Umbraco Kent Meetup - Monday 16th March 2026 @ 7pm
Please join us for an evening of all things Umbraco - the latest news, community chat, and a talk or two!
For 2026, we will be running both in-person and virtual meetups, alternating every month. For those who can't join in person, virtual attendance is available too, so you can join us no matter where you are!
This month, we have **Mike Masey** giving you a sneak peak of his Umbraco Spark talk where he uses Claude Code and SPECKL to create a web accessible tool for a brand contrast colour checker, and **Justin Neville** will be giving a demo of the new Umbraco AI integrations.
There will also be food, drinks and some friendly socialising. What's not to like? 😄
Whether you are an Umbraco novice or a seasoned developer, this is your chance to meet like-minded people to talk about our favourite friendly CMS! No matter what your role is there will be something to learn and your chance to meet other members of the Umbraco community from Kent and the surrounding areas.
Venue
The meetup will be at Dragon Coworking in Rochester (7-8 New Road Avenue, St George's Hotel, Rochester, ME4 6BB), a short walk from Chatham train station and with free on-site parking.
If you wish to use the car park, please access via Gundulph Road, Rochester, ME4 4ED. You can then use the steps between buildings to access the entrance. If the car park is full there is on road parking available, but please check the parking restrictions.

Pantheism - The idea that God is Nature, and Nature is God.
We are delighted to welcome guest speaker **François Hallac**, who will give a short talk on **Spinoza’s pantheism**. The talk will provide a starting point for a broader, open discussion of pantheism during the meeting.
Spinoza invites us to rethink everything by identifying God with Nature: a single infinite Substance whose attributes—thought and extension—shape all that exists. Human beings are modes of this vast unity, our minds and bodies expressions of the same divine order. To live well is to actualise our essence through understanding our desires, for joy is the fruit of clarity.
Like Descartes, Spinoza seeks clear and distinct ideas, yet he rejects dualism and embraces determinism: nothing is contingent, only misunderstood. Freedom arises when reason aligns us with Nature itself. In this union, the philosopher discovers genuine happiness and a profound sense of belonging to the whole.
No prior expertise is required—curiosity and a willingness to think together are enough.
Early bird tickets at £3 will be available until Mon March 9
**Where:** Downstairs room, Square Pig, Holborn (private room)
**NB:** The event begins at 7pm, doors open at 6:50pm. Event ends at 9pm
**Format:** 10-minute intro talk → vote on questions → small-group discussion → share insights with the whole room
SOLD OUT • ST PANCRAS • S2E3: LOVE III | Thought Experiments in Pubs
This episode will explore various ideas associated with 'LOVE'. There are so many ideas to explore, in fact, that this is our third time tackling the topic. We will explore it by way of three \*new\* thought experiments, which I will post in the comments on the day.
Join us for thought provoking conversations at the beautiful Betjeman Arms!
Spaces are limited, so get your ticket early if you want to be there 😊
**THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS** \- announced on the day of the event
**[WHATSAPP GROUP](https://chat.whatsapp.com/DapwAXpnOHO5DRYThobpe4)** \- stay in the loop
**[INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/thoughtexperimentsinpubs/)** \- see what we look like \(including The People of TEiP project\)
**[SUBSTACK](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/)** \- sign up for the newsletter
**The idea:** A chance to meet and talk meaningfully about thought provoking topics.
**How we'll do it** (timings approximate):
* 7:00pm - Arrive at The Betjeman Arms. You can access the pub either from the street (entrance to the right of The St Pancras Hotel entrance) or via St Pancras Station (entrance from the upstairs train platforms). We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us.
* Organise ourselves into small groups (3-6ish - apparently 4 is the best number for a good conversation!)
* Have a look at the **thought experiments** (announced on the day of the event)
* 7:15 - First rotation begins - Talk about the first thought experiment, but feel free to veer off topic.
* 7:35 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the second thought experiment.
* 8:00 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the third thought experiment.
* 8:25pm - Wrap up - hear about upcoming events, feedback/requests for future meetups.
* 8:30 Meetup ‘ends’. But feel free to carry on conversations. We have the room until 10pm and usually a lot of us stay until then :-)
**Notes on the general atmosphere**:
* The vibe is to let conversation flow rather than stick strictly to one topic.
* While we'd like to talk about 'meaningful things', we also see the value in lighter topics, so don't worry about not being 'deep' enough!
* Feel free to suggest ideas for future Thought Experiments in Pubs meetup groups, both in terms of structure and topics to discuss.
**Where we'll meet**:
This group will be at The Betjeman Arms. The nearest Tube station is King's Cross St. Pancras. You can access the pub either from the street (entrance to the right of The St Pancras Hotel entrance) or via St Pancras Station (entrance from the upstairs train platforms). We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us.
**Who should come**:
Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality... etc....
I'm so looking forward to meeting & talking with you in this beautiful location :-)

