Brussels Runners - Tuesday Intervals
We do cycles of 4-6 weeks, with a progressive load, and a recovery week at the end of the cycle.
Session:
* 10 - 20’ warm up (easy run and drills)
* Core session (ie. 6x5' - 2' recovery)
* Cool down
We run together during Warm-up, and cool down and tey to regroup during recovery time. Paces are not imposed (everyone runs at his/her own pace) given the intensity suggested.
Notes:
It's NOT required to have an activity tracker or smart watch to be able to follow the session, as I'll be giving signals with a whistle.
Intervals training is not advised for total beginners. To have an idea, the average pace at the warm up is around 5'45"/km-6'15"/km so this pace should feel very comfortable

From End of DDD Tactical Patterns to using Spring Boot to build games
It's that time of the year again! Once a year, **BeJUG** takes the sessions outside, and we are happy to be back under the open sky.
A big thank you to **Oniryx** for hosting us once again. Great venue, great people, great vibes.
We have two excellent speakers ready to share some knowledge:
* **Ted** will dive into Event Sourcing and the End of DDD Tactical Patterns, a topic that should give us plenty to chew on (and probably to debate over a drink afterwards).
* **Alex** will show us how to build games using Spring Boot, because yes, Spring Boot is not just for enterprise CRUDs.
Come join us for this next event!
**Schedule**
* 18:00: Doors open + Food and Drinks
* 18:45: Intro and BeJUG updates
* 18:50: Talk 1
* 19:35: Little break
* 19:45: Talk 2
* 20:30: Mingling + Drinks
**Topics**
**Event Sourcing and the End of DDD Tactical Patterns?**
You finally have a Domain Model that represents the business and supports the functionality of the system. Then the hard part: how do you persist that model to a database? Maybe you're a purist (like me), mapping domain objects to separate database entities. or you directly annotate your domain objects, but have to compromise the domain model to fit the way databases store information.
Event sourcing avoids this problem while providing flexible transactional (consistency) boundaries. Instead of mapping object state to tables, you store a sequence of events that led up to the current state: "Concert Scheduled", "Tickets Purchased", etc. Each event is added to an append-only log, making writes almost trivial, with "projections" making custom-fit views straightforward.
However, event sourcing requires a mind-shift from the well-known CRUD and DDD Tactical Patterns (Aggregates and Repositories), but the benefits are more flexible systems, with a less "leaky" way to externalize the state of your domain model that is easier to apply across the domain.
In this talk, you'll learn how event-sourcing works at the code level without event-sourcing libraries getting in the way of deeper understanding. We'll walk through a codebase for a Concert Ticketing system and see how straightforward the implementation can be.
We start with "Event Modeling" the system, defining the commands (user actions) that generate them, the aggregates that make business decisions (and how to move to "deciders"), and the projections used to generate the user interface. We'll see how event-sourcing makes testing easier to write and understand.
We'll end by touching on the challenges to using event-sourcing, such as performance and schema evolution.
**About Ted**
Ted M. Young is a Java technical coach and live coder. He's been in software development for over 30 years, following eXtreme Programming practices since 2000. Ted loves helping folks make their code more testable and teaches Test-Driven Development (TDD), Refactoring, Domain-Driven Design, and Event Sourcing through hands-on, shared experiences. Ted created the acclaimed "JitterTed's TDD Game" used at events and companies worldwide to help people understand the nuances and benefits of TDD in a fun way.
***Let's use Spring Boot to build games, because why not?***
If you work on enterprise grade microservices on the JVM, you have undoubtedly heard of Spring Boot. Most developers see it as the reliable backbone of enterprise software. It is stable, predictable, and safe. But what if we took all those conventions and threw them out the window? What if we repurposed the IoC container, event listeners, and bean lifecycles to reveal what Spring Boot was always meant to be? A game development framework!
Join Alexander as he attempts to deconstruct and demystify the Spring ecosystem by forcing it to do things it was definitely not designed for. We are not talking about simple text adventures here. We are talking about building complex, real-time games like a Terraria clone or a souls-like RPG, all powered by the same annotations you use for your day job.
This session explores what happens when you learn technologies by breaking them. Whether you are a Spring veteran or a newcomer, this talk offers a fresh perspective on the tools you use every day. You will leave with a better understanding of how Spring Boot works under the hood and the inspiration to build something completely unnecessary, just because you can. Come for the absurdity, stay for the laughs, and see what happens when you strip away conventions and best practices in the pursuit of a wild idea.
