Philosophies of East & West - First Evening
Philosophies of East & West - First Evening
**This is a ticketed event for £10, purchases available at [eventbrite here](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/philosophies-of-east-west-first-evening-tickets-1982072570414?aff=oddtdtcreator&_gl=1%2A1ynpvct%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_ga%2AOTQxMTAzNjU3LjE3Njk3ODM4NTk.%2A_ga_TQVES5V6SH%2AczE3Njk4NzEwNzckbzMkZzEkdDE3Njk4NzE5NTMkajQ5JGwwJGgw).** Philosophy means the love of wisdom, and being a philosopher essentially means having an active attitude and awareness towards life. We are all born philosophers, with a natural need to ask questions and with the intuition that there are answers to be found. Every civilisation has tried to pass on its wisdom, leaving us a vast heritage of useful knowledge and experiences to rediscover. Explore the timeless ideas that have inspired and guided humanity throughout history and their relevance and practical application for our lives. This first evening can be attended for £10 as a standalone introduction to **Philosophies of East & West** however if you are interested in learning more about the full 18-week course and applying, please visit [philosophiesofeastandwest.org](https://www.philosophiesofeastandwest.org/ "https://www.philosophiesofeastandwest.org/")
Philosophy: Who Needs It
Philosophy: Who Needs It
“Now some of you might say, as many people do: ‘Aw, I never think in such abstract terms—I want to deal with concrete, particular, real-life problems—what do I need philosophy for?’ My answer is: In order to be able to deal with concrete, particular, real-life problems—i.e., in order to be able to live on earth.” *Ayn Rand, Philosophy: Who Needs It* In this essay, Ayn Rand explains what philosophy is, why philosophy is relevant (and for whom). Join us for a discussion of the essay which is available here in text and audio, for free: [https://courses.aynrand.org/works/philosophy-who-needs-it/](https://courses.aynrand.org/works/philosophy-who-needs-it/)

After Earth School -Leon Deith
After Earth School -Leon Deith
After Earth School continues the journey begun in My Earth School, focusing on how inner insight can be lived more fully. Drawing on diverse contemplative and contemporary practices, it offers reflective tools for gently questioning old assumptions about identity and limitations. After Earth School is a follow‑on to My Earth School for readers who have begun to declutter their inner lives and relate more gently to their own humanity, yet still feel that deeper change has not fully filtered into everyday experience. It focuses on how to recognise a quieter, more spacious sense of self and to live from that perspective in practical, grounded ways. Drawing on a range of contemplative and psychological approaches—from traditional teachings to contemporary tools such as artificial intelligence—the book introduces reflective exercises designed to question habitual assumptions about limitation and identity. Rather than promising a life without challenges, it encourages a different relationship with thoughts, emotions and “reality”, so that meaning, ease and joy become more available in ordinary life. Throughout, Leon Deith invites readers to consider themselves not only as individuals with personal histories, but also as expressions of a wider field of awareness, exploring what this shift in self‑understanding might look like in day‑to‑day living. Whether you are navigating a crossroads, feeling stuck in old habits, or simply wanting to understand yourself better, After Earth School creates a calm, supportive space to step back, reset and move forward with a little more clarity and confidence.

