#35 AI Series: ETH Zürich - T. Wimmer
We are excited to feature **Thomas Wimmer**, who is currently PhD student at **ETH Zürich** and will discuss "**Beyond Patches: Learning Dense Visual Features**", lasting approximately 45 minutes. After the talk, seize the opportunity to connect with fellow AI enthusiasts to share ideas and questions while enjoying free drinks and pizza. **Door close by 7.15pm, so please come early! Also, "attend"ing (RSVP) here on Meetup is strictly necessary to be guaranteed entry.**
Please note that Meetup has recently been quite keen on promoting its Plus program. However, you are not obligated to purchase it, as both our events and the platform remain free.
**Who is this event for?**
This event is open to everyone interested in state-of-the-art AI research. We especially design it for students, PhD candidates, academic researchers, and industry professionals with a research focus in machine learning.
**Abstract**: Modern vision foundation models are highly capable and used as feature extractors in virtually any modern computer vision project. However, their patchified outputs inherently limit performance on dense, pixel-wise tasks. This talk presents strategies to learn and optimize dense visual features beyond these standard patches. We first introduce DIY-SC, a framework that leverages pseudo-labels to significantly improve pretrained models for correspondence tasks, while maintaining the original backbone's generalizability. We then focus on AnyUp, a universal feature upsampler that achieves state-of-the-art upsampling performance across diverse resolutions, domains, and downstream tasks. AnyUp is the first upsampler that is agnostic to the source features at inference time, significantly increasing its utility in practical settings. Finally, the talk briefly discusses recent applications of AnyUp.
**Bio**: Thomas Wimmer is a doctoral researcher and PhD fellow of the Max Planck ETH Center for Learning Systems, advised by Jan Eric Lenssen, Bernt Schiele (Max Planck Institute for Informatics), and Siyu Tang (ETH Zurich). He is currently a student researcher in the Semantic Perception team at Google Zurich. His research focuses on visual representation learning and 3D computer vision, and his work has been published at major AI conferences including CVPR, ICCV, 3DV, and ICLR. He has served as a reviewer for multiple A\* conferences and journals, was awarded an outstanding reviewer token at ICCV '25, and has conducted several research stays during his studies, working with Daniel Cremers (TUM), Maks Ovsjanikov (Ecole Polytechnique), and Federico Tombari (Google/TUM).
We are [BLISS](https://bliss.berlin/) e.V., the **AI** **organization** in Berlin that **connects like-minded individuals** who share great interest and passion for the field of machine learning. This summer 2026, we will, again, host an exciting speaker series on site in Berlin, featuring excellent researchers from cohere, ETH Zürich, University of Oxford, HuggingFace, and Stanford University.

Park Workout and Martial Arts
We'll start off the session with a run in Gleisdreieck park that might include scaling some walls, visiting a few sites in the area to explore their opportunities for climbing and balancing, or going up or down stairs in unusual ways. After the outdoors bit, we come back to our gym where we focus on building strength, working as a group, and learning basic martial arts techniques. We are a small, accessible, mixed-gender, queer-friendly group open to anyone, without any prior knowledge or specific degree of fitness required. Our martial art is Jutaijutsu, a traditional Japanese one focused on self-defence.
Sounds interesting? We'd love for you to drop by and join us. You'll need running shoes and comfortable workout clothes, including a raincoat or the like for the park if the weather is bad. Once indoors, we train barefoot. The first three Meetups are free of charge. If you'd like to join our group beyond that, we would ask you to join our association, https://yanagi.berlin, a martial arts school based in Berlin. Membership there is 30 EUR/month and you will be able to train three times a week.

