The course develops competence across the four key language skills:
• Listening – understanding spoken French in different contexts
• Speaking – taking part in conversations and giving presentations
• Reading – understanding texts of varying length and complexity
• Writing – producing clear and accurate written French
Students also learn essential grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, and gain insight into French and Francophone culture. Assessment is based on examinations in the four skills at Foundation or Higher level.
March Meeting 1 - The First Bad Man (Miranda July)
In our weekday meeting for March, we will discuss *The First Bad Man* by Miranda July. The debut novel from the filmmaker, artist, and bestselling author is 'dazzling and unforgettable.' Published in 2015, it followed her award-winning collection of short stories, *No One Belongs Here More Than You* (2007), and Caméra d'Or winning feature-length debut, *Me and You and Everyone We Know* (2005).
''The first novel by the filmmaker and artist Miranda July is like one of those strange mythological creatures that are part one thing, part another - a griffin or a chimera, perhaps, or a sphinx . . . An immensely moving portrait of motherhood and what it means to take care of a child . . . July writes of Cheryl's discovery of maternal love with heartfelt emotion and power"
-Michiko Kakutani, *New York Times*
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/21412400-the-first-bad-man
Our meeting will occur at Brasserie Blanc - Threadneedle St. So join us for some tasty French fair in the heart of the City as we delve into this fascinating read!
N.B. We will be charging an event fee of £3, non-refundable, to discourage no-shows and contribute to the running costs of the group. Please only sign up if you intend to come along as space is limited to make for an effective discussion!

worshop in French: making pastry
Hi,
in this workshop, we will learn to prepare different types of pastry and we'll see various ways to use them. We might prepare , if we want to, a real tarte tatin, a fruit tart, sablés biscuits or lemon meringue tart and a traditional quiche Lorraine.
We will then go and taste them in the dining room or upstairs while admiring the view.
The event is free in itself, but I will charge for the ingredients. It should not exceed £15/ person.
Please note, the event will only run if there are at least 3 people coming, and I will send you a payment link to be paid before attending.
We will cook together (in French of course) in our beautiful 56th floor kitchen, and then we will share and chitchat together in French and you can take some home if there are any left! (bring some tupperware!)
You are welcome to bring a drink if you like, we have glasses and everything necessary.
For extra fun, you could bring an ingredient you'd like to use!!

***Okay, call me crazy but you have got to try their chip n dip!*** Club 185 is a true hidden gem in German Village! Seriously, old school, good comfort food and drink. We will try to gather in spaces near the windows. While we'll share Chip n Dip, you'll want to order a sandwich, too.

Potato chips can be traced back to an English chef, William Kitchiner, who includes ‘crisps’ in his bestselling cookbook, “The Cook’s Oracle.”
**Chip and Dip Popularity**
The popularity of chip and dip skyrockets at the end of World War II with new entertainment fads and the introduction of Lipton’s new advertising campaign for their famous French Onion Dip. (Club 185 doesn't openly admit it, but I'm pretty sure that's their dip recipe!)
**[Club 185](http://club185.com/)**—a true neighborhood bar serving since 1954, when it was known as a local 'speak-easy'. Located in German Village, Club 185 features a menu of quality casual comfort food and full bar. From politicians to lawyers, hardhats to hipsters—all find Club 185 the perfect place to tame their hunger and quench their thirst!

We have never tried this, and sometimes there are quite a few people at these events so we hope that we will be able to find each other easily. I'll try to have signs outside Marian Hall that Identify our group. We hope to have you join us!