Philosophy in the Park 134 (in The Barbican)
Philosophy in the Park 134 (in The Barbican)
Philosophy in the Park is a philosophical discussion group. Open to all. No previous philosophical experience necessary. We will meet in the Barbican Centre on Level Minus 1. Outside The Hall. Here's how it works: * At the start of each hour vote on which questions to discuss. You can vote for more than one question if you'd like. The questions with the most votes are the questions we discuss. * We then break up into groups and each group does a different question. The question is just a starting point and it's cool if you go on tangents and up end talking about different things. You're welcome to join in and participate or if you'd prefer you're welcome to sit back and enjoy the conversation. After an hour we all come back together, take a quick break and then repeat all over again. So in 3 hours we go around 3 times. The aim is to have fun, meet new people, generate interesting and thought-provoking conversations, have your horizons expanded, challenge your preconceptions and who knows - you might even learn something? In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive for everyone as possible please follow these simple guidelines: 1. Keep it Philosophical (No Science, no History, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, personal anecdotes etc). 2. Think for Yourself (No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read). 3. Tangents are Cool (Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question). 4. Keep it Succinct (Like this). 5. Be Excellent to Each Other (But of course). Philosophy is about conceptual analysis. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the real world. It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas. To terms of the right attitude: It's not about debating and trying to win - it's about listening to people and working collaboratively to increase our collective understanding. No homework or prior knowledge or reading is necessary - simply come and enjoy the discussions. After the event finishes we have an area reserved in The Shakespeare pub which is just around the corner from the Barbican. You are very welcome to join us if you'd like. If you would like to submit a question please join the Whatsapp group. Question submissions take place on the Thursday before the meeting. We hope to see you there. Nice one. ... To join the Philosophy in the Park WhatsApp Group please click here: [https://chat.whatsapp.com/CdFaxJHbeOw9UOfuk7spiK](https://chat.whatsapp.com/CdFaxJHbeOw9UOfuk7spiK) (in order to stop spam bots this will take you to a Waiting Room. Join us for a relaxed walking trail of just over an hour through the beautiful surroundings of Greenwich Park 🌿 The route is easy-going and mostly flat, making it suitable for all fitness levels 💪🏻 📍 We’ll begin at the south entrance of the Greenwich Foot Tunnel, by Cutty Sark. There are plenty of amenities nearby, including washrooms, cafés, and parking facilities, ensuring a comfortable experience for everyone 💡 To kick things off, we’ll share a few interesting facts and bits of history about the area — and everyone is welcome to add their own insights along the way. 📸 From there, we’ll follow the scenic Greenwich circular path, taking in breathtaking views as we stroll and chat our way through the park. Workshop; The Mysteries of Consciousness and the search for depth
This is a ticketed event and purchases can be made [here via eventbrite. ](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/workshop-the-mysteries-of-consciousness-and-the-search-for-depth-tickets-1983730926602?aff=oddtdtcreator&_gl=1%2A3hpw60%2A_up%2AMQ..%2A_ga%2AMjQ5MDU0MjgzLjE3NzE3OTgwNDc.%2A_ga_TQVES5V6SH%2AczE3NzE3OTgwNDYkbzEkZzAkdDE3NzE3OTgwNDYkajYwJGwwJGgw) *Where our capacity to measure is limited, philosophy can help us to approach mystery and the unknown.* ‘What is consciousness?’ is perhaps the greatest anomaly of science but moving closer to understanding this and searching for greater depth in life has always been the goal of the philosophers. Where our capacity to quantify and measure is limited, philosophy can help us to approach mystery and harmonise our relationship with the unknown, acting as a bridge between different aspects of ourselves and of our reality. This workshop will consist of three parts with some practical exercises. **Part 1: Consciousness** **and Science** \- an overview of ‘consciousness anomalies’ considering ways to dialogue more openly and about what we don’t understand\. **Part 2: Life on Many Levels** \- from the Celts to the Egyptians\, life was traditionally considered to exist on many levels both visible and invisible\. Using symbol and philosophy we will explore and how we might better relate to different levels of life\. **Part 3: Seeing** **and Experiencing** \- Neoplatonist philosophers presented a simple structure for entering more deeply into reality which we will learn and practice during the session\, with further suggestions for deepening our experience of life and expanding consciousness\.

Book Club Meeting - Spirituality Before Religions by Prof Kaba Hiawatha Kamen
Book Club Meeting - Spirituality Before Religions by Prof Kaba Hiawatha Kamen
**Association of Black Humanists Book Club Meeting** We are delighted to invite members to our next Book Club gathering, where we’ll be discussing ***Spirituality Before Religions: Unseen Science and Seen Spirituality*** by **Prof. Kaba Hiawatha Kamene**. This book challenges us to explore African-centred understandings of spirituality, science, consciousness, and human meaning. It’s a powerful invitation to interrogate what spirituality can look like outside dogma—and what it has meant for Black people historically and today. As Black humanists, this conversation sits right at the intersection of culture, reason, history, and liberation. Expect a rich, respectful discussion, critical reflection, and space for diverse perspectives. The book confronts one of the most enduring legacies of colonial domination: the erasure and distortion of African knowledge systems. Long before imposed religions, our ancestors engaged deeply with science, consciousness, spirituality, and the natural world—without dogma, without fear, and without submission. Date: Saturday, 7th March 2026 Time: 4pm Where: 55 Square Bar & Restaurants, 126 Barking Rd, London E16 1EN

Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event. Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk. Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association: They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other church–state issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEA’s early wins and hard lessons, what we’re seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape — and practical ways to get involved. Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. No pressure and no experience required—just an interest in learning and building. While we continue to pursue a more permanent venue for this Meetup, we’ll be using public library facilities based on availability. This session will be at the Worthington Park Library in the Olentangy Meeting Room.
