurt the ones we love?
• Fights & arguments - what's really behind them?
• What underlies “corrosive criticism” or the need to invalidate self or others?
• How one can stably change one’s outlook on life so they can affect positive change?
• Where do compulsive destructive behaviors come from and what can be done about them?
• How to form closer bonds & keep growing the relationships with the people you care about?
• How to enhance one’s own ability to survive and create positive healthy relationships whether in love, family & friendships or in work, business or one’s career?
Relationships can be hard and life itself IS challenging. Why not arm yourself with the knowledge and breakthroughs that have been made about the mind, mental reactions & interpersonal relationships, so that one has better awareness and control over themselves and life in general.
Learn where painful experiences are “stored” and how they can unknowingly affect us. You will also find out how one can “erase” those past painful experiences so that one is free to move forward without being tripped up by the past. Learn too, about what can lead some people to become “toxic” personalities and how to identify those traits in others so you won’t be tripped up trusting the wrong person.
Our free Meet-ups occur in a safe environment where one can learn, without fear of judgment or criticism, and without the recommendation of harmful mental techniques or therapies, just how YOU can get yourself onto a happier & more successful path: in love & in life.
We look forward to having you join us!
This class is sponsored by the Dianetics & Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.
