Critique-Free Writing Group [in-person & virtual]
Critique-Free Writing Group [in-person & virtual]
This group is for anyone who writes - for any reason. Have a thesis or article you need to write? Trying to finish a novel or an academic paper? This group is for you. We are currently meeting in-person at Locus Workspace. If you have any questions, contact Sonya Lano here or on Facebook or Messenger (https://www.facebook.com/sonya.lano). We start at 9:00, introduce ourselves, and share a few words about what we're working on and what we hope to accomplish during the session. At the end of the session, you can give us a brief recap of how it went. We'll break at noon. The afternoon session starts at 2:00 pm. You're welcome to join both sessions or just one. Please come as close to 9:00 as you can if you come for the morning session. If you come to the afternoon session, we are usually back by about a quarter to 2:00.
Symposium
Symposium
Join us for Symposium! 🌞🌻🌳 In antiquity, a symposium was a gathering of friends who came together to recline around a shared table, where wine and conversation flowed freely into the night. Together, they would choose a topic and take turns speaking, listening, and laughing—guided by the rhythms of drink and dialogue. Inspired by this tradition, our Symposium has no set theme. It's an invitation to come together with other curious minds, to offer up questions or ideas, and to vote together on where to begin. Whether you're hungry for connection or simply seeking space to speak and be heard, you're warmly welcomed to join the conversation. Symposium will meet in parks throughout Prague, embracing the sunshine and pleasant weather while we have it. Bring a blanket or something to sit on. There’s no cost to join, but please bring a snack or drink to share, if you're able. Most of all, bring a curious mind and a willingness to learn from the insight of others. Feel free to bring a friend or two--also, children and friendly dogs are welcome! \*\*\* If the weather doesn't cooperate, we'll try to find an alternate venue—so keep an eye on the event chat or your email for updates. Also, despite the origins of the Symposium, our goal is not necessarily to get drunk and the organizer would encourage you not to come with that sole purpose in mind. :) The first 45 minutes of the event will be dedicated to simply getting to know one another, and we highly encourage you to join for this part. We will then vote whether to continue free conversation, to join together in a single conversation, or to split up into multiple groups. Afterwards, you’re welcome to stay or follow onto any spontaneous activity that unfolds. A note on attendance: If you need to cancel, please do so at least a few days in advance and update your RSVP accordingly. This helps honor the host’s efforts and makes space for others who would like to attend. Repeated last-minute cancellations or no-shows may result in being placed on the waitlist for future events.
Open philosophical discussion in the heart of Prague
Open philosophical discussion in the heart of Prague
**These are the hottest days of the year. We will meet on the 4th of July at the entrance of the Planetárium Praha ([Královská obora 233, Bubenec, 170 21 Praha 7](https://www.google.de/maps/place/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x470b94ce6ef24a2d:0x95d62e70e8497a61?sa=X&ved=1t:8290&ictx=111)).** **From 17:00 until 17:15, we will gather in front of the planetarium. After 17:15, we shall then start searching for a nice place under the trees, where we will discuss, eat and drink together until the night…** **If you like to have a philosophical conversation while enjoying the magnificent surroundings of the Stromovka Park, come and join us, the only condition for joining is that you bring something to eat and to drink with you. We will put all the delicious things on a blanket so that we don’t exchange only arguments…** **Even though I normally don’t determine a topic in advance, I would like to ask you this time to make a list of some of your favorite movies. Try to imagine you have to convince another person that these movies are great. What would you say? What makes these movies important for you? What important (philosophical) questions do these movies raise or maybe even answer?**
Via Ferrata – Pastýřská stěna, Děčín (Day Trip)
Via Ferrata – Pastýřská stěna, Děčín (Day Trip)
