UX VIENNA at home with Arnold Schönberg
Arnold Schönberg (1874–1951) was one of the most significant figures in the creative world in the first half of the 20th century. Following in the tradition of Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler, the Austrian (and, after his immigration to New York and later Los Angeles, also US-American) composer, music theorist, teacher, and writer reshaped the practice of harmony in classical music. Some of Schönberg’s most famous contributions were the development of his twelve-tone-method and his attention to sound color (Klangfarbe), both of which strongly influenced generations of composers up until today.
But Schönberg’s creative world goes beyond music. He was a designer, painter, inventor, and systems thinker: building tools and furniture, binding books, designing stage sets and costumes, inventing machines, and even building his own chess set, for four players.
In this meetup, we explore Schönberg through a UX lens: what can his way of thinking, making, and problem-solving teach us about design, tools, and user experience today? We will also look at the museum and concert space as an experience that unfolds through the perception of an audience.
The [Arnold Schönberg Center](https://schoenberg.at/) is a repository of Schönberg's archival legacy. Director Dr. Ulrike Anton will provide an introduction to the Arnold Schönberg Center. User researcher Dr. Franziska Brunner will give us a guided tour and lead a discussion of the exhibition. Arnold Schönberg's estate is on [UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register](https://www.unesco.at/en/communication/documentary-heritage/memory-of-the-world-in-austria/arnold-schoenberg-estate), recognized for its global importance as a documentary heritage.
After an afternoon in the museum space from 3:00–6:00 p.m.. We also invite you to attend an [in-house concert at 6:30 p.m](https://schoenberg.at/en/events/upcoming-events/3793/loops-from-other-planets)., followed by dinner. 🎻 🍽️
* The €18 concert price includes entrance to the exhibit. (Entrance to just the exhibit without the concert costs € 6.)
* Admission for both the museum and the concert is free for those under 26 years old.
* Dinner afterwards is optional, and everyone will cover their own meal.

You just haven’t been able to follow through. You start things, lose momentum and find yourself starting over again. You’re not alone.
Most people get support at the beginning. And applause at the end. But the part that actually matters? The middle. The quiet, repetitive, sometimes frustrating part where nothing feels exciting, and everything depends on showing up. **That’s where we are.**
At NoCrastination, we don’t meet for hype. We meet to **show up and finish something, together.** Not perfectly. Not magically. Just consistently.

Not motivation. Not a productivity hack.
**You’ll get: ONE THING DONE.**

**This is how it starts**
You don’t need to commit to anything big. Just come once. Pick one thing.
Finish it. We’ll be there.

The High Performance Nervous System - Tea Circle
\*\*\*only 10 spots available\*\*\*
If you are familiar with high performance, and human potential, you already know that the nervous system is not a peripheral topic. It is the substrate.
Focus, creativity, emotional intelligence, the capacity for genuine connection, the quality of leadership, making good decisions under pressure — all of it is downstream of the state your nervous system is operating in at any given moment.
Especially expats who have spent years navigating relocation, high stakes, and constantly adapt to new environments, the nervous system carries a specific signature.
Research confirms that elevated cortisol, disrupted sleep, degraded executive function appear especially in populations who consider themselves performing well, because the performance continues even as the foundation slowly depletes.
The next level of performance does not come from pushing harder. It comes from addressing what is running underneath: the nervous system itself.
Regulation is the physiological prerequisite for clear thinking, genuine connection, and sustainable output. When you operate from a regulated baseline, decisions sharpen, leadership deepens, creativity flows, and the driven quality of your ambition stops costing you what it currently costs.
At this LibaTea circle, we explore how high achievers can move from chronic high-arousal functioning to a more powerful operating state, where drive and recovery reinforce each other rather than compete.
This is a group of ambitious, internationally-minded people engaging seriously with the science and practice of nervous system regulation.
**You will explore:**
\- Why high achievers and expats carry a specific and measurable nervous system load
\- What polyvagal theory and allostatic load research actually mean for how you perform
\- What genuine regulation looks like — beyond stress management and temporary relief
\- How your nervous system state shapes the quality of every decision\, conversation\, and creative act
This circle is for professionals, founders and expats who want to operate with more depth, clarity, and long-term capacity.
**Event flow (\~90 minutes):**
Arrival & welcome
Breath & tea
Guided reflection rounds
Closing integration
**A practical note:**
Spots are limited to 10 people.
A recommended contribution is 10€ / person.

