The Moral Nature of Gestation & the Political Significance of Birth
Recent work in the metaphysics of pregnancy tells us that foetuses are best conceived as body parts which will transform into independent organisms after birth. This picture raises several philosophical questions. One question is whether birth is as morally or politically relevant as it is biologically relevant. Another relevant question is: what, exactly, is the status of foetuses before birth? Are they moral persons with rights? Are they citizens? Or are they merely morally consider-able — that is, appropriate subjects of moral concern? In this presentation, I will attempt to make progress on these difficult yet pressing questions.

**About the Speaker:**
My main areas of interest are the ethics of immigration, citizenship, and the family, broadly conceived. Sometimes I bring these areas of interest together, as when I discuss the ethics of family migration schemes, and the value of citizenship for children. My first book, [Liberal Self-Determination in a World of Migration](https://global.oup.com/academic/product/liberal-self-determination-in-a-world-of-migration-9780190056070?cc=au&lang=en&#), was published in 2022 by Oxford University Press. My second book, [Parenting and the Goods of Childhood](https://global.oup.com/academic/product/parenting-and-the-goods-of-childhood-9780197612705?cc=au&lang=en&#), was published in 2023, also with OUP. It provides a new theory of what justice requires from parents, both adoptive and biological. My next book *The Future of Gestation: A Normative Inquiry* is under contract with OUP.

About the Centre for Ethics (http://ethics.utoronto.ca):
The Centre for Ethics is an interdisciplinary centre aimed at advancing research and teaching in the field of ethics, broadly defined. The Centre seeks to bring together the theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse scholars, students, public servants and social leaders in order to increase understanding of the ethical dimensions of individual, social, and political life.
In pursuit of its interdisciplinary mission, the Centre fosters lines of inquiry such as (1) foundations of ethics, which encompasses the history of ethics and core concepts in the philosophical study of ethics; (2) ethics in action, which relates theory to practice in key domains of social life, including bioethics, business ethics, and ethics in the public sphere; and (3) ethics in translation, which draws upon the rich multiculturalism of the City of Toronto and addresses the ethics of multicultural societies, ethical discourse across religious and cultural boundaries, and the ethics of international society.
The Ethics of A.I. Lab at the Centre For Ethics recently appeared on a list of 10 organizations leading the way in ethical A.I.: https://ocean.sagepub.com/blog/10-organizations-leading-the-way-in-ethical-ai
Bouldering + Drinks | Small Group, Downtown Toronto
**A new format: you choose who you're interested in meeting**
This meetup is about getting to know new people and sharing the experience in a small group (3-6 people).
*We use the LYTT platform to handle group size and balance - so you're not just hoping someone interesting shows up. To apply you will need to create an account at [lytt.me](https://lytt.me/meetup/basecamp-bouldering) \- it's free\.*
**The event: Bouldering Session at Toronto's Social Climbing Gym**
Basecamp is where climbing gets social. Colorful holds on textured walls, crash pads below, and a vibe that says 'yeah, you can do this.' Over 100 routes across 7,000+ square feet mean there's always something new to try.
Your group meets up, grabs some chalk, and starts solving routes together. Some will fly up the wall, others will laugh at their first attempt. That's the point. Between climbs, you're swapping beta, cheering each other on, and realizing that falling is way more fun with friends watching. After, we grab drinks or food nearby. The whole experience runs about 2.5 hours.
**The group: LYTT platform**
LYTT forms small groups for events and activities you pick.
1\. Click 'Attend' here on Meetup\, then head to [lytt.me](https://lytt.me/meetup/basecamp-bouldering) to create a quick profile (photo, a few interests, short bio)
2\. Browse others who applied and select who you'd want to meet
3\. We form groups where the interest is mutual
4\. You get notified when your group is confirmed \- payment happens then
5\. Show up knowing your crew already picked you \- *but no one knows who picked who*, to keep mystery and low pressure
Applying doesn't guarantee a spot - but we may form multiple groups or invite you to similar events with other crews.
**What's included:**
• Day pass with gear rental (shoes and chalk)
• 90 minutes of climbing with your crew
**Details:**
**Cost:** $22 CAD (pay after your group is confirmed). Student/youth discounts available.
**Group size:** 3-6 people