**About Alex**
Alexander, a 35-year-old Software Engineer at JDriven, holds dual Dutch and Greek nationality. He earned his master’s degree in Game Studies from the University of Amsterdam, where he discovered his passion for gamification and software engineering. Alexander aims to bridge the gap between game development and software engineering, believing that both industries have much to learn from each other. He is dedicated to integrating technologies and methodologies from both fields. Additionally, he enjoys experimenting with new technologies and cutting-edge sdk’s.

Welcome to The Club.
**Welcome to The Club.**
A **curated** social community in Brussels for people who want real connections, memorable experiences, and **better energy than the usual random meetup chaos**.
Most of our events happen in **private homes**, gardens, hidden places around Brussels, or unusual locations outside the city. The goal is simple: create the kind of atmosphere where people actually talk, laugh, connect, and want to come back.
We organize things like:
• gourmet lunches & dinners
• picnics & roadtrips
• cooking nights
• walks around Brussels
• karaoke & movie nights
• debates & discussions
• card and social games
• occasional “chaperoned” social evenings where people can meet naturally in a safe environment
The difference is that we personally curate and vet new members.
The host actively introduces newcomers, helps people integrate into the group, and keeps the atmosphere respectful and relaxed. We have zero tolerance for creepy behavior, unwanted pressure, spam, random uninvited people, or drama.
*Unfortunately, posting too many details publicly on Meetup or on the internet in general quickly attracts bots, scammers, fake profiles, crypto weirdos, and people who completely ruin the vibe for everyone else.*
That’s why most of our real coordination happens privately through our ***vetted WhatsApp community***.
To join, simply scan the QR code in the image.
If you are on your phone and cannot scan it directly:
• take a screenshot of the image
• open the screenshot in your photo gallery
• most phones can automatically detect QR codes from photos by long pressing or using Google Lens / iPhone scan feature
Then request access to the group and introduce yourself briefly.
See you soon

🍣 Sushi Connections – Meet Through Shared Experiences, Not Interviews.
🍣 Sushi Connections – Meet Through Shared Experiences, Not Interviews.
Welcome to the very first event of our newly integrated Singles Community!
Before we launch a full series of dating experiences, we'd like to test interest in a concept that we believe is much more natural, fun, and meaningful than traditional speed dating.
## Why Sushi?
Let's be honest...
Traditional singles events can feel a little artificial.
You sit across from someone, ask the same questions over and over again..
Instead, what if people could meet while doing something together?
Making sushi is the perfect activity because it is collaborative, social, fun, and allows participants to naturally rotate and interact with different people throughout the evening.
Rather than interviewing each other, you'll be:
🍣 Preparing sushi together
🍣 Working as a team
🍣 Sharing laughs and conversation naturally
🍣 Meeting multiple people throughout the evening
🍣 Enjoying the sushi you helped create
Sometimes the best connections happen when you're focused on an experience rather than trying to impress someone. And if you don't meet anyone , you've learned a new skill.
## The Concept
The idea is simple:
✨ Welcome drink and introductions
✨ Sushi-making experience with rotating partners
✨ Shared dinner with the group
✨ Optional confidential matching system after the event
The goal is to create a relaxed environment where people can get to know each other naturally through a shared activity.
## ⚠️ Important – Interest Check Event
At this stage, we are publishing this event primarily to measure interest in the concept.
📍 **The exact venue is still being selected.**
💰 **The final price is not yet confirmed.**
🗓️ **The final event date may be adjusted slightly depending on venue availability.**
By joining this event, you are simply expressing your interest in participating once the concept is finalised.
If there is enough enthusiasm, we will secure the venue, finalise the details, and open official registrations.
## Who Is This For?
❤️ Singles who prefer meaningful interactions over superficial conversations
❤️ People who enjoy social activities and meeting new people
❤️ Anyone curious to try a different approach to dating
If you've ever thought:
*"I'd rather meet someone while doing something together than sitting across a table asking questions..."*
then this event might be exactly what you're looking for.
Join the interest list and help us launch the very first Sunday Vacations Sushi Connections experience! 🍣✨
Debate Night: Crime and Free Will
Can crime be predicted by algorithms? And if so, should we use them to prevent crimes from happening?
