The *On a whim* live storytelling show is on Wednesday, 24th June. If you’ve got a story or just an idea in mind, come to one of our pitch workshops at the end of May. Hi there everybody! We invite you all to come enjoy Peng Chau island to our next movie night on 26th of April. This time we will watch our first Hungarian movie. But it will also be the first animated movie we watch. The movie is called 'Son of the White Mare' (1981) from director Marcell Jankovics: In this dreamlike Hungarian folk myth, a horse goddess gives birth to three powerful brothers who set out into the Underworld to save three princesses from three evil dragons and reclaim their ancestors' lost kingdom. The movie will have English subtitles. If you want to watch a Hungarian movie for the first time come and enjoy! We will start the movie at 7pm till 9pm in a terrace in Peng Chau. There is a ferry at 5:50pm from Central Pier N6 and arrives in Peng Chau at 6:30pm. I can meet people at the pier at 6:30pm. Local fishermen invited the image of the deity Pak Tai to the island; parading it through the streets was believed to drive away evil spirits. Villagers dressed as other deities (the origin of today’s Piu Sik parade) to inspect every corner of the island and restore peace. Over time, the ritual expanded with bun towers symbolising gratitude and protection. The modern form, including the famous bun-snatching competition, has been held annually (with a brief COVID hiatus) and now coincides with Buddha’s Birthday, blending Taoist roots with broader cultural appeal. It was recognised as part of China’s national intangible cultural heritage in 2011. **Cultural Significance** Rooted in Taoist traditions, this festival began over two centuries ago as a community ritual to ward off plague and evil spirits.