AI Safety Thursday: Why Attackers Are Winning and What We Can Do About It
***This is a paid event ($5 general admission, free for students & job seekers) with limited tickets - you must [RSVP on Luma](https://luma.com/a7s95e3y) to secure your spot.***
LLMs are shifting the cybersecurity balance—in favor of attackers.
The barrier to sophisticated cyberattacks is dropping fast. What once required large teams and significant budgets can now be accomplished by smaller groups with moderate expertise. Personalized phishing campaigns that took weeks now take hours. Zero-day vulnerabilities that took a syndicate to detect are now discovered by independent actors. While these attacks still require technical knowledge, the pool of capable threat actors and scale of impact are rapidly expanding. While LLM-powered attacks are proliferating, but cutting-edge defenses are only accessible to well-resourced frontier labs—leaving most organizations exposed. [Diana Sarbakysh](https://www.linkedin.com/in/dissatay/) (Network Engineer, and alumni of first AI security bootcamp) will:
* Introduce frameworks for evaluating emerging AI capabilities and institutional readiness (RAND framework)
* Demonstrate the current state of AI-enabled threats and corporate reality check through real incidents
* Provide concrete action paths: from bootcamps and independent study resources to research opportunities and corporate security initiatives
This talk is a call to action for corporate practitioners, security professionals, researchers, and anyone interested in improving the state of defences at large.
**Event Schedule**
6:00 to 6:30 - Food and introductions
6:30 to 7:30 - Presentation and Q&A
7:30 to 9:00 - Open Discussions
If you can't make it in person, feel free to join the live stream starting at 6:30 pm, via [this link](https://www.youtube.com/@Trajectory-Labs/live).

Capricorn Full Moon Meditation & Reflection
*“At the time of each full moon a bridge of contact and communication is established between humanity and higher centers. It is said that this communication line even extends from planetary centers to the Solar Lord, thus building a unique channel between humanity and the Source of Life. This **opportunity for contact** is a moment of **regeneration**, a moment in which one can **again contact his lost vision** or **contact a new and greater vision**, **charge all his being**, and **set his steps right** on the path of **evolution** and **service**.*
*"The contact, carried on all over the world with great spiritual centers, releases tremendous energy all over the planet. This energy makes the etheric body of the planet more sensitive to the Plan and to Divine Will and inspires all aspirants to reach a greater vision.”*
— *Torkom Saraydarian, Symphony of the Zodiac*
Across the world, groups gather at the Full Moon to meditate together, creating a shared field of intention. This collective act is understood as a form of group service, helping to distribute spiritual energy throughout the planetary environment and to strengthen humanity’s responsiveness to purpose, goodwill, and the Plan.
You are warmly invited to join us for an evening of **Capricorn Full Moon Meditation and Reflection**, held in a quiet and contemplative atmosphere. The evening includes silent meditation and reflective focus aligned with the Full Moon energies.
This gathering is open to all — no prior experience is required.