**About LibaTea:**
LibaTea is a community exploring depth, growth, and genuine connection through conversation and ritual. We host weekly tea circles and monthly masterminds for thoughtful people who take their inner lives as seriously as their outer ones.
**Why tea?**
Tea rituals have been used for centuries to create presence and slow thinking down enough for something real to emerge. We use that principle to create the conditions for conversations worth having.
Visualization of multivariate data — a talk at the FJS
Our co-organizer Ursula Laa will be giving a talk orgranized by the Young Statistician Forum (FJS), and you are welcome to join! Expect a technical tour of visualisation tools for multivariate and high-dimensional data in R with practical examples!
**ℹ️ Abstract**
Statistical graphics are central to exploring and modeling complex data. As dimensionality increases, uncovering structure and dependencies becomes more challenging. This presentation gives an overview of practical tools for visualizing multivariate data, from strategic use of scatterplots and scatterplot matrices to linear and nonlinear projection methods. Special emphasis will be placed on tour methods—animated sequences of linear projections—that reveal clustering, outliers, and nonlinear relationships. All graphics will be demonstrated in R, with code to reproduce the results.

The Psychology and Personal Growth Circle: Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
Welcome to our cozy **The Psychology and Personal Growth Circle** which is part of the Social Book Club!
We will meet to discuss the book “**Antifragile**" (426 pages) written by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.
The idea is to connect with like minded readers that love to grow and get to know themselves better through reading and especially applying knowledge from books.
We meet up once a month and talk about our progress applying knowledge from a certain book and our experience.
The event will take place at the volunteer organisation **MUT**.
It is an organisation to supports humans, animals and the environment especially in Vienna.
MUT or the Social Book Club look forward to some donation to cover the cost of this event.
If you would like to help, please bring some cash with you.
Book Description:
In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem; in *Antifragile* he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what he calls the "antifragile" is one step beyond robust, as it benefits from adversity, uncertainty and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension.
See you then!
All the best
Sebastian

The main entrance of the shopping center opens onto stairs/elevator leading up to the 2nd floor cafe section where we will have a table displaying a sign with the Shut Up & Write logo.

Pop-up Book Club 3: The Ballad of The Sad Café, by Carson McCullers
Let’s meet and share our thoughts about Carson McCullers’ novella, The Ballad of The Sad Café.
Duty vs. Results: What Makes an Action Moral?
When judging morality, should we prioritize **intentions/duty** or **outcomes/results**? It introduces two influential philosophers as representatives of these approaches.
* **Immanuel Kant (deontology):** An action is moral when it is done from **duty** and follows rational, universal principles (the **categorical imperative**). Certain acts—like lying—are wrong regardless of the consequences; you can’t do a wrong thing for a right reason.
* **John Stuart Mill (utilitarian consequentialism):** The morality of an action is determined by its **effects**, specifically how much **happiness/well-being** it produces. Mill argues that some pleasures are “higher” than others, and that good intentions don’t redeem harmful outcomes.
## Discussion Questions
1. **The lying dilemma:** A murderer comes to your door and asks if your friend is hiding inside. Kant would say you must not lie.
2. **Can good intentions rescue a bad outcome?**
3. **The organ harvest problem:** A surgeon has five patients dying of organ failure and one healthy patient in for a checkup. Killing the one to harvest organs would save five lives, and the math works out for the utilitarian. Why does this feel so deeply wrong? Is that feeling a point in Kant's favor, or just a bias we should overcome?
4. **Do rules need exceptions?** Kant insists moral rules must be universal, with no exceptions. But most of us can imagine extreme scenarios where any rule seems like it should bend. Does the need for exceptions fatally undermine deontology, or is the strength of the system precisely that it refuses to bend?
5. **Who gets to calculate the consequences?** Utilitarianism asks us to maximize good outcomes, but we're notoriously bad at predicting consequences. If we can't reliably know the results of our actions, is it practical to base our entire moral system on outcomes? Does this uncertainty push us back toward rules and principles?
6. **Everyday morality:** Think about a real moral decision you've made recently, even a small one. Did you reason more like a Kantian (what's the right thing to do in principle?) or more like a utilitarian (what will produce the best result?)? Do most people naturally lean one way?
7. **Justice vs. the greater good:** A town can prevent a deadly plague by sacrificing one innocent person. The greater good is clearly served. But is it just? Can an action be morally right and deeply unjust at the same time?
8. **The big synthesis question:** Are these two systems actually opposed, or do they often arrive at the same answers by different paths? Is it possible that we need both: rules to guide us in the moment and consequences to evaluate systems and policies over time?
