Free film screening about Poplar Island at National Wildlife Visitor Center
Come check out a free screening and talk about the film "**Resurrecting Poplar Island"** at the Patuxent Research Refuge. For those of you who haven't been involved in its construction, Poplar Island (like its northern cousin Hart-Miller) was nearly washed away by erosion over the past century. For over two decades now, it has been rebuilt into a large wildlife refuge using dredge material from shipping channel maintenance. Perhaps this film will get enough people jazzed up to take the long trip out to it next summer.
More info at the link below.
[https://www.fws.gov/event/free-film-speakers-program-resurrecting-poplar-island](https://www.fws.gov/event/free-film-speakers-program-resurrecting-poplar-island)
Film: **Resurrecting Poplar Island**, exploring the rebirth of a once-thriving island community in the Chesapeake Bay, lost to erosion in the late 20th century. The island is now home to a thriving ecosystem, thanks to “an extraordinary partnership between state and federal agencies.” Q&A with guest speakers from Poplar Island. Friends of Patuxent will provide light refreshments.
Schedule:
Visitor Center special hours opening at 4:00
Film Starts at 5:30
Intermission with free snacks at 6:00
Speaker portion begins at 6:20

Profs & Pints DC: Robert Frost's Winter Poems
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Robert Frost’s Winter Poems,”** an exploration of a beloved poet’s thoughts on the season, with Michael Manson, former lecturer on literature at American University and past president of the Robert Frost Society.
[Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/hill-center-frost-poems](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/hill-center-frost-poems) .]
“Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.”
So begins “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” which ranks as one of the most popular American poems of the 20th century and helped cement Robert Frost's status as of one of our nation’s most beloved poets.
Come to the Hill Center on Capitol Hill as we approach the darkest evening of the year for a talk that will have you delighting in Frost and embracing the arrival of winter.
Winter challenges modern urban Americans less immediately than it did Frost, who owned several New England farms. Yet the questions Frost raised through the metaphor of winter remain vital. Are humans meant to live and thrive on this planet, or is existence some cruel joke? How do we explain human resilience, the ability to keep pushing through despite the odds? Is there some force above us, in life itself, or some stubbornness at the heart of being human? What does it mean to thrive?
Frost raised questions like these in his poetry without answering them. For him, the answers are to be found in the process of making. Whether we’re writing poems, keeping gardens, playing sports, building careers, or raising families, we are all turning chaos into order. In all pursuits, Frost said, “strongly spent is synonymous with kept,” and he is inspired by those times when humans spend their lives strongly and thus keep them.
Be on hand as Michael Manson, a veteran scholar of Frost, reads and discusses Frost's poems on winter and other subjects. He’ll cover some of Frost’s best-known poems—“Stopping by Woods,” “Desert Places,” “The Wood-Pile”—as well as lesser-known works such as “Afterflakes,” “Questioning Faces,” and “Good-bye and Keep Cold.” The experience will be magical, and you’ll end up with a different perspective on the season ahead. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.)