Mob Programming at Mofer Coffee
Let’s do some coding together at a cafe! No more working alone in the weekend. Here, we write code together. And I mean together together. Not occupying-the-same-space-but-separate together.
Here’s how it works: Jennifer brings her mobile app project, tells everyone that it is like Pinterest for recipes and she’d like to work on the nav bar. Paul and Chloe think Jennifer's project is fascinating, and they join the group. They gather around Jennifer’s laptop and work on the nav bar for 2 hours. Jennifer is the one typing out the code while Paul and Chloe research, brainstorm, and offer suggestions.
If you’re feeling stuck on your own project or need a motivation boost, bring it to mob programming!
Want to learn by watching how others code and solve problems? Join someone else’s project at this event!
Oh and we love your half-done projects that you are a bit embarrassed to share. Absolutely bring those to the event!
**Discord**:
We use Discord to share screen & code snippets during the event. Also feel free to share your projects here before the event!
https://discord.gg/Da9fZFxPfs
**Event policy**:
* We have 0 tolerance for harassment.
* We don’t allow the projects that are not meant to be shared in public such as school assignments, interview tasks, or trade secrets.
* The goal is to write code. We discourage you from pitching business ideas here, doing code reviews, or spending the whole event on planning what to do.
* Please buy a drink, and tip the barista well.
Learning to Feel Safe: Nervous System Regulation in Real Life
***1-hr Zoom Group Therapy Session.***
***Cost: $10***
***Payments made via e-transfer, before the session to:*** tonym.therapy@gmail.com
*(After payment, you will receive a Zoom link. Please check your messages on the day of the group.)*
***A therapist-led group focused on understanding the nervous system, emotional regulation, and building safety in everyday life.***
Many people walk through life feeling tense, overwhelmed, or emotionally reactive without fully understanding why.
You may notice anxiety that doesn’t settle, difficulty relaxing around others, or a sense of disconnection from yourself even when things appear fine on the outside. These reactions are not personal flaws but patterns shaped by stress, trauma, and earlier relational experiences that live in the nervous system.
This therapist-led group offers a supportive space to understand how your nervous system works and to learn practical ways to feel more grounded and safe in your body and in relationships.
The focus is on education, gentle experiential exercises, and discussion rather than pressure to share personal details. The goal is to build awareness, regulation, and self-compassion so daily life feels more manageable and connected.

Data & Analytics Wednesday - Doing KPIs Right
**Doing KPIs Right: a KEY to Analytics (and AI!) Impact!**
On the one hand, KPIs are such a Business 101 concept that it may seem a little silly to dedicate an entire session to the topic. On the other hand, KPIs get handled so poorly so often that a case could be made that this meetup could just be one of the most impactful sessions of the entire year!
We’re starting off the year at a new location: [COhatch Upper Arlington](https://www.cohatch.com/locations/columbus/upper-arlington/) but with a familiar speaker, Tim Wilson! We’ll be back at Rev1 in February, when the speaker will presumably not be Tim.
Tim will make the case that effectively measuring performance of projects, campaigns, and initiatives (and even meetups!) should be a foundation for any data analytics program. Topics covered will include: the “two magic questions” of performance measurement, how to help business partners distinguish between outcomes and outputs, and effective tactics for collaboratively establishing KPI targets.
He will also stick his neck out by demonstrating some of these techniques in real-time by measuring whether his talk lives up to the promise of this description!
All CBUSDAW events are free thanks to our 2026 Sponsors: Clarivoy, Conductrics, What Box Consulting Group, and Piwik PRO.

We’ll highlight new management, monitoring, and troubleshooting capabilities designed to simplify operations and reduce firefighting. AI‑powered features exist in this release, but the focus here is on the foundational improvements you can use immediately. Whether you’re modernizing, maintaining, or planning your next upgrade cycle, this session will help you understand what’s new and how to prepare your environment and your team.

Men's Group meetup
**The idea for this group is to build a community where men can gather together and build connections & learn and grow from each other.**
How we start each meeting is by each of us checking in with our "roses and thorns" aka what are the good things and the bad things going on in your life recently?
Then we will go into a topic discussion.

Humanist Program
Our January program is privileged to have Kristen Tregar as our speaker. Ms. Tregar is the co-author with John de Lancie (the actor who portrayed the character Q on Star Trek next generation) of a radio play depicting the events surrounding the Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District trial. The trial decided the issue of some of the Dover school district board members attempting to insert creationism disguised as "intelligent design" into the 9th grade biology curriculum. She will discuss the trial and the process of writing the play. (Bob Leonhard has seen the play and it is riveting and tense). Ms. Tregar's bio is below:
Kristen Tregar is a dramaturg, director, playwright, and theatre teacher. She earned her Ph.D. in Drama and Theatre from the UC San Diego and UC Irvine joint program. In addition, she has a MS in Forensic Science from City University of New York- John Jay College of Criminal Justice and a MA in Educational Theatre from New York University- Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Her original short story "Far From Here" was recently published in *Stay Awhile Longer: More Scenes From Temecula Valley*. She has two rescued dogs (Kira and Harry) and she rides, competes, and foxhunts with her horses, Andromache and Baker Street Irregular.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