Thank you!
Monday Mafia Game & Social – Beginner Friendly – Hydrant (Monument)
**Welcome to UK Mafia!**
On Monday the 16th we meet at **The Hydrant (Monument)** on the **Second Floor** (see large function room). It is near **London Bridge**.
**Do I need to know anything beforehand?**
This is a **beginner-friendly** event, and many will be playing with us for the first time. If you are new, **arrive early** to hear explanations of the rules, and you will get to play many games. We will also explain strategies. Most importantly, this is a social activity, so feel free to talk to anyone between the games and have fun!
\* *If you are an intermediate player, there is a separate intermediate table on the other side of the floor \**
**️♂️ What is Mafia?** Have you seen 'The Traitors'? Play the game that 'Traitors' is based upon! Mafia is a 10-player social game; it can get competitive, but it's easy to learn. We play at multiple tables. You get a secret role and work with your team to win. A game lasts about 45 minutes, so we play many during the day. The **Mafia team** tries to hide and eliminate the **Citizens**, while the **Citizens** try to find the Mafia through deduction and logic.
While this is a **beginner-friendly** event, we also host tournaments and online events with players from around the world. Ask us about our online games! We even organise trips abroad to meet and play with other Mafia clubs, so ask us about it when we meet✈️
***
**[How to Play?](https://bit.ly/HowToPlayMafia)**
We will teach you how to play when you arrive. You will quickly see that the game has two phases:
**Night:**
* The Mafia secretly targets a Citizen
* The *Don* (Mafia) learns if a player is the *Sheriff*
* The *Sheriff* (Citizen) learns if someone is Mafia
☀️ **Day:**
* Each player says in their turn who they think the Mafia are
* Then, everyone votes publicly to eliminate one player
The game continues until the Mafia are eliminated or they outnumber (or equal) the Citizens. We will explain all the rules at the venue, and you’ll pick it up.
Want to learn more about the game? See our wide range of resources, including brochures and videos: **[https://bit.ly/EMF-TIPS](https://bit.ly/EMF-TIPS)**

Claude Code for Technical Writers: Beyond the Chat Interface
🤖 **Most AI writing tools keep you in a chat box. This talk is about what happens when you step outside it.**
Led by **[Max Clayton Clowes](https://www.linkedin.com/in/maxclaytonclowes/)**, afractional product manager, we'll look at how technical writers — regardless of coding background — can use Claude Code to work in a docs-as-code environment, extend their documentation tooling, and build workflows that hold their own standards over time.
We'll cover:
\- Why Claude without proper context is a frustrating experience and how Skills fix that
\- How Claude Code enables technical writers to work with frameworks like Docusaurus without needing to be developers
\- Building and extending documentation tooling — plugins\, components\, GitHub Actions — that most teams don't have the time or skills to build from scratch
\- Using Claude Code to maintain docs at scale: auditing\, keeping content in sync with a changing codebase\, and automating the checks that keep quality consistent
The talk is aimed at technical writers of all levels. You don't need to be comfortable in a terminal to get value from it — we'll show a clear path from the Claude web interface through to Claude Code, and you can engage at whichever level suits you.
**Want to follow along?**
Pick the level that works for you and get set up before you arrive:
\- Web interface: A Claude account at claude\.ai\. Free tier is fine\.
\- Claude Code: Download the Claude desktop app at claude\.com/download\. Requires a paid Claude plan \(Pro or above\)\. On macOS/Linux\, run *curl \-fsSL https://claude\.ai/install\.sh \| bash* to install. Windows users can download the installer directly. No other dependencies needed.
Not set up? Everything will be on screen — you can explore at your own pace afterwards.

Discuss & Social 🍷 Why are women blamed for men's wrongs?
*"She dressed too sexy", "She was out late at night", "Why didn't she leave sooner?"...* these are some of the ways in which women victims across all cultures are blamed for getting in harm's way or even for provoking the men who harmed them.
Men, in contrast, are often shown more sympathy (or "Him-pathy") and understanding for the mistakes they commit, especially men of good character and status. Prof. Kate Manne explains that *“the emotions and perspectives of men are centred and those of women are set to one side."*
We'll discuss...
1\. Should men who harm women ever deserve any sympathy?
2\. Should cultural differences be an excuse?
3\. What could be solutions to move the focus towards the perpetrator?

This might be the first time we've had two events in one month!
We have a special *second* March event with a panel of experts from Citadel Securities who will discuss what it's *really* like using C++ in financial systems. The event is timed to be just before the WG21 (C++ standards committee) meeting the following week, so we have some big visiting names.
**Citadel Securities** will be hosting this one and providing a larger venue (the same place they hosted us last summer) with drinks and snacks. Thanks Citadel!
**For this venue we need to collect full names and email addresses** so they can send you a QR code to get in. You will also be sent terms & conditions via Docusign.
The data will only be used for this purpose and not published anywhere or used for other purposes.
Please note that the QR code will be sent from **[notify@22bishopsgate.com](mailto:notify@22bishopsgate.com)** (a send-only address).

From Web Forms to Web Components - Burton Smith
**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you.
The building address is 4450 Bridge Park
The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400
**Abstract**
Web Forms gave .NET developers a powerful abstraction for building reusable UI controls long before design systems were a thing. Web Components finally bring that same idea to the browser natively.
This session explores how the Web Forms mindset translates into Custom Elements, Shadow DOM, and HTML templates. We’ll examine how Web Components enable design systems that work across frameworks, how they differ from server‑driven controls, and why they’re becoming a foundational layer for modern UI. Whether you’re maintaining legacy apps or building greenfield projects, you’ll leave with a practical understanding of how to apply familiar patterns in a modern, standards‑based way.