This question has fueled many dystopian works of fiction, such as **Minority Report**, which imagines a technology capable of predicting crimes in precise detail and raises fundamental questions about free will and individual responsibility. **Person of Interest** explores a more realistic scenario, where machine learning and mass surveillance are used to identify high-risk individuals through the monitoring of communications. Many episodes of **Black Mirror** similarly examine the consequences of predictive technologies and their impact on privacy, liberty, and social control.
A common theme emerges from these stories: such technologies are often portrayed not as tools of public safety, but as threats to freedom and democracy.
Yet the idea is not purely fictional. While no system today can predict crimes with the certainty depicted in science fiction, predictive algorithms are already being used in various aspects of law enforcement and criminal justice. **COMPAS**, for example, has been used in American courts to estimate the likelihood that a defendant will reoffend. **Geolitica**, formerly known as **PredPol**, uses historical crime data to forecast crime hotspots and guide police deployment. More broadly, advances in artificial intelligence, big data, and digital surveillance continue to expand our ability to identify patterns in human behavior. Some even point to the Chinese **Social Credit System** as an example of how large-scale data collection can be used to monitor and influence citizens.
Now that the technological capabilities have already been laid out, should we, as a society, pursue the endeavor of developing a predictive algorithm that would allow us to prevent crime? Or is there a moral imperative that prevents us from doing so?
Join us as we debate whether predictive crime technology represents the future of public safety or the first step toward a surveillance dystopia.
This debate will follow a British Parliamentary format with eight debaters split into **four teams of two.**
Participants who wish to speak are highly encouraged to bring a paper and pen. You are welcome to participate even if you have no prior debating experience.
We aim for debates that are respectful, constructive, and welcoming:
* **Respect ideas and people** Listen actively, stay quiet while others speak, and debate arguments, not identities or beliefs.
* **Be concise and civil** Keep questions short and relevant; avoid hostility, hate speech, or discrimination.
* **Respect boundaries and time** No unwanted advances or suggestive behavior; arrive on time to avoid disrupting the debate.
* **Follow moderators** They guide the discussion and ensure fairness.

Battle of the personal agents
Join the Columbus AI community for a special event.
**Battle of the Personal Agents** is your chance to see what people are actually building with AI agents and personal automation systems. Whether you’re running OpenClaw, Hermes, or a completely custom solution, bring your agent and show the community how it works.
We’re interested in real-world implementations: the problems your agent solves, how you use it day-to-day, how it’s hosted and managed, how you built it, and why you’ve chosen to keep using it. Live demonstrations are encouraged, so be prepared to show your code, architecture, workflows, and your agent performing real tasks.
This is less about polished presentations and more about sharing practical experience, comparing approaches, and learning from one another. If you’d like to present, please contact Chris Slee (via meetup) before the event so we can allocate enough time for everyone’s demonstrations.
Come ready to show what you’ve built, discover what others are doing, and maybe find a few ideas worth taking home.
Whether you’re deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Finding Product Insights
**The Behavior Gap: Where Products Win or Lose**
Teams today have more data than ever, and yet many still struggle to understand why customers adopt, engage with, or abandon their products. Teams sprint, ship faster, and chase more signals… all while metrics stall and confidence drops. The missing piece isn’t more data. It’s often the behavioral insight between the metrics, explaining why the numbers move in the first place. Dashboards can tell you what customers did, but understanding why they did it (and how to influence what they do next) requires a deeper blend of insights. This session is about closing that gap.
Drawing from real-world experience designing and scaling products as [ZoCo Design](https://zocodesign.com/)’s CEO, [Lacey](https://www.linkedin.com/in/laceypicazo/) will share how to cut through the noise and identify the insights that actually change behavior—moving people, and moving metrics. You’ll learn:
* Why understanding customer behavior is a quant and qual challenge
* How to spot the signals that actually predict behavior change
* Where AI accelerates insight, and where it creates distraction
* How to get meaningfully closer to customers, without adding more tools
This talk reframes how to evaluate performance and identify what levers actually improve it, helping your team to make smarter bets with greater confidence. Every meaningful outcome is driven by behavior change. And when you know how to design for behavior, you stop guessing, and start building things that work.