In-Person: The Library of Congress & Annual Holiday Book Exchange!
**THIS IS AN IN-PERSON EVENT IN WASHINGTON, DC.**
Come join us to celebrate the holidays at the Library of Congress. This is our third year to take in the treasures of the Library of Congress and then to share lunch and a book exchange at the Madison Cafe in the Madison Building. Even if you have participated before, please come. There are some new exhibits to see and the book exchange has always been a lively and enjoyable event! Maybe you can bring the book you took home last year!
This year the event will be run a bit differently. I can do only one visit (unlike the previous years when I offered two). I'm trying a new system to allow as many people who want to attend to attend. **Please read through the entire description of the event.**
I won't be doing a formal tour but will guide you through the Library. If you are joining with your own entry pass, I will post updates in Meetup as we move through the Library so you can find and join us.
**WHAT WE WILL SEE:** This walk through will introduce you to the basic elements of the Jefferson Building and the Madison Building. After entering the Jefferson Building and checking our items into the cloak room, we will move to the Main Floor. If you are interested in doing the walk though for the Reading Room, you will acquire your own pass.
If you wish to do the walk through, please see the information below about the special requirements for doing so. There are very strict requirements as to what you can bring into the Reading Room. You should plan accordingly.
We will view the Gutenberg Bible and the Great Hall, and, if open, the Librarian’s Ceremonial Office.
We will move up to the Second Floor to see the Main Reading Room Overlook, the Minerva Mosaic (and her crazy feet), the holiday Exhibit, the view of the U.S. Capitol, Thomas Jefferson’s Library. We will take in two exhibits: [Collecting Memories: Treasures from the Library of Congress](https://www.loc.gov/exhibitions/treasures-from-the-library-of-congress/about-this-exhibition/) and [The Two Georges: Parallel Lives in an Age of Revolution](https://www.loc.gov/exhibitions/two-georges/about-this-exhibition/). Please note that the Collecting Memories exhibit closes at the end of 2025; it will be your last chance to see the artifacts from President's Lincoln's pockets on the night he was assassinated.
We will regroup around 11:45. We will pick up our items from the cloakroom and then use the tunnels to walk to the Madison Building for lunch and the book exchange at the 6th floor Madison Cafe. After lunch, there is a final surprise stop in the Madison Building if you’re willing to see one more thing!
**HOW TO GET YOUR ENTRY PASS:** I have 19 passes for the 10am entry. You are allowed to bring one guest. (If you want more than one guest pass, they will have to get it through the reservation link below.)
Reservations will open up for those passes on December 1st.
**However, if you want to guarantee that you receive a pass, you can order your own NOW directly on the Library of Congress's website. You should try to get the 10am slot, but if that is full, getting a 10:15 or 10:30 would work. You can meet us inside. [https://www.etix.com/ticket/e/1038417/timedentry-ticket-reservations-washington-thomas-jefferson-building](https://www.etix.com/ticket/e/1038417/timedentry-ticket-reservations-washington-thomas-jefferson-building)**
**THE BOOK EXCHANGE: The book exchange occurs during lunch.** To participate in the book exchange that will occur during our lunch at the Madison Cafe (your expense) please bring a new or used, hardback or softcover book that is appropriate to share.
After lunch, we will make the exchange (following a convoluted and I hope entertaining process that I will walk you through). You are welcome to attend the lunch even if you do not participate in the book exchange.
**WAIT LIST:** If a wait list develops, people from the wait list will be moved automatically to the attending list if spots become available on the attending list. If you are put on the wait list, keep your eye on communications from Meetup as you will receive a notification that you're attending.
**REMEMBER YOU CAN GET YOUR OWN ENTRY PASS.** If you acquire your own entry pass, you do not have to RSVP here. If you have a Reader Card, you can use that to enter and then meet us inside. Just let us know in the comments if you plan to attend with your own pass (for planning purposes).
If your plans change and you have requested one of my 19 tickets, please keep your RSVP current.
**FURTHER INFORMATION:**
**GETTING THERE:** [https://www.loc.gov/visit/directions/](https://www.loc.gov/visit/directions/). If you plan to take Metro, be sure to check for any service disruptions the day of: [https://www.wmata.com/service/index.cfm](https://www.wmata.com/service/index.cfm).
**MEETING POINT:** We will meet between 9:30 and 10:00am outside the the Visitor Entrance of the Thomas Jefferson Building on First Street SE between Independence Ave and East Capitol Street. Our entry time is 10:00am, so please plan accordingly to arrive no later than 9:45am. We have to enter the building together at 10am.
If you do not meet us outside, keep looking at the comments on Meetup. I will post where we are so you can find us.
**SECURITY:** All visitors must navigate “airport-like” security to enter the Thomas Jefferson Building; personal belongings and bags will be subject to a thorough search. Bags will also be searched upon your exit.
**PERSONAL BELONGINGS:** There is a cloakroom available on the Ground Floor of the Thomas Jefferson Building.
**SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE READING ROOM:** The Reading Room has restrictions on what you can bring into the Room, including coats, oversized bags, and umbrellas. You can check non-permitted items at the cloakroom if you want to enter the Reading Room. For the restrictions, see [Personal Belongings Restrictions at the Library of Congress](https://www.loc.gov/rr/personalbelongings.html), including items not allowed in Research Areas.
**ACCESSIBILITY:** Library of Congress buildings are fully accessible.
**HEALTH CONCERNS:** This event is mask-friendly.
**CANCELLATION:** If the event has to be cancelled due to weather or circumstances beyond my control, I will try to give as much advance notice as possible.
**QUESTIONS:** If you have any questions, please reach out to me via direct message in Meetup or email at savemytourspot@gmail.com. I will respond as soon as I can.
I look forward to seeing you there to help celebrate the Library of Congress and our holiday book exchange!

Zorba's Cafe near the Dupont Circle
Zorba's Cafe on Thursdays! We will be on the 2nd floor, or if the weather allows, we will be sitting outside at a table in the street. If you don't see anyone on the 2nd floor and the weather is favorable, it means we're sitting at the table in the street.
Welcome to the old venue! Old - since we used to get together at Zorba's Cafe for many years. Come to the 2nd floor.
1612 20th St NW, Washington, DC 20009
This is very close to Metro Dupont Circle station.
This is the same place where we got together every Thursday evening for many years before 2015.
Everyone is welcome, but please keep conversation in Russian only. For many of us, this is our only chance to practice our Russian. There are happy hour prices available.
Timing: Someone is usually there by 5:30, but it sometimes takes the organizers till 5:45 or so. If you get there first, please wait - we will be there! And people are usually there till at least 8. So if you can't make it right at the beginning, that is perfectly fine to arrive late!
RSVP's: I encourage you to RSVP. But please know that many people don't RSVP. So it may seem like only 3 people are planning to attend, but have no fear, we usually have a good-sized fun group! (And we almost always have newcomers. So if you are planning on coming for the first time, you most likely won't be the only one.)
Also, when the weather is nice we are frequently sitting outdoors. So if nobody is on the second floor, just look for the group speaking Russian at tables out on the street.
And to say again - we have often had only 3 or 4 people RSVP but have 15 or so show up. So don't worry about that.
See you there!