**Agenda of the evening:**
**Welcome and Introductions:** The Toastmaster of the Day (TMOD) often opens the meeting, who welcomes everyone and introduces the meeting's theme or agenda. The TMOD also introduces the key roles and functionaries for that session.
**Prepared Speeches:** A significant portion of the meeting is dedicated to prepared speeches. Members working through various projects in the Toastmasters education program deliver speeches based on their chosen projects. Each speech is evaluated by a designated evaluator who provides feedback on strengths and areas for improvement.
**Table Topics:** Table Topics is a segment where impromptu speaking skills are tested. The Table Topics Master presents a series of short, unprepared speaking challenges or questions, and members or guests are invited to come to the podium and give a brief, improvised response.
**Evaluations:** Following the prepared speeches and Table Topics
segment, evaluators provide constructive feedback to speakers. These evaluations focus on content, delivery, body language, and time management. The goal is to help speakers improve their speaking skills.
**Reports and Functionary Roles:** The meeting may include various functionary roles, such as the Timer, Grammarian, Ah-Counter, and others, who report on their observations and contributions to the session. These roles help members improve their language and time management skills.
**General Evaluator:** The General Evaluator provides an overall assessment of the meeting, highlighting what went well and offering suggestions for improvement. They may also evaluate the evaluators' performance.
**Awards and Recognitions:** Toastmasters sessions often conclude with awards and recognitions, including the Best Speaker, Best Evaluator, and Best Table Topics Speaker. These awards encourage members to strive for excellence in their speaking and leadership abilities.
**Closing:** The meeting concludes with closing remarks from the Toastmaster of the Day, who may express gratitude to participants and encourage them to continue their Toastmasters journey.
**Networking and Socialising:** After the formal meeting, members and guests often have the opportunity to network, socialise, and discuss their experiences in a more relaxed setting.

**Line-Up:**
👉 **TestBalloon: Kotlin testing is easier (and more fun) than you think**
*by Oliver Okrongli*
You want an easier way to write tests? Parameterize tests in plain Kotlin? Reuse a series of tests? Easily extend own your test setup? Have first-class support on all platforms? All without struggling with a huge framework API? TestBalloon is a new test framework that brings the power of Kotlin to your test setup. With a small-surface API, a hierarchical test structure and an extensible DSL, TestBalloon makes Kotlin testing easy, even at scale. Oliver, the author of TestBalloon, will show testing patterns and strategies and lots of practical examples, ranging from simple unit tests with less boilerplate to advanced testing with coroutines and generated data. This talk is based on insights first presented at KotlinConf 2026 in Munich. At the end of this talk, you’ll be able to firmly the answer the question: "How can I master Kotlin testing with ease, and make my team release with joy and confidence, every time?"
👉 **One Topic to Rule 'Em All**
*by Yonatan Karp-Rudin*
Kafka delivered every event exactly once, in order, and lost nothing. So what broke? This talk follows that question into the gap most event-driven systems leave open: what actually guarantees the order your domain depends on, and what quietly doesn't. We start from a real log line, find the crack in an architecture that looks clean and ships fast, and rule out the fix everyone reaches for first. The cure turns out to be one sentence of domain thinking plus one line of config, though the Schema Registry will fight you on the way there. A live demo runs the bug and the fix back to back: same load, same hero, one change. If you build with Kafka, you have probably shipped a version of this bug. You will leave able to spot it and fix it before it pages someone.
👉 **TBD**
**Speaker Bios:**
🗣 Oliver Okrongli
Oliver has been shaping and creating software from backend to frontends. He is the author of TestBalloon, a next-generation Kotlin test framework. Before, he has helped to maintain Kotest, and contributed to several libraries of the Kotlin ecosystem as well as the Kotlin compiler. Can be found on GitHub (OliverO2) and the kotlinlang Slack (Oliver O).
When not developing, he is most probably in deep talks, dancing, snowboarding or F18 catamaran sailing whenever he gets a chance.
🗣 Yonatan Karp-Rudin
Yonatan Karp-Rudin is a Staff Engineer at Billie, building event-driven systems in Kotlin and Spring Boot. Off the clock, he plays with AI agents and builds random tooling, trying to hand off as much of his own workflow to a machine as he can. The rest of the time he's brewing mead or deep in a video game.

In-Person Event: The Answers to Depression & Anxiety
This is an in-person meeting. At this meeting you will get answers to depression and anxiety. Find out the source of them and how to get rid of them.
Did you know that unwanted emotions like anxiety, depression, unhappiness, loneliness, hopelessness, anger, fear, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not due to a chemical imbalance in your brain from some nebulous chemical reaction "by chance".
Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you.
The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life.
Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life.
Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there.
