The Dissident Salon - Poetry, Prose, and Provocation by Alissa Leeds
The Dissident Salon - Poetry, Prose, and Provocation by Alissa Leeds
The Dissident Salon is a weekly poetry and performance series created as an extension of the DISSIDENT Club’s mission to provide a home for dissenting voices, hosted by Alissa Leeds. Rooted in the tradition of the literary salon, it treats writing and performance as public acts that question power and challenge the systems that shape our lives. Each week features a curated performer, followed by open mic sessions open to all. Work may be presented in English, French, or other languages. Multilingual expression is central to the space and reflects the realities of exile, displacement, and exchange that define the DISSIDENT Club. The Salon is an ongoing forum for people who speak publicly and think critically through art. It exists to build community and support sustained creative work within the broader ecosystem of the DISSIDENT Club. **When:** Every Tuesday, starting January 6th, 2026 **Sign-ups:** 8:00 PM **Sets:** Three 45-minute sessions at 9:00 PM, 10:00 PM, and 11:00 PM **Where:** The DISSIDENT Club, 58 rue Richer, 75009 Bring work that confronts. We offer the microphone.

🌿🧘‍♀️ A bientôt! 🧘‍♂️🌿

Poetry Reading: Gentle Words & Deep Ideas 📖🫖🍪✨
Poetry Reading: Gentle Words & Deep Ideas 📖🫖🍪✨
**Welcome to the Paris Poetry Circle!** Now in its 30th year, our English-language poetry reading group continues to bring together lovers of verse and thought in the heart of Paris. 🎉 Join us this Wednesday evening for a gathering of minds and voices as we read and reflect on poems that move, challenge, and illuminate — all shared over a quiet cup of tea and biscuits. 🫖☕️🍪 We seek poems that are clear yet profound, sweet or serious — those that carry us forward and help us make sense of the world. We steer clear of the obscure or needlessly complex; we value clarity over cleverness, sincerity over show. Each poem is read anonymously to begin with, without revealing the author, allowing space for open, unbiased interpretation. We then explore it together — carefully, curiously — to uncover what lies beneath the surface. After the meeting, we write a letter of thanks to the living poets we have read at the group, to thank and congratulate them. We revere all the poets of this world. The group is small — usually six or seven thoughtful individuals, up to a maximum of ten. The conversation is warm, intelligent, and grounded. There is no performance, no pressure to contribute, and no cost. Only a shared pursuit of insight, beauty, and fellowship. If that resonates with you, we’d love to welcome you. Bring a poem, or simply bring yourself. 📚✨ \*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\* 65 rue Pascal, 75013 PARIS, courtyard chez Doctor Nagpal, in a pretty courtyard, ground floor left. Moonrise Picnic Wed Mar 4th, 7:30-9 PM, Pont des Arts
Moonrise Picnic Wed Mar 4th, 7:30-9 PM, Pont des Arts
**Ahoy there,** The next moonrise picnic will be Wed March 4, from 7:30 pm - 9 pm. (Moonrise around 8:25 pm.) This is one day after the official full moon to allow me to join you immediately upon my return to Paris, totally jet-lagged though I may be. Yes as host I am in charge of the calendar. 🤣 Clear ski (oops, too much time on the slopes in Colorado) permitting we may get a spectacular view of moon through the pagoda cupola on the roof of Theatre de Sarah Bernhardt at Place de Chatelet. According to my notes, this happens every March. The March full moon was known to Native Americans as the Full Worm Moon due to the fact that the thawing ground gives way to earthworms who say hello to the earliest robins. Other names include Full Crow Moon because of crows signaling the end of winter, Full Crust Moon because of crusty snow from thawing by day and freezing by night, the Lenten Moon between Mardi Gras and Easter, the Full Sap Moon because of tapping maple trees. **WHAT**: Everyone brings food and drink to share. **WHERE**: Pont des Arts. We'll gather around the bench just past the middle of the bridge (3rd bridge from the Left Bank side). Nearest metros: Pont Neuf and Louvre-Rivoli. **WHEN**: Wed March 4, from 7:30 pm - 9 pm **WHY**: Share one of the most memorable sights in Paris with some of the nicest people around. **WHO**: You and your friends. **HOW** to find us: Keep your eyes out for a bunch of nice people speaking English and French, laughing, drinking and munching around a bench, near the middle of the bridge. Look for a small white telescope if it’s not raining. **THEME**: Crepes **BIRTHDAYS**: Are you Pisces? If so, let me know so we can celebrate your birthday this month and blow out the world’s largest birthday candle. **PUZZLER**: The Puzzler is back due to popular demand. Yay! Credit and thank you for this one goes to Gerda. So keep your suggestions coming. Like the majority of galaxies the Milky Way is a spiral galaxy. How flat is it (in relation to its diameter)? As flat as an Olympics curling stone? A hockey puck? A Formula 1 car tire? A deep dish pizza? Or what? Here’s an image (photoshopped composite to help you out). https://www.reddit.com/r/space/comments/11iwq16/milkyway_above_the_monument_valley_usa_credits/ **PUZZLER ANSWER:** The Milky Way is 100,000 light years in diameter. But it’s only 1000 light years thick. Only! That means it’s 100 times wider than it is thick. Relative to its diameter the Milky Way is thinner than a pancake. More like a crepe. (Did you miss the Easter Egg hint in the Theme?) A crepe is the only thing Neil deGrasse Tyson could compare it to. What about a DVD Neil? Or a paper plate? Or sandpaper disc? Neil is a foodie! Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk. Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association: They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other church–state issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEA’s early wins and hard lessons, what we’re seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape — and practical ways to get involved. Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. Contra dance with Big Scioty on March 7 - First Congregational Church
Contra dance with Big Scioty on March 7 - First Congregational Church
**Caller: Frank Buschelmann** **Band: The Rosenthorns** **Big Scioty Contra Dance** **temporarily returning to our long ago location for Jan-March - First Congregational Church, 444 E. Broad St., Columbus 43215** WHAT IS CONTRA DANCING? Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude. THAT’s Contra Dancing! Wear cool and comfortable clothes (you will get warm) and clean shoes that won't mark up our nice wood floor. Be sure to come for the beginner's lesson from 7:30 - 8:00, followed by dancing 8:00 - 10:30. All dances are taught; we will help you learn! Beginners always welcome, no need to bring a partner. Cost is $10.00 adults, $5.00 ages 12-26. Under 12 free. Free parking in church lot. For more information contact me or check out our website: [www.bigscioty.com](http://www.bigscioty.com/) Please bring your own refillable water bottle. Snacks to share are always welcome!