Energizing Walk for Busy People!
Join our weekly walking meetup to have fun, maintain a healthy lifestyle, meet new people, and enjoy the weather! We meet Saturdays at 10am, halfway between the Reston *Container Store* and *Not Your Average Joes* (by the metal benches), leaving no later than 10:05.
Every week, rain or shine, we start by walking along the Green Trail to reach Lake Anne Community Center. Once there, we pause for water/bio (often staying a few minutes extra from April-November, due to the local Farmer's Market), and then we circle Lake Anne and head back to our starting point. It's roughly 3-4 miles and takes about an hour and a half.
Afterwards, some members will often head to *Not Your Average Joes* or another local restaurant for a quick drink/meal before tackling the day.
This event is open to all ages and fitness levels. Dogs are welcome, and we recommend dressing for the weather (umbrella, water, snow shoes, hat, etc.) since we'll walk rain or shine. Also, feel free to bring a friend!
By signing up, you accept and assume all risks and responsibilities with this activity, and nobody will be held liable.

DC Pre X-Mas Dining – Modern Southern at Succotash Prime (Chinatown)
Let's sneak in one more event prior to Christmas! I’m inviting the group to an evening at **Succotash Prime (Penn Quarter)**, the DC home base of celebrity chef Edward Lee, for his take on Southern cooking with an Asian twist, cocktails, and bourbon.
**→** **This Event's final 'Change Your Mind' RSVP Cutoff is 10a Friday, 12/19**. Our **[No-Show / Late Cancel policies](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BU0ZjQNdMwTjIkZVGlOlw8rTIia5xWhE/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=107783167750249492259&rtpof=true&sd=true) apply**.
**FOOD:** Succotash Prime is the DC outpost of Chef Edward Lee, a James Beard Award winner and former Top Chef contestant who made his name in Louisville, Kentucky. The menu blends Southern comfort with Korean influenced touches. Recent diners and the restaurant’s own highlights focus on shrimp ‘n’ grits, chicken and waffles, fried green tomatoes, and Jamie’s cornbread with hot honey, along with a serious bourbon list and strong happy hour program. Save room for dessert! There's a very rich Chocolate Bourbon Pecan pie and classic Hummingbird Cake with coconut and candied pecans.
The bar program stands out with bourbon forward cocktails and seasonal Southern riffs. Many attendees end up starting with craft cocktails and then moving into wine or bourbon flights during dinner. The Bourbon and Rye list is impressive.
→ Check out the full dinner menu: [https://www.succotashrestaurant.com/menu](https://www.succotashrestaurant.com/menu)
→ Visit the restaurant site: [https://www.succotashrestaurant.com/](https://www.succotashrestaurant.com/)
**SPACE**: Succotash Prime sits inside a former early-1900s bank building, and they kept the scale and structure intact instead of boxing it in. The main dining room opens into a tall atrium with a mezzanine level wrapping the room, so you get open sightlines across multiple levels no matter where you sit. The marble details, vaulted ceiling, and original architectural elements give the room real presence without feeling stiff. There are large central and balcony-level bars, plus smaller carved-out rooms built from former bank areas, including a converted vault. The layout works well for conversation, drinks before dinner, and lingering after the meal.

And how about being able to shake off resentments, persistent annoyance, or even feelings of vengeance?
We’d like to invite you to an event on how to overcome anger and resentment. We will show you why people have trouble controlling their temper and where resentment comes from.
Flaring anger can ruin a meeting, a relationship, an opportunity, or just about any aspect of life. Worst of all, outbursts towards our family can create hurt that lingers throughout a lifetime.
You want to have a civil conversation, and you’ve vowed that you wouldn’t lose your temper, but a few minutes later, the anger flares up. Maybe you’ve realized that being angry doesn’t get you what you want so you internalize it. Or maybe you avoid the knockdown, drag-out fights, but stewing in resentment is exhausting and takes an emotional toll.
In this event we show you how to get to the root of your anger so that it stops being an issue to you. You’ll also learn why people harbor resentments and how to move on.
Don't continue to struggle, make a difference in your life, and join us for this local event.