**A vertical sandstone wall rising straight from the banks of the Elbe. Děčín Castle staring at you from across the river. 16 routes bolted into solid rock, ranging from first-timer-friendly to genuinely hard. And it's 90 minutes from Prague by train.** **Pastýřská stěna — Shepherd's Wall — is the longest via ferrata in the Czech Republic and the only one located right in the middle of a city. You climb from the Elbe embankment to the top of a 150–170m sandstone cliff, with the river canyon and castle below you the entire way. It's the perfect introduction to via ferrata — or a great morning workout if you've done it before and want to push harder lines.** **What makes this place special is that you can do it multiple times in one day, on different routes. Beginners start on the easier B lines and get a feel for the gear. More experienced climbers go straight for the D routes and find they're harder than labelled. Everyone ends up at the same viewpoint on top, looking down at the same improbable view.** **Who's this for?** **Everyone. Literally. Kids from age 12, first-timers, experienced climbers — the wall has something for all of you. The only deal-breaker is a serious fear of heights. If you're on the fence about whether you can handle it: you can. Come and find out.** ******* **🗓️ The Day** **🚉** **07:00 — Meet at Praha hl.n. (main entrance)** **We board the direct train to Děčín together. \~90 minutes, cheap ticket bookable on the** **ČD app** **(cd.cz). We split into groups by experience and climb at our own pace.** **Checkpoints at the top of each route** **— we regroup, rest, and decide whether to go again or call it a day.** **⚠️** **Important grade note:** **The routes here are graded by the builder — and they run consistently harder than labelled. B feels like C, C feels like D. Come prepared for more than the grade suggests.** **🍺** **\~13:00 — Lunch on the Elbe embankment** **Cafés and restaurants right by the river. Sit in the sun, order something cold, and look up at what you just climbed.** **🧗** **\~14:00 — Second round (optional)** **Those who want more lines go back up. Those who are done explore the embankment or Děčín Castle nearby.** **🚉** **\~16:00 — Firm meeting point at Děčín hl.n.** **We catch the train back together. Back in Prague by \~17:30.** ******* **⛈️ Weather note** **Climbing is strictly prohibited when it rains or the wall is wet — this is a safety rule, not a suggestion. We'll monitor the forecast in the WhatsApp group and confirm the day before. If conditions are bad, we reschedule.** ******* **🧗 Gear rental on-site** **Everything you need is available at** **Active Point Děčín****, \~150m from the wall:** **| Item | Cost |** **| ---- | ---- |** **| Full via ferrata set (harness, Y-lanyard, helmet) | \~250 CZK/day |** **| Gloves | Included or small extra |** **No need to bring your own kit. Cheapest and easiest — no parking, no driving, just get on the train.** **🚗 Option B — Carpool** **\~1.5h drive from Prague. Parking directly by the wall along the Elbe embankment (can get busy on summer weekends — arrive early). Coordinate in WhatsApp after RSVP.** ******* **RSVP here** **and you'll be added to our WhatsApp group — that's where we share the exact train time, confirm the weather, and sort any last-minute details. Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Stop Guessing: How to Measure and Improve LLM Outputs
Most people use LLMs by feel: ask a question, read the answer, decide whether it “seems good,” and move on. That works for casual use. It does not work when you are building software, automating workflows, writing important documents, or relying on AI for anything that needs to be repeatable. In this talk, we’ll look at how to improve and evaluate the inputs and outputs of LLMs using practical measurement techniques. We’ll cover how prompt changes affect results, how to compare outputs, how to build simple evaluation sets, and how math-based methods like similarity scoring can help you move beyond guesswork. This will be beginner-friendly, so even if you don't know anything about AI, you should get something out of it. However, this will be a little more technical than our intro talks. You do not need to be an AI researcher, but programmers and technically curious attendees will get a lot out of it. We’ll cover: * Why “it looks good” is not enough * How to improve prompts by changing the input, context, and constraints * How to compare LLM outputs more systematically * Basic evaluation techniques for accuracy, consistency, and usefulness * How embeddings, cosine similarity, and scoring can help evaluate results * Where automated evaluation works — and where humans still need to stay in the loop By the end, you’ll have a practical mental model for treating LLMs less like magic and more like systems you can test, measure, and improve. LOGISTICS AND PARKING: The talk starts at 7:00 PM. The first half hour is reserved for everyone to get set up and mingle. Free pizza and drinks! The cheapest parking option is to find street parking, which will only cost you a few bucks. Otherwise, park in the nearby veteran's museum lot for $8. It's highly recommended you avoid the nearby $15 garage parking.
