!ENGLISH! THURSDAY / Opera Cafe - Philosophy Meetup: 19:30h - 21:00
Hi and welcome to our next Socrates Café philosophy meetup!
Do you have a hunger for deeper understanding of yourself and the world? Do you value deep, honest and respectful dialogue?
If yes, then this meetup will be very interesting for you.
• WHAT IS A MEETUP ABOUT?
At every meetup we have a discussion using Socratic method:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socratic_method
We ask, answer and discuss questions and ideas to stimulate critical thinking and to widen our perspectives with new concepts and thoughts.
The main purpose of these meetups is to enrich ourselves with the perspectives of others, not to convince others about our own perspectives.
Our meetups are about our own philosophies of life and not necessarily what the great philosophers and academics have said or written. It is not a debating club or a platform for proselytizing. Instead, we place the emphasis on questioning, open mindedness and challenging our own assumptions while listening to and respecting the views shared by others.
A Socrates Café meetup is considered a success when participants leave a discussion with many more questions than they had at the beginning.
• WHAT TOPIC IS DISCUSSED AT THE MEETUP?
Participants suggest topics at the beginning of each meeting. We then vote and choose that event's most popular topic for discussion. No academic training in philosophy necessary; just enthusiasm for exchanging ideas and points of view.
Some examples of subjects chosen on previous meetups:
* What ideals are worth dying for?
* Why are we never satisfied?
* Why is it that human beings know that the society is going wrong, leaders are well informed about it and things continue as is?
* Is identity necessary?
* How can it be that people in democratic societies are so obsessed with power? (Desire to be different, better, stronger than others)
* What is friendship?
• WHO PARTICIPATES AT THIS MEETUP?
Anybody is more than welcome to join our meetups. Our events gather people from different backgrounds, different cultures, while no philosophical background is mandatory.
Our usual participants are people that have a hunger for deeper understanding of themselves and the world. People that value deep, honest and respectful dialogue.
The inspiration for Socrates Cafe originates with the book of the same name, written by the philosopher Christopher Phillips. (Socrates Cafe: A Fresh Taste of Philosophy, 2002). Phillips felt that the Socratic method of dialogue and discussion should be practiced not just in academic settings, but among everyday people interested in examining deep questions together. It's a Guy thing!
Let’s be honest, sometimes us guys aren’t great at making new mates. There are tons of meetups and groups for women, but guys? Not so many. *So… maybe it’s a guy thing*. This group is about changing that.
We meet for relaxed chats, a laugh, and genuine conversation about the things that actually matter to us in life, such as well-being, growth, health, creativity, work, travel, relationships, or whatever someone throws on the table.
**The topic for our next meetup is "Influence"**
Who is someone that has influenced you in your life?"
This is not a circle, just a laid-back space for guys to connect and share thoughts and ideas. No pressure, no egos, just blokes of any age chatting and having a good time.
It's free, so you only need to bring some good vibes 🙂

Warning Signs and Philosophy: How to Shape the Future
We are constantly being warned, but we seldom heed warnings. Cautioned about authoritarian leaders, climate change, technological dystopias, or other catastrophes, we fail to take action or even take them seriously. Too often warnings are dismissed—much like the artists, scientists, environmentalists, and intellectuals who deliver them. Why don’t we listen?
**[Tickets from 10 Euros - must be purchased here.](https://luma.com/iz6eyzpf?utm-source-MEETUP)**
In this Growth Lab LIVE session, Santiago Zabala asks us to think of warnings as “signs from the future.” He argues that warnings—as distinct from predictions—invite us to see the possibility of a radical break from the present. Predictions tell us to submit to the inevitable, but warnings ask us to take part in shaping a different future.
**About the speaker:**
[Santiago Zabala ](https://www.santiagozabala.com/)is ICREA Research Professor of Philosophy at the Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. He is the author of a number of books, including *Why Only Art Can Save Us: Aesthetics and the Absence of Emergency* (2017) and *Being at Large. Freedom in the Age of Alternative Facts* (2020), and most recently, *Signs from the Future. A Philosophy of Warnings* (2025). Zabala has also written opinion articles for publications including the *New York Times*, *Al Jazeera*, and the *Los Angeles Review of Books*.

**ON ENS TROBEM?**
Centre cívic drassanes
Nou de la rambla, 43
https://maps.app.goo.gl/hMzFvMG8x864Tsyf6
**QUAN ENS TROBEM?**
Els divendres de 19:15 a 20:45. Si us plau, arribeu a temps. Començarem puntualment.
**QUANTES PERSONES ENS REUNIM?**

Humanist Program: Fighting the Efforts to Insert Religion into Public Education
The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called "Going to HCCO" and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.
Food and drinks will be provided at the event. Feel free to show up a little bit early to hang out and talk.
Our March speakers are Molly Gaines and Zack Parrish, co-organizers of the Secular Education Association:
They will share their story of how a small group of Ohio parents grew into a national organization tracking released-time religious instruction and other church–state issues in public schools. The presentation will cover SEA’s early wins and hard lessons, what we’re seeing nationally right now, and how local advocates can play a meaningful role in protecting public education. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of the landscape — and practical ways to get involved.
Going forward our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online

Using Philosophy to Cope with Current Events
So this month's prompt is more general. I think we can all agree that we are living in "unique" times that require coping skills. I think that one role and/or purpose of philosophy is to help us deal with our daily lives and our "unique" times. So, let's share our feelings and thoughts about which philosopher/philosophy we turn to in order to deal with our crazy events. Who/what helps you stay focused in your daily life and helps you sleep at night. I find that Stoicism with a little philosophical pessimism mixed in goes a long way in helping me deal with what I see as very destructive, fearful and mean spirited public policies at both the state and federal levels. Hope to see you on March 28th!
